What to do if my CM 646 will not operate in the lowering direction?
    • M
      Mia HernandezAug 6, 2025
If your CM Chain Hoists won't operate when lowering, consider these potential causes: * The brake is locked due to a suddenly applied load, shock load, or load removed by means other than operating the unit in the lowering direction. With the hoist under load and the chain taut, pull sharply on the hand chain in the lowering direction to loosen the brake. * The chain is binding. Refer to items 1A, 1B, and 1C for guidance on resolving chain binding issues. * The lower hook is all the way out, and the load chain is fully extended, making the chain taut between the liftwheel and loose end screw. Operate the unit in the hoisting direction only.

How to troubleshoot CM 646 Chain Hoists that is hard to operate in the hoisting direction?
    • N
      Nicholas ReidAug 11, 2025
If your CM Chain Hoists is hard to operate when hoisting, it might be due to: * Chain binding. See Items 1A, 1B, and 1C for solutions. * Chain twisted (3 ton capacity or larger). Rereeve chain on 3 and 4 ton unit, if both chains are twisted, capsize hook block through loop in chain until twists are removed. Caution - do not operate unit in hoisting direction with twisted chain or serious damage will result. * Overload. Reduce load or use correct capacity hoist.

If your CM Chain Hoists won't operate in either direction, it could be because: * The liftwheel gear key or friction hub key is missing or sheared. Install or replace the key. * The gears are jammed. Inspect for foreign matter in gear teeth.

Why is my CM 646 hard to operate in the lowering direction?
    • M
      Matthew CastilloAug 21, 2025
If your CM Chain Hoists is hard to operate when lowering, consider these possibilities: * Brake parts are corroded or coated with foreign matter. Disassemble the brake and clean thoroughly by wiping with a cloth. Do not wash in a solvent. Replace washers if gummy, visibly worn, or coated with a foreign matter. Keep washers and brake surfaces clean and dry. * Chain binding. See Items 1A, 1B and 1C for solutions.

Why is my CM 646 hard to operate in either direction?
    • L
      Lauren RyanOct 27, 2025
Your CM Chain Hoists might be hard to operate because: * The load chain is worn, causing it to bind between the liftwheel and chain guide. Check the chain's gauge and replace it if excessively worn. * The load chain is rusty, corroded, or clogged. Clean it using a non-acid or non-caustic solvent and lubricate it with Lubriplate®Bar and Chain Oil 10-R or an equivalent lubricant. * The load chain is damaged. Inspect for gouges, nicks, or twisted links and replace if damaged. * The liftwheel is clogged or worn, causing binding. Clean out the pockets and replace if excessively worn. * The hand chain is worn, causing binding. Check the chain's gauge. * The handwheel is clogged or worn. What to do if my CM 646 Chain Hoists will not hold load in suspension?
    • J
      Jade GregoryOct 31, 2025
If your CM Chain Hoists won't hold a load, it could be due to several reasons: * The lower hook or load side of the chain is on the wrong side of the liftwheel. Ensure the lower hook is on the same side of the liftwheel as the upper hook. * The pawl is not engaging with the ratchet. This could be due to a missing or broken pawl spring, or the pawl binding on the pawl stud. Replace the spring and clean the pawl to ensure free movement and proper engagement with the ratchet. Do not oil. * The ratchet teeth or pawl are worn or broken. Replace the pawl and/or ratchet. * The brake parts are worn. Replace the worn brake parts. * The brake friction surfaces are oily, dirty, or corroded. Disassemble the brake and clean thoroughly by wiping with a cloth. Replace washers if gummy, visibly...
