3. Gas Welding (and Cutting)
Oxy-acetylene torches may be used for weld-
ing an
d cu
tting,
and special
care
must be
t

ken to
prevent leaka
ge of
these gases,
with
consequent risk of fire and explosion.
The process will produce metal spatter and
e
y
e an
d skin p

otection

cessar
y
.
The
flame
is bright, an
d
eye
p
r
otection should be
used, but the ultra-violet emission is much
less than that from arc welding, and lighter fil-
ters may be used.
The process itself produces few toxic fumes,
b
u
t
such fumes and gase
s
may be produced
fro
m
coa
t
ings on the work, p
a
rticula
r
ly during
cutting away of damaged body parts, and
inhalation of the fumes should be avoided.
In
brazing
,
toxic
fume
s may be
produced f
r
om
the metals in the brazing rod, and a severe
h
a
zard
may arise
if b
r
azing rod
s
cont
aining
cadmium are used. In t
h
is e

ent

rticu
l
ar
care must be

ken to a

oid inha
lation of
fumes and expert advice may be required.
