R - The
starting
motor which provides the power to crank the engine
thro
ugh
a conventional bendix
driv
e requires little

ention. except to see
that
the cables
on the switch
ar
e clean and tight, an d
tha
t
the
insulation on the wires is
not
cor-
roded
or
damaged.
It
is a good idea
to
occasionallv check
the
three
cap screws
holding the
starter
to the flywheel cov
er
to see t
hat
they are tight. No oiling is
required on the
unit
as bushings
wit
h lifetime lubrication are provided .

GENERATOR - The g
enerator
provided is of
the
d
ust
-proof third brush type, and
in normal conditions
requir
es little
attention
exc
ept
the
addition of 4 or 5
dr
ops of S.A.E. 20
or
30 engine oil ev
ery
60 hours to
the
oiler
at
the
front
and
at
the r
ear
bearings. When oiling
the
gen
erator
it is a good idea to also check
the
wiring
for
loose connection ;
and
worn
insulation. In most cases the
third
br
ush
need not be adjusted to control the
rat
e of charge as
this
can be conveniently done
by means of the combination
light switch and g
enerator
control.
If
the gen
erator
gives trouble, it is suggested
that
your
local deal
er
be contacted and he will give
the gen
erator
the
proper
service to
restore
it
to
its
original condition.
CORRODED
TE
RMINALS -
During
the weekly inspection outlined above. examine the
terminals
for
c
orro
sion. ann if present, wash
off
with
hot
wat
er
which may also be
used
for
cleaning the top of the
batt
ery
. Be sure to use sufficie
nt
water
to wash all
the
corr
osion down
thr
ough
the
box and to the
zr
ound . as corrosion, even when
washed
awa
y
fr
om
the
terminals. is still active and can damage
the
box badly. Two
to
thr
ee times a year remove
th
e ter minals. wash them as
out
lined above, then
br
ighten them UP with
wir
e wool,
apply
a
light
coat of vaseline and reassemble,
being
sur
e to
tighten
the
terminals
care
fully.

BATTERY - The
battery
which stores

, just as the water tank stores

a city. does so in a chemical

m. A regul
ar
routine should be established
for

ending the
battery
as
ther

ett
er
way to insure. th
at
it will give you
long trouble-
fr
ee service.
To service the
batter
y,
ta
ke off the
battery
cov
er
after
removing the wing nut
ann
the
batt
ery
hold-down clamp.
Once a week
or
o
fte
ner inspect th e wa tel' level ann b
ring
it three-eighths of an inch
above the plates by adding distilled
or
clean
soft
wat
er. Adding more
than
this
may mean
that
when the
batt
er
y is
warm
the
wat
er
may overflow through
the
vents. causing' corrosion. At the sam e time the specific
grav
ity
should be checked
ann if below 1225,
the
tra
ctor
should be on
erat
ed
with
the
light
swit
ch in
the
"Hizh
Charg
e" position a
zr
eat
er
p
ortion
of the time. and if up to full
charg
e, 1270
to 1285, th e "Low
Charg
e"
rat
e should be used a
gr
eat
er
portion of
th
e
tim
e.
In cold weath
er
batt
eries

er's

er
