Overview

This document is an instruction manual for Caple chimney hoods, specifically models CGC600SS, 700SS, 900SS, CGC600BK, 700BK, and 900BK. It provides essential information for installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

Caple chimney hoods are designed to extract unpleasant odors from the kitchen, improving air quality during and after cooking. They are not primarily intended to extract steam. The hoods can operate in two modes:

  • Extraction Mode: Contaminated air passes through a metal grease filter and is then expelled outside through ducting into the atmosphere. In this mode, charcoal filters should not be fitted.
  • Recirculation Mode: Contaminated air is cleaned by passing through both metal grease filters and special charcoal filters, which absorb cooking odors, before being returned to the kitchen.

Important Safety Information:

  • Installation work must be undertaken by a qualified electrician or competent person, ensuring compliance with all installation instructions and measurements.
  • For installation above a gas appliance, ventilation provisions must adhere to Gas Safety Codes of Practice (BS.6172, BS.5440, BS.6891, BS.5482) and relevant Building Regulations.
  • The fan motor includes a cut-out device that activates if the motor overheats. If this occurs, switch off the fan and allow it to cool; the device will reset automatically.
  • It is dangerous to alter specifications or modify the product.
  • If installed between wall cabinets, the cabinets must not overhang the hob.
  • If the room contains a fuel-burning appliance (e.g., central heating boiler), its flue must be room-sealed or balanced. Adequate air supply must be ensured if other flue types or appliances are present.
  • The ducting system must not connect to existing ventilation systems used for other purposes.
  • The extractor is supplied with flexible ducting up to 2 meters. If extended, additional ducting must maintain or exceed the cross-sectional area and minimize flow resistance to avoid increased noise and motor overload, which would invalidate the guarantee.
  • The appliance is designed for adult operation; children should not tamper with controls or play with it.
  • This product is for domestic use only.
  • Never leave frying pans unattended as overheated fats and oils can catch fire.
  • Never perform flambé cooking or leave naked flames under the hood.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Connection: The appliance must be correctly earthed. Connection details are: Brown = Live, Blue = Neutral, Yellow/Green = Earth.
  • Power Supply: Before connecting, ensure the mains voltage matches the rating plate.
  • Plug: Fitted with a 13 amp plug for easy access to a suitable outlet.
  • Direct Connection: If connecting directly to the electricity supply, the plug should be removed, and the 3-core mains cable permanently connected via an approved Switched Fused Spur outlet (BS1363 Part 4) with a 3 Amp fuse.
  • Compliance: Conforms to BS 800: 1988 and EEC Directive No. 78 308 regarding radio and television interference suppression.
  • Clearance Heights:
    • Electric hob (not exceeding 7kW): 650mm clearance required.
    • Gas hob (not exceeding 10kW): 650mm clearance required.
    • If appliance output exceeds 10kW, the distance between extractor and gas hob must increase by 10cm for every kW in excess.
    • The gas hob manufacturer's specified clearance must be followed if different.
    • For electric hobs, there is no mandatory clearance, so the quoted clearance should be followed.
    • If no hob manufacturer instructions are available, follow BS 6172 "Default Standard," ensuring a clear "box" above and around the hob. The default standard indicates 760mm clearance from burners to combustible worktop, effectively 790-800mm from the worktop surface.
  • Lamps:
    • Halogen lighting: 220-240V 20W halogen spot lamp.
    • Tungsten lighting: 220-240V 40W SES lamps.

Usage Features:

  • Controls (Manual Push Buttons):
    • Low button: Motor runs at low speed.
    • Mid button: Motor runs at mid speed.
    • High button: Motor runs at high speed.
    • Light button: Activates/deactivates two tungsten lamps.
    • On/Off button: Turns off both lights and motor.
  • Optimal Performance: Switch the hood on a few minutes before cooking and leave it running for approximately 15 minutes after cooking.
  • Cooking Safety: Ensure heating areas on the hob are covered with pots and pans when using the hob and cooker hood simultaneously.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Cleaning:
    • Isolate the cooker hood from the mains electricity supply before any maintenance or cleaning.
    • The cooker hood must be kept clean to prevent grease build-up, which can be a fire hazard.
    • Never use scouring pads or abrasive cleaners as they may scratch or damage surfaces.
    • Always wear protective gloves when cleaning.
    • Avoid excessive water, especially around the control panel.
  • External Cleaning:
    • Clean the metal casing, grill, and chimney at least once a month with a soft cloth wrung out in mild soapy water, then dry thoroughly.
  • Metal Grease Filter:
    • Clean at least every month. Can be washed by hand with mild soapy water or machine-washed in a dishwasher.
    • To remove, push inwardly on the two steel handles; replace, ensuring the handle springs back into position and is visible.
  • Charcoal Filter (for recirculation use only):
    • Not supplied with the extractor; must be purchased separately.
    • Cannot be cleaned; must be replaced approximately every three months or more frequently if the hood is used for over three hours per day.
    • To remove, push inwardly on the two retaining clips to disengage the security fixing.
    • Avoid damaging the charcoal filter during cleaning or replacement, as activated charcoal saturated with grease will stain.
  • Lamp Replacement:
    • Halogen: Unscrew two screws to release the metal surround, pull the lamp downwards to remove. When fitting a new lamp, ensure pins are correctly inserted. Avoid touching the lamp with uncovered fingers to prolong lamp life.
    • Tungsten: Turn off mains power, remove metal grease filters, unscrew lamps anticlockwise, replace with new lamps screwing clockwise, then refit filters and turn on power.
  • Troubleshooting: A dedicated section provides checks for common issues like the hood not working effectively (fan speed, filter cleanliness, ventilation, charcoal filter effectiveness, ducting blockages) and the hood switching off during operation (safety cut-out device).
  • Service and Guarantee: Repairs must not be attempted by inexperienced persons. Refer to Caple Service Centre. The guarantee covers defects due to faulty workmanship or materials for 12 months, provided documentation is supplied, the appliance is correctly installed and used for domestic purposes according to instructions, and has not been tampered with. Service calls for incorrect installation or customer misuse/abuse will be charged. Exclusions include damage from transportation, improper use, neglect, replacement of light bulbs or removable glass/plastic parts, costs for calls to correct improper installations or calls outside the UK, and appliances used in commercial environments or rental agreements.
