Overview

The GEC 880 is a digital desktop counter intercom system designed to fulfill a wide variety of communication requirements, from security solutions in banks to ski-lift stations and ticket counters, and even isolation wards in hospitals. Its modular construction allows for the combination of multiple desktop counter intercom systems into a single integrated system. The basic unit is a digital intercom station, available in two versions (with and without a gooseneck microphone), enabling selection of the optimum station for diverse counter requirements.

Function Description:

The GEC 880 system facilitates clear and reliable two-way communication across counters or barriers. It comprises an operator station (GEC 881 or GEC 882) and a client-side setup including an external microphone and loudspeaker. The system is designed to provide optimal audio quality, with features to suppress noise and acoustic coupling. It supports various configurations for both single and multiple counter environments. The operator station features a plastic-reinforced silicon keypad with 15 keys, printed with easily understood pictograms for intuitive operation. The system can be configured to address specific acoustic challenges, such as high ambient noise or the need for directional sound projection.

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Operation: The operator station features a keypad with 15 pictograms for straightforward use.
  • Flexible Installation: The system supports various mounting options for both the operator station and client-side components. The operator station can be connected to a wall socket via a supplied CAT6 cable.
  • Client-Side Microphone Positioning: The external microphone should be mounted at a minimum distance from the loudspeaker (at least 1m/40 inches) and ideally at the bottom of the counter, directed towards the client, to optimize audio quality and reduce required volume at the operator station. For the Q400 microphone, its cardioid characteristic should be utilized by orienting it so the client's speech enters in the direction of the arrows. The MIC 480 build-in microphone is designed for panels up to 10 mm thick, with its opening facing downwards to meet IP53 classification.
  • Client-Side Loudspeaker Positioning: The external loudspeaker should have an impedance of 4 to 16 ohms. For greater distances, a 16 Ohm loudspeaker is preferable. Multiple loudspeakers can be connected in series or parallel, provided the total impedance does not drop below 4 ohms. Line arrays, such as the AL10-16, can be positioned horizontally or vertically to direct sound specifically to the customer's area, optimizing sound projection for single or multiple queues.
  • Service Mode: The GEC 880 includes a "SERVICE MODE" accessible via a specific key combination (㉠ + @ + ⓘ). This mode allows authorized personnel to adjust advanced parameters beyond the standard user settings, such as noise suppression (AEC), automatic switch-off time (ANK), microphone amplification (MEX, MHS), non-linear processing (NLP), and speaking zone size (SZE, SZI). The display indicates service mode by showing dots (e.g., S.T.D.D.Y.). Parameters can be scrolled through using the "+" key and adjusted with the "←" and "→" keys.
  • Parameter Reset: All parameters can be reset to factory presets by unplugging the power supply, pressing and holding the ㉠ + @ + ⓘ buttons, and then reconnecting the power supply. The display will show "RESET" for one second.
  • Acoustic Coupling Compensation: For multiple GEC 882 stations operating side-by-side, the "AHC" feature (via the "NLP" parameter in service mode, default value 3) should be active to compensate for acoustic coupling between stations.
  • Headset/Handset Support: The operator station includes an RJ10 socket for connecting a headset or handset.
  • AUX Output: An RJ45 socket provides an AUX output, configurable in service mode (MAX parameter) to reflect service side, user side, or both sides.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The station should be cleaned with a damp cloth. Avoid using water, liquid detergent, or paper towels.
  • Precautions: To prevent defects, the station should not be exposed to rain or moisture. It should not be opened by unauthorized personnel. Servicing must be performed by qualified personnel only.
  • Installation and Mounting: Mounting and installation of the GEC 880 and its equipment should only be carried out by authorized service personnel when the power supply is unplugged. The unit should only be opened in electrostatic protected areas.
  • Wiring Integrity: It is crucial to ensure correct cabling, especially the GND connection (shield-GND connected to pin 8 of the modular socket) and that the RJ45 cable is securely plugged into the station. Mis-connecting the wires of the outside microphone (polarity must be observed) or using a crossed-out RJ45 cable can cause irreparable damage.
  • Environmental Considerations: The station should not be used near water (e.g., bathtubs, pools), placed on unstable surfaces, or installed near heat sources, direct sunlight, excessive dust, or mechanical vibration/shock.
  • Troubleshooting: In case of bad sound quality, users are advised to enter Service Mode and verify that all parameters are set to their default values, or perform a "Parameter Reset." Checking all cabling for correctness is also recommended.
  • Documentation: A label on the bottom of the station displays the station type and serial number for reference. The manual should be kept in safe custody, and users/operators should not be given access to it to prevent "de-parametrisation" and facilitate on-site service lookups.
