Overview

This document serves as a Product Safety Guide for a range of Brother multifunction devices, including models DCP-T220, DCP-T226, DCP-T420W, DCP-C421W, DCP-T425W, DCP-T426W, DCP-T428W, DCP-T520W, DCP-T720DW, DCP-T725DW, DCP-T820DW, and MFC-T920DW. It is crucial to read this guide thoroughly before operating the product or performing any maintenance to prevent personal injury or property damage. Brother Industries, Ltd. emphasizes that failure to follow these instructions may lead to risks such as fire, electrical shock, burns, or suffocation, and the company will not be liable for damage resulting from non-compliance.

Function Description

The Brother devices covered by this guide are multifunction products designed to perform various tasks, including printing, and for some models, scanning and faxing. These devices are intended for use in a range of environments, from home offices to small businesses. The guide specifically mentions models with Wireless LAN functionality and Wired LAN functionality, indicating network connectivity options for shared use and remote operation. The core function revolves around ink-based printing, utilizing genuine Brother ink bottles for optimal performance.

Usage Features

The guide provides extensive instructions on how to safely use the product, covering aspects from initial setup to daily operation.

  • Safe Location: Users are advised to place the product in a stable, level location free from vibration and shocks, with a temperature between 10°C and 35°C and humidity between 20% and 80%, avoiding condensation. It should not be exposed to direct sunlight, excessive heat, open flames, corrosive gases, moisture, or dust. Proximity to chemicals, especially organic solvents like benzene or paint thinner, is prohibited due to fire and electrical shock risks. The product should also be kept away from busy areas where it might be accidentally knocked over, and all cables must be secured to prevent tripping hazards. Heavy objects should not be placed on or around the product, and access to the electrical socket must remain unobstructed for emergency unplugging. For MFC models, the product should be near a telephone socket.
  • Electrical Safety: The product must be connected to an AC power source within the range indicated on its rating label, and never to a DC power source or inverter. For models like DCP-T520W, DCP-T720DW, DCP-T725DW, DCP-T820DW, and MFC-T920DW, an earthed plug is provided, and users should not attempt to defeat its safety purpose. The power cord should not be stepped on, stretched, or strained, and any worn or frayed cords should not be used. Pulling the middle of the AC power cord is prohibited as it may cause separation and electrical shock. Only the provided power cord and designated cables should be used, and extension cords are strongly discouraged. The product should be positioned to avoid pinching or constricting the power cord.
  • Handling and Operation: Users are instructed to wait until pages have fully exited the product before picking them up to avoid finger injuries. Specific illustrations highlight areas to avoid touching to prevent injury from sharp edges or moving parts. The product should always be carried by placing hands under the entire machine, not by holding the scanner cover, Jam Clear Cover, manual feed slot cover, or control panel, as this may lead to dropping and injury. If multiple devices are connected via USB, users might feel an electric charge when touching metal parts of the product.
  • Ink Bottle Usage: When refilling ink, users must be careful not to get ink in their eyes or mouth. Ink bottles should be kept out of reach of children, not shaken or twirled, and stored in a cool, dark place on a level surface, away from direct sunlight and temperature changes. Dropping or damaging ink bottles is prohibited. If ink is swallowed, users should spit it out, rinse their mouth, and consult a doctor immediately. The ink bottle cap and ink tank cap should not be swallowed by children or anyone else.
  • Wireless and Wired Network Models: For Wireless LAN models, specific operating frequencies and power outputs are detailed, and users are warned against altering emission frequency, increasing power, or using unspecified antennas. The equipment must not cause harmful interference to other radio services and should not be used near medical electrical equipment or pacemakers. It is also prohibited to use the equipment near planes or airports. For Wired LAN models, connecting to a LAN connection subject to over-voltages is prohibited.
  • Emergency Procedures: In case of unusual heat, smoke, strong smells, or liquid spills, the product must be immediately unplugged from the electrical socket, and Brother customer service or a local dealer should be contacted. If the product has been dropped or its casing damaged, it should be unplugged, and Brother customer service contacted. During thunderstorms, the product should not be used due to the risk of electrical shock from lightning. The product should not be used to report a gas leak.

Maintenance Features

The guide outlines several maintenance-related instructions, primarily focusing on safety during cleaning and troubleshooting.

  • Cleaning: Before cleaning the outside of the product and the scanner glass (for models with scanning functionality), the product must be unplugged from the wall outlet. Liquid or aerosol cleaners are prohibited; instead, a dry, lint-free cloth should be used. Flammable substances, sprays, or organic solvents containing alcohol or ammonia are strictly forbidden for cleaning the inside or outside of the product due to fire risk.
  • Power Plug Cleaning: The power plug should be unplugged regularly and cleaned with a dry cloth, focusing on the root and between the blades, to prevent dust accumulation that could lead to short circuits and fire.
  • Internal Access: There are high-voltage electrodes inside the product. Before accessing the inside for routine maintenance, such as cleaning, the telephone line cord (MFC models only) and then the power cord must be unplugged from the electrical socket. Any telephone/RJ-11 or Ethernet/RJ-45 cables must also be disconnected. Objects should not be pushed into slots or openings, as they may contact dangerous voltage points or short-out parts.
  • Servicing: Users are explicitly warned against dismantling the product or attempting to service it themselves, as this could cause fire, electrical shock, void the warranty, and expose them to dangerous voltage points. All servicing should be referred to Authorized Service Personnel or a local Brother dealer. A distinct change in the product's performance indicates a need for service.
  • Ink Tank Maintenance: Foreign objects should not be put into the ink tank.
  • Troubleshooting: If the product does not operate normally despite following operating instructions, only controls covered by the instructions should be adjusted. Incorrect adjustment of other controls may cause damage and require extensive work by a qualified technician.
  • Genuine Supplies: Brother strongly recommends using only genuine Brother ink bottles to ensure optimum performance and prevent damage to the print head. Damage caused by non-genuine ink or refilling empty tanks with ink from other sources will not be covered by the warranty.
