Using Your Sewing Machine
WARNING
Use only regular household electricity for the power source. Using other
power sources may result in re, electric shock, or damage to the machine.
Make sure that the plugs on the power cord are rmly inserted into the
electrical outlet and the power supply jack on the machine. Otherwise, a re
or electric shock may result.
Do not insert the plug on the power cord into an electrical outlet that is in
poor condition.
Turn off the main power and remove the plug in the following circumstances:
When you are away from the machine
After using the machine
When the power fails during use
When the machine does not operate correctly due to a bad connection or
a disconnection
During electrical storms
CAUTION
Use only the power cord included with this machine.
Do not use extension cords or multi-plug adapters with many other
appliances plugged in to them. Fire or electric shock may result.
Do not touch the plug with wet hands. Electric shock may result.
When unplugging the machine, always turn off the main power rst. Always
grasp the plug to remove it from the outlet. Pulling on the cord may damage
the cord, or lead to re or electric shock.
Do not allow the power cord to be cut, damaged, modied, forcefully bent,
pulled, twisted, or bundled. Do not place heavy objects on the cord. Do not
subject the cord to heat. These things may damage the cord and cause re
or electric shock. If the cord or plug is damaged, take the machine to your
authorized Brother Service Center for repairs before continuing use.
Unplug the power cord if the machine is not to be used for a long period of
time. Otherwise a re may result.
CAUTION
Always turn off the machine before you change
the needle. Otherwise, injuries may occur if the
foot controller is accidentally pressed and the
machine starts sewing.
Only use sewing machine needles for home
use. Other needles may bend or break and
cause injury.
Never sew with a bent needle. A bent needle
will easily break and cause injury.
Replacing the needle
Note
If a power outage occurs while the sewing
machine is being operated, turn off the main
power and unplug the power supply cord.
When restarting the sewing machine, follow the
necessary procedure to correctly operate the
machine.
(For U.S.A. only)
This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade wider
than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock,
this plug is intended to t in a polarized outlet only
one way. If the plug does not t fully in the outlet,
reverse the plug.
If it still does not t, contact a qualied electrician
to install the proper outlet. Do not modify the plug in
any way.

Always use the correct presser foot for the stitch pattern
you have chosen. If you use the wrong presser foot, the
needle may strike the presser foot and bend or break,

Overview

This document outlines the operation, usage, and maintenance of a Brother Sewing Machine, model BM-3600/BM-3700/BM-3700CT/BM-3700PT. It serves as a comprehensive guide for users, covering everything from basic threading to advanced sewing techniques and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Brother Sewing Machine is designed for various sewing tasks, offering versatility for both beginners and experienced users. Its primary function is to stitch fabrics together, but it also supports a range of decorative and utility stitches, including buttonholes. The machine is equipped with features that simplify common sewing challenges, such as needle threading and bobbin winding, making the sewing process more efficient and enjoyable.

Usage Features

The manual details several key usage features that enhance the user experience:

  • Lower Threading: This section provides step-by-step instructions for winding the bobbin and inserting it correctly into the bobbin case. It emphasizes the importance of proper tension for consistent stitching. The quick-set bobbin feature allows for easy bobbin insertion without needing to pull up the bobbin thread.
  • Upper Threading: Clear instructions guide the user through threading the upper thread from the spool pin to the needle. The automatic needle threader is a significant convenience feature, simplifying the often-fiddly process of threading the needle eye.
  • Start Sewing Straight Stitch: This fundamental section explains how to prepare the machine for basic straight stitching, including selecting the stitch, adjusting tension, and positioning the fabric. It covers essential steps like lowering the presser foot and starting the machine.
  • Sewing Buttonholes and Buttons: The machine offers an automatic buttonhole feature, allowing users to create perfectly sized buttonholes with minimal effort. The manual details how to attach the buttonhole foot, select the appropriate stitch, and sew various types of buttonholes. It also explains how to sew on buttons using the machine.
  • Replacing the Needle: Instructions are provided for safely replacing the sewing machine needle, emphasizing the correct orientation and type of needle for different fabrics and threads.
  • Changing the Presser Foot: The machine features a snap-on presser foot system, allowing for quick and easy changes between different presser feet for various sewing tasks, such as zipper feet, buttonhole feet, and general-purpose feet.
  • Reverse Sewing: This feature allows users to reinforce stitches at the beginning and end of a seam by sewing backward, preventing unraveling.
  • Changing the Sewing Direction: The manual explains how to pivot the fabric to change sewing direction, useful for corners and curves.
  • Sewing Thick Fabrics: Guidance is given on how to adjust the machine for sewing multiple layers or thick fabrics, ensuring smooth feeding and consistent stitch quality.
  • Sewing Thin Fabrics: Tips are provided for handling delicate or thin fabrics to prevent puckering or snagging.
  • Sewing Stretches: Instructions are included for working with stretchy fabrics, often requiring specific stitch types or tension adjustments to maintain fabric elasticity.
  • Stitching Cylindrical Pieces: The machine's free arm feature is highlighted for sewing cylindrical items like cuffs and pant hems, making it easier to maneuver fabric in tight spaces.
  • Filling Stitching Pieces: This refers to techniques for adding decorative or functional stitching to fill an area, potentially using zigzag or other utility stitches.
  • Presser Foot Installation Orientation: Clear diagrams show the correct way to attach and detach the presser foot holder and various presser feet.
  • Presser Foot Installation Orientation: This section provides visual guidance on how to correctly install the presser foot holder and individual presser feet, ensuring they are securely attached and aligned.
  • Connecting Plugs: Instructions for safely connecting the machine to a power source and the foot controller are provided, along with important safety warnings.
  • Main Power and Foot Controller: This section explains the function of the main power switch and how to use the foot controller to regulate sewing speed.
  • The Main Parts: A detailed diagram labels all the key components of the sewing machine, helping users identify and understand each part's function.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the sewing machine. The manual outlines several maintenance features:

  • Cleaning: Regular cleaning of the machine, particularly the bobbin area and feed dogs, is recommended to remove lint and dust buildup that can affect stitch quality and machine operation. The manual provides instructions on how to access these areas for cleaning.
  • Restrictions on Oiling: The manual specifies that the machine does not require user oiling, as it is factory-lubricated. Users are advised not to oil the machine themselves, as this could damage it.
  • Precautions on Storing the Machine: Guidelines are provided for storing the machine to protect it from damage and environmental factors. This includes keeping it away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, humidity, and dust.
  • Troubleshooting: While not a dedicated "maintenance" section, the manual implicitly supports maintenance by providing solutions to common problems like skipped stitches, thread breakage, and uneven tension, which often arise from improper setup or lack of cleaning.

The manual also includes important safety instructions and warnings to ensure safe operation and prevent accidents. It emphasizes the importance of reading the manual thoroughly before using the machine and adhering to all safety guidelines.
