Why is my Breville Kitchen Appliance milk not foaming?
    • E
      Elizabeth BarrettAug 4, 2025
If your Breville Kitchen Appliance milk is not foaming, it could be due to several reasons. Make sure to use cold, fresh milk, and avoid re-foaming milk that has already been heated. Try reducing the amount of milk in the jug. Ensure the light is illuminated and not flashing. Experiment with different types of milk and frothing discs to see if that improves the froth. Adding dense ingredients like thick syrups or heavy powders can also reduce the amount of foam, which is normal.

If the frothing disc in your Breville Kitchen Appliance is not moving or has become dislodged, stop the operation immediately. If the frothing disc has dislodged during operation, remove the liquid from the jug. Ensure the frothing disc is inserted firmly into the jug. If ingredients have been added too quickly, refill the jug with liquid. Add ingredients slowly and in small quantities.

      nconnerAug 22, 2025
If ingredients aren't melting in your Breville Kitchen Appliance, it might be because they were added before the milk warmed up. Allow the milk frother to stir for a few seconds before adding ingredients. Also, ensure that the ingredients are cut into small pieces.

Overview

The Breville Milk Café™ (BMF600) is an induction heating milk frother designed to create creamy, frothed milk for various beverages, as well as to stir and heat other liquid ingredients. This appliance is specifically engineered for foaming milk and dairy milk alternatives, and it is not intended for thickening or heating other food substances like cream, custards, soups, or gravies. It also isn't designed to mix large quantities of dry ingredients or melt large food pieces such as cubed chocolate, ground nuts, whole spices, or fresh herbs.

Function Description

The primary function of the Breville Milk Café™ is to froth and heat milk. It utilizes Induction Heating Technology to provide gentle and even heat distribution, ensuring consistent results. The device features a START|STOP Push-Dial, which allows users to initiate or cease operation and adjust the desired temperature. An LED indicator illuminates when the power is on, flashes during the frothing cycle, and ceases to illuminate in standby mode.

The appliance comes with two interchangeable frothing discs: the 'Cappuccino' Frothing Disc, designed for thick and creamy froth, and the 'Latte' Frothing Disc, which produces smooth and silky milk. These discs are inserted onto a shaft at the base of the milk jug, ensuring the wider part of the disc faces down and clicks securely into place.

A key feature is the ‘COLD STIR’ setting, which allows for frothing cold milk or stirring ingredients without additional heat. This setting is ideal for iced cappuccinos, blending syrups and flavorings for iced chocolate, or dissolving instant drinking powders into milk. The COLD STIR setting operates for 60 seconds before automatically stopping.

The Breville Milk Café™ is equipped with safety features such as Boil Dry Protection, which automatically stops operation if the jug overheats due to being empty, having liquid below the MIN marking, or after consecutive uses. In such cases, 3 alerts will sound, and the user must unplug the power cord and allow the frother to cool before reactivating. It also includes Thermal Fuse Protection, which permanently turns off the unit in case of a major fault, requiring immediate cessation of use and removal from the power outlet. After 30 seconds of non-use, the milk frother enters standby mode, and the button surround ceases to illuminate. It can be reactivated by pressing the START|STOP button.

Usage Features

To operate the Breville Milk Café™, users first select the appropriate frothing disc ('Capp' for thick froth or 'Latté' for smooth milk) and securely insert it into the jug. Cold, fresh milk should then be poured into the jug, ensuring it is filled between the MIN and MAX level markings. The jug is then placed onto the power base, which must be dry and clean.

The desired temperature is set by turning the START|STOP dial. For optimal frothing results for cappuccinos or lattes, it is recommended to stay within the ‘OPTIMUM MILK TEMP’ range, though personal preference dictates the final setting. Pressing the START|STOP button initiates the frothing cycle, indicated by the flashing button surround. The appliance will automatically stop once the set temperature is reached, typically within 2-7 minutes depending on the milk quantity.

Ingredients can be added gradually through the measuring cap once mixing has started, especially when using heated settings, to allow the milk to warm up and help dissolve the ingredients. It is advised to add ingredients slowly and in small quantities to prevent the frothing disc from dislodging or stopping. The manual emphasizes that frothing results vary based on ingredients, with dense additions potentially reducing foam volume.

After frothing, the hot jug should be carefully removed using the handle and not placed on heat-sensitive surfaces. Excess air bubbles can be removed from frothed milk by gently tapping the jug on a bench. Swirling the frothed milk in a circular motion before pouring helps achieve a smooth texture. Frothed milk should be poured promptly to prevent separation and should not be reheated if not used immediately.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning is essential to minimize milk residue buildup. After each use, the milk jug, frothing disc, and heating chamber should be cleaned. Before cleaning, the appliance must be unplugged from the power outlet, and the jug and disc should be allowed to cool.

The stainless steel jug can be removed from the base. The inner heating chamber should be thoroughly cleaned with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue, paying attention to the key sensor components (marked 'a' in the diagram) to ensure no residue or spillage.

The milk frother attachment (frothing disc) and the milk jug should be washed thoroughly in warm soapy water. While the milk jug, jug lid, measuring cap, and frothing discs are dishwasher safe (top shelf only), hand washing is recommended for the frothing discs to extend their lifespan.

It is crucial not to use alkaline or abrasive cleaning agents, steel wool, or scouring pads, as these can damage the surface of the appliance. The power base, power cord, and power plug should never be immersed in water or any other liquid. The underside of the jug must always be dry before being placed onto the power base.
