Overview

This document serves as a Product Safety Guide for a range of Brother printer models, including the HL-JF1, HL-J6010DW, MFC-J2340DW, MFC-J2740DW, MFC-J3540DW, MFC-J3940DW, MFC-J5340DW, MFC-J5345DW, MFC-J5740DW, MFC-J5955DW, MFC-J6540DW, MFC-J6940DW, MFC-J6955DW, MFC-J6957DW, and MFC-J6959DW. It provides essential safety instructions and warnings to ensure safe operation and maintenance of these devices.

The primary function of these devices is printing, and some models also include fax, scanning, and wireless LAN capabilities. The guide emphasizes the importance of reading and following all warnings and instructions to prevent personal injury or property damage, including fire, electrical shock, burns, or suffocation. It also directs users to the Online User's Guide for more advanced instructions and product specifications.

Usage Features:

The guide outlines several important considerations for safe usage:

  • Safe Location: Users are advised to place the product in a location where the temperature remains between 10°C and 35°C, with humidity between 20% and 80%, and no condensation. It should not be installed or used in areas where explosive or electrically conductive dusts are generated. Direct sunlight, excessive heat, open flames, corrosive gases, moisture, or dust should be avoided to prevent electrical shock, short circuits, or fire.
  • Stable Surface: The product should be placed on a flat, stable surface, free from vibration and shocks. For models with fax functionality, it should be near a telephone socket and a standard grounded electrical socket.
  • Avoid Busy Areas: To prevent accidental knocking over, the product should be placed in a safe location away from busy areas.
  • Cable Management: Cables and cords leading to the product must be secured to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Object Placement: Heavy objects should not be placed on the product. Objects should also not be placed around the product, as this could block access to the electrical socket in an emergency.
  • Magnetic Fields: The product should not be placed next to devices that contain magnets or generate magnetic fields, as this can interfere with operation and cause print quality problems.
  • Tilted Surfaces: Avoid placing the product on tilted or slanted surfaces. After ink cartridges are installed, the product should not be tipped to prevent ink spillage and internal damage.
  • Interference Sources: Keep the product away from sources of interference such as speakers or cordless telephone base units, which can affect the product's electronic components.
  • Paper Output: Nothing should block printed pages or received faxes (for models with fax function).
  • Paper Tray Extension: When the paper tray is extended for large paper, ensure it does not extend past the edge of the surface to prevent the product from falling if the tray is hit.
  • Lifting the Product: For larger models (HL-JF1/HL-J6010DW/MFC-J2740DW/MFC-J3540DW/MFC-J3940DW/MFC-J5740DW/MFC-J5955DW/MFC-J6540DW/MFC-J6940DW/MFC-J6955DW/MFC-J6957DW/MFC-J6959DW), at least two people should lift the product, holding the front and back by the handhold indentations. Care should be taken not to trap fingers when setting it down.
  • Carrying the Product: Specific illustrations show areas to avoid holding when carrying the product to prevent it from slipping and causing injury. For MFC-J2340DW/MFC-J5340DW/MFC-J5345DW, the product should be carried by sliding hands into the handhold indentations on each side.
  • Paper Tray Removal: When carrying the product, remove expanded paper trays to prevent them from falling due to the weight of the paper.
  • Ink Contact: In case of ink contact with skin, eyes, or mouth, immediate washing with soap and water (skin), rinsing with water and consulting a doctor (eyes), or spitting out, rinsing, and consulting a doctor (mouth) is advised.
  • Paper Edges: Avoid running hands over the edges of paper to prevent injury from sharp edges.
  • Network Connection: For models with wired LAN, do not connect to a LAN connection subject to over-voltages.
  • Power-Saving Function: The machine has a power-saving function; deactivating it or delaying its activation will increase power consumption.

Maintenance Features:

The guide also provides instructions for safe maintenance:

  • Electrical Safety: Before accessing the inside of the product for routine maintenance (e.g., cleaning), always unplug the telephone line cord (if applicable) and then the power cord from the electrical socket. Also disconnect any telephone/RJ-11 or Ethernet/RJ-45 cables.
  • No Object Insertion: Do not push objects of any kind into slots or openings in the product, as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts.
  • Wet Hands: Do not handle the power plug with wet hands to avoid electrical shock.
  • Plug Insertion: Ensure the plug is fully inserted. Do not use the product or handle the cord if it is worn or frayed.
  • Plug Cleaning: Regularly unplug and clean the power plug with a dry cloth, focusing on the root and between the blades, to prevent dust accumulation that could cause a short circuit and fire.
  • Metal Objects on Plug: Do not drop metal objects or liquids on the power plug to prevent electrical shock or fire.
  • Power Source: Connect the product only to an AC power source within the range indicated on the rating label. Do not connect to a DC power source or inverter. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure of the power source.
  • Dismantling: Do not dismantle the product or attempt to service it yourself, as this could cause fire, electrical shock, or void the warranty. All servicing should be referred to Brother customer service or a local Brother dealer.
  • Damaged Product: If the product has been dropped or its casing damaged, unplug it immediately and contact Brother customer service or a local Brother dealer due to the possibility of electrical shock.
  • Liquid/Metal Inside: If water, other liquids, or metal objects get inside the product, immediately unplug it and contact Brother customer service or a local Brother dealer.
  • Thunderstorms: Do not use the product during a thunderstorm due to the remote risk of electrical shock from lightning.
  • Cleaning Substances: Do not use flammable substances, sprays, or organic solvents/liquids containing alcohol or ammonia to clean the inside or outside of the product, as this could cause a fire. Use only a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Metal Objects on Product: Do not place metal objects (clips, staples, jewelry) on the product, as contact with internal electrical parts could cause fire or electrical shock.
  • Liquid Containers: Do not place containers holding water or liquid on the product to prevent spills that could contact electrical parts and cause fire or electrical shock.
  • Unusual Conditions: If the product becomes unusually hot, releases smoke, generates strong smells, or if liquid is spilled on it, immediately unplug it and contact Brother customer service or a local Brother dealer.
  • Telephone Line Safety (Fax Models): Use caution when installing or modifying telephone lines. Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the line is unplugged. Do not install telephone wiring during a thunderstorm or in wet locations.
  • Power Cord Care: Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord, step on it, or place the product where the cord is stretched or strained. Do not pull on the middle of the AC power cord. Use only designated cables and the provided power cord, ensuring correct installation.
  • Ink Cartridge Handling: Be careful not to get ink in the eyes when replacing cartridges. Keep cartridges out of reach of children and avoid swallowing ink. Do not shake or dismantle ink cartridges unless instructed, as ink may leak.
  • Internal Labels: Do not remove or damage any caution or warning labels inside the product.
  • Moving Parts: Keep hands away from grey shaded areas shown in illustrations where parts are moving to prevent injury.
  • Cutter Blade (HL-JF1/MFC-J6959DW): Keep hands away from the cutter blade to prevent injury from its sharp edge.

The document also includes information on product warranty, liability, and declarations of conformity for various regions and functionalities (Wireless LAN, NFC, Wired LAN). It emphasizes that failure to follow safety instructions may invalidate the product's warranty.
