IntroductiontoFattyAcidMethylEster(FAME)biodiesel
FAMEbiodiesel,calledbiodieselfuelinthefollowingsection,consistsofafamilyoffuelsderivedfromvegetableoils
treatedwithmethylesters.
Therearetwomainbiodieselfueltypes:RapeseedMethylEster(RME)andSoybeanMethylEster(SME).RMEisa
blendofrapeseedandsunowermethylester,andisthepreferredcropinEurope.SMEisthepreferredcropinthe
UnitedStates.
Biodieselfuelisarenewablealternativefuelsource.Itsuseanddevelopmentispromotedworldwide,especiallyin
EuropeandintheUnitedStates.
NOTICE:Youremissionscontrolsystemiscompatiblewithupto5%biodieselfuel(B5).Beawarethattheuse
ofbiodieselfuelthatdoesnotcomplywiththestandardsmentionedinthissectioncouldleadtoseveredamageto
theengine,fuelsystemoraftertreatmentsystemofyourmachine.Theuseofnon-approvedfuelsmayvoidCASE
CONSTRUCTIONWarrantycoverage.
Biodieselfuelcanbeusedtorundieselenginesaspurebiodieselfuelorwhenblendedwithstandarddieselfuel:

B5:indicatestheblendof5%biodieseland95%dieselfuels.
NOTICE:NeverusebiodieselblendshigherthanB5.
Biodieselfuelhasseveralpositivefeaturesincomparisonwithdieselfuel:
•
Biodieselfueladdslubricitytothefuel,whichisbenecialinmanycircumstances,particularlyassulfurandaro-
maticsareremovedfromthefuel.
•
Biodieselhasagreatercetanenumberandburnscleaner.
•
Biodieselproduceslessparticulatematterandreducessmokeemissions.
•
Biodieselisfullybiodegradableandnon-toxic.
Dieselandbiodieselfuelspecications
TIER4FINALdieselfuelspecicationsarecoveredbythefollowing:
•
ASTMD975,StandardSpecicationforDieselFuelOils.(15ppmsulfurmaximum.)
Biodieselblendsarecoveredby:
•
UnitedStatesDieselFuelSpecicationASTMD975allowsupto5%biodieselsince2009.UnitedStatesfuel
suppliersareallowedtouseupto5%biodieselfuel(B5)tosupplythenetwork.
•
UnitedStatesBiodieselFuelSpecicationASTMD7467providesspecicationsforbiodieselblendsfromB6to
B20.
Purebiodiesel(B100)specicationiscoveredbythefollowingrequirements:
•
ASTMD6751-Standardspecicationforbiodieselfuelblendstock(B100)formiddledistillatefuels.
Beforerawoilcanbeconvertedintousablebiodieselfuel,itmustundergotransestericationtoremoveglycerides.
Duringthetransestericationprocess,theoilreactswithanalcoholtoseparatetheglycerinefromthefatorvegetable
oil.Thisprocessleavesbehindtwoproducts:methylester(thechemicalnameforbiodiesel)andglycerine(abyprod-
uctusuallysoldforuseinsoapsorotherproducts).
NOTICE:BiodieselfuelsapprovedforuseintheCASECONSTRUCTIONequipmentmustbetransesteriedand
complywiththeNorthAmericaStandardASTMD6751.
NOTICE:ColdPressedBiodiesel,ColdPressedOil,StraightVegetableOil(SVO),ormoregenerallyunrenedveg-
etableoilsusedasmotorfuel,arefuelsthatarenormallymadefromRapeseedoilorsimilarhighoilcontentcrops.
Thesekindsoffuelarenottransesteried,sotheydonotfulltheASTMD6751requirements.Thereisnorecog-
nizedqualitystandardavailableforthesetypesoffuel.ThereforetheuseofColdPressedBiodiesel,ColdPressed
