aural messages override those of TCAS, the GPWS aural test messages must be shown
to interrupt the TCAS aural test message.
I. Bearing Accuracy Test:
(1) The IFR TCAS-201 test set will be used to generate an intruder symbol on the aircraft’s
displays to make sure the bearing accuracy of the directional antennas. Position the aircraft
on a compass rose having 30° increments.
W
ARNING:
E
NSURE HYDRA ULIC POWER IS OFF (ENGINES S HOULD BE SHUT
DOWN). HAVING THE GEAR SIMULATORS IN THE UP POSITION WITH
HYDRAULIC POWER APPLIED COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE OR
INJURY. A GROUND POWER UNIT SHOULD BE USED.
CAUTION: Advise air trafc control before beginning procedure to acknowledge possible
interaction with other TCAS equipped aircraft.
NOTE: The test antenna must be within line-of-sight of the directional antenna under test. Avoid
positions where the landing gear or other obstructions are placed between the test antenna
and the aircraft’s directional antennas.
J. Top Antenna Test:
(1) Make sure that the landing gear is down and locked. Apply an altitude of 2000 feet using the
radio altimeter simulator. Set the squat switch simulator so the WOW switch is open “AIR”. The
landing gear simulator must remain down and locked on the squat switch simulator. This setup
takes the TCAS system out of TA only mode and isolates the bearing function to the top TCAS
antenna. The lower TCAS antenna operates as an omni-directional antenna in this condition
(no bearing information can be obtained from the omni-directional antenna).
K. Set TCAS to “TA/RA” mode. Set the IFR TCAS-201 ramp test set as follows:
Range 2.1 nautical miles
Altitude
2000 feet
Closure Rate 0 (zero) knots
Vertical Rate
0 (zero) feet/minute
Intruder Transponder Type
Mode-C ATCRBS
UUT Horizontal Distance
50 feet
UUT Vertical Distance
5feet

L. The test set should be located 50 feet horizontally from the TCAS II antenna (roughly at the outside
of the compass rose bearing lines) and slightly elevated vertically (use extender poles) from the top
TCAS antenna. Initiate the intruder test scenario on a compass heading of zero degrees pointing the
test antenna at the aircraft’s top TCAS antenna. Record the relative bearing to the intruder (Table 3)
from the aircraft’s trafc display. Stop the scenario after recording the data on Table 3. Move to the
next 30° heading and record the relative bearing to the intruder from the aircraft’s display. Repeat
the scenario test for each 30° heading, moving through each in a clockwise manner and stopping
the scenario prior to moving to the next compass position (symbol lock may occur if the scenario
runs constantly through each heading position).
M. Bottom Antenna Test:
(1) When testing the bottom antenna, shield the top directional antenna from Test Antenna with
echo-sorb (signal absorbing material) or equivalent and the Nose Landing Gear logic must be
UP and LOCKED (TA's appear as NO BEARING targets when gear logic is DOWN because
the bottom antenna is in omni directional mode).
