Questions and Answers

Overview

The Caple ZEL900 / ZEL900GM is a black glass chimney hood designed to extract unpleasant odours from the kitchen. It is not intended to extract steam. This appliance is for home use only and is not suitable for barbecuing, restaurants, or other commercial purposes. The cooker hood is made with high-quality materials and features a streamlined design. It is equipped with an electric motor and centrifugal fan, providing strong extraction with low noise. The hood also includes non-stick grease filters and is designed for easy installation.

To ensure optimal performance and safety, it is crucial to read the instruction manual thoroughly before installation and use. The appliance must only be used for its intended purpose; other uses are not permitted and may be dangerous. Caple will not be held liable for any damage caused by incorrect use.

Installation:

The cooker hood can be installed in two modes: ducted or recirculation. For ducted installation, the hood connects to an outside outlet via an extraction duct with an interior diameter of 150mm. Before installation, the unit must be turned off and unplugged. The cooker hood should be installed with a space of 650-760mm from the centre of the mesh grease filters to the hob (435-545mm from the bottom of the hood to the hob). The clearance required by the hob manufacturer must be followed. If no instructions are supplied with a gas hob, the minimum distance between the hob and the centre of the mesh grease filters must be at least 760mm. The width of the extractor hood must correspond to at least the width of the hob fitted below. When installed above a gas hob or range cooker, it is advised not to use all gas burners simultaneously for prolonged periods (max. 15 minutes) at the maximum setting to avoid the risk of burns from hot surfaces and potential damage to the extractor from excessive heat. If three or more burners are used simultaneously, the extractor should be operated at the maximum setting. Gas hobs should never be operated without pans on the burners, as excess heat can damage the extractor.

The installation process involves drilling holes for the wall bracket, screwing the bracket onto the wall, and then hanging the cooker hood onto the bracket hook. After hanging, the grease filters are removed, and two holes are marked inside the hood for safety screws. The hood is then removed, holes are drilled, wall plugs inserted, and safety screws fixed. A plastic duct is placed on the cooker hood outlet. For maximum efficiency, the ducting should not exceed 2.5 metres in length.

For recirculation mode, an outlet to the outside is not required, but charcoal filters must be installed. The charcoal filter (CAP61CF) is installed by first detaching the grease filter (by pressing the release button and pulling it downward). The activated charcoal filter is then fitted onto the side of the motor and turned clockwise to lock it into place. This process is repeated for the other side. It is essential to ensure the filter is securely locked to prevent it from loosening and becoming dangerous.

Operation - Touch Control:

The cooker hood features touch controls for easy operation:

  • On/Off button: Press and hold for 2-3 seconds to turn the extractor fan on. Press again to switch it off.
  • Low Speed button (1): Suitable for simmering and cooking that produces minimal steam or odour.
  • Medium Speed button (2): Ideal for standard cooking extraction.
  • High Speed button (3): Used when a high amount of steam or odours are produced, providing the most effective extraction.
  • Light button: Switches the light on and off.

To ensure the best performance, it is recommended to switch on the extractor 15 minutes before cooking and leave it running for 15 minutes after. This helps circulate and clean the air in the kitchen effectively. The performance of the extractor can vary based on factors such as the type of extraction, room volume, length of ducting, available ventilation, and the cleanliness of the filters.

Safety Instructions:

  • Never let children operate the machine.
  • The cooker hood and its filter should be cleaned regularly to maintain good working condition.
  • Clean the cooker hood according to the instruction manual to reduce the risk of fire.
  • When using a gas hob, do not leave naked flames under the extractor.
  • Before connecting the appliance, check that the power supply cord is not damaged.
  • If the room where the hood is to be used contains a fuel-burning appliance (e.g., a central heating boiler), its flue must be sealed or balanced. If other types of flues or appliances are fitted, ensure adequate air supply to the room.
  • The air must not be discharged into a flue used for exhausting fumes from appliances burning gas or other fuels. Regulations concerning air discharge must be conformed to.
  • Do not flambé under the cooker hood.
  • Never leave frying pans unattended during use, as overheated fats and oils may catch fire.
  • This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless supervised or instructed by a responsible person.
  • Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance.
  • Cleaning and user maintenance must not be performed by children without supervision.
  • Never immerse the appliance in water.
  • This appliance is intended for household and similar applications, such as staff kitchen areas, farmhouses, hotels, motels, and bed and breakfast environments.
  • If the power cable is damaged, it must only be replaced by a Caple appointed engineer.
  • When not in use and before cleaning, always isolate the appliance from the electrical supply.

Electrical Shock Hazard:

  • Only plug this unit into a properly earthed outlet. If in doubt, seek advice from a suitably qualified engineer.
  • Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, fire, or electrical shock.
  • This appliance must be connected to the mains by a competent person, preferably a qualified electrician who is a member of the N.I.C.E.I.C and complies with I.E.E and local regulations. Electrical information can be found on the rating plate.

Maintenance Features:

Before cleaning or maintenance, always switch off the electricity supply and remove the plug from the wall.

  • Regular Cleaning: Use a soft damp cloth with lukewarm, mildly soapy water or household cleaning detergent. Avoid using metal pads, chemicals, abrasive materials, abrasive cleaning creams, or stiff brushes.
  • Cleaning the Grease Filter: The grease filter should be cleaned monthly to minimize the risk of fire. It collects grease, smoke, and dust, directly affecting the cooker hood's efficiency. If not cleaned, the grease residue (which is potentially flammable) will saturate the filter. Filters can be easily cleaned with warm water and washing-up liquid, or in a dishwasher. Ensure no other items are washed with the filters to prevent food from becoming trapped in the gauze. Discolouration of grease filters in the dishwasher is normal and not a product fault.
  • Replacing Your Charcoal Filter: This applies only if the hood is used in recirculation mode (not vented to the outside). Charcoal filters trap cooking odours and need to be replaced. The frequency of replacement depends on how often the cooker hood is used, but it is recommended to replace them at least every 6 months. This extractor uses CAP61CF charcoal filters, which can be purchased directly from www.caple.co.uk.
  • Replacing the Bulb: The lights must be replaced by a qualified person. To replace, switch off the unit and unplug the appliance, push out and unclip the old LED light, and replace it with the same type and rated bulb/lamp fixing (LED lamp, max. 1.5W).

All packaging materials, including plastic bags and polystyrene foam, should be kept out of reach of children. Large or unstable objects should not be rested on any part of the appliance. Caple reserves the right to invalidate the guarantee if the product is incorrectly installed or misused. External covers should only be removed for servicing or maintenance by suitably qualified personnel.
