Why won't the adjustment knob turn on my Bowflex SelectTech 552i dumbbell?
    • S

If the adjustment knob on your Bowflex Home Gym dumbbell won't turn while the handle is in the base, first ensure the dumbbell handle is fully pressed down into the base. If it's not, the locking mechanism might not release, preventing knob rotation. Also, check that no weight plates have been placed backward in the base, with the 'Locking Tab' facing the dumbbell handle grip. All weight plates should have the selection tongue facing away from the grip. Finally, inspect the dumbbell base for any dirt, debris, or obstructions. You might need to remove the weight plates to check this, ensuring you replace each plate in its correct location with the selection tongue facing away from the dumbbell grip.

What to do if plates are not secured to the handle and drop out of my Bowflex SelectTech 552i Home Gym?

If plates are not secured to the handle and drop out of your Bowflex Home Gym, ensure all weight plates have the 'Locking Tab' facing away from the dumbbell grip. If any weights are inserted backward, with the 'Locking Tab' facing inward toward the grip, the handle can get blocked. Also, verify that the plates not selected (those plates remaining in the dumbbell base) are in their correct spots and have not been moved to different support slots, as this may block the dumbbell from fitting back into the base.

What to do if the dumbbell handle doesn't fully insert into the base of my Bowflex Home Gym when plates are selected?

      Lori HernandezAug 23, 2025
If the dumbbell handle of your Bowflex Home Gym doesn't fully insert into the base when plates are selected, first check if you've selected different weights on each side of the dumbbell. If so, replace the dumbbell in the base with the same orientation it was removed from, allowing the plates to settle into the correct openings. Also, verify that the plates not selected (those remaining in the base) are in their correct spots and haven't been moved, which could block the dumbbell.

To ensure the dumbbell handle of your Bowflex Home Gym fully inserts into the base when no plates are selected, make certain that both adjustment knobs are set directly to the number 2.
