Overview

This document is an instruction manual for a Craftsman Electric Weedwacker, model C944.512200. It details the operation, safety, assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting of this gardening appliance.

Function Description:

The Craftsman Electric Weedwacker is a gardening appliance designed for trimming, scalping, and mowing unwanted vegetation. It utilizes a rotating line to cut grass and weeds, making it suitable for areas where conventional lawn mowers cannot reach. The unit is specifically designed for line trimmer use and should not be used with blades or flailing devices. Its primary function is to maintain lawns and gardens by cutting vegetation to a desired length. The unit features a line limiter blade on the shield to cut excess line to the proper length during operation, ensuring efficient and consistent cutting.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Insulation: Double Insulated Construction for protection against electric shock.
  • Replacement Parts (User Replaceable):
    • Spool with 0.065 inch Trimmer Line (Part Number: C944.510210)
    • Assist Handle (Part Number: 530403805)
    • Bolt Carriage, 1/4-20 (Part Number: 530403886)
    • Wing Nut (Part Number: 530016118)
    • Shield Assembly (Part Number: 530404080)
  • Extension Cord Gauge Chart:
    • 25 Ft. (7.5 m): 18 Gauge
    • 50 Ft. (15 m): 16 Gauge
    • 100 Ft. (30 m): 16 Gauge

Usage Features:

  • Controls: The unit is operated via a trigger switch. Squeezing the trigger turns the unit on, and releasing it stops operation.
  • Assist Handle: An assist handle is provided to help hold and guide the unit during use, allowing for comfortable positioning and control. It can be adjusted up or down the tube to a comfortable position.
  • Trimmer Head: The trimmer head holds the cutting line and rotates during operation.
  • Tap Button: A tap button on the trimmer head is used to advance the cutting line during operation and to remove the spool for line replacement.
  • Recessed Plug: The unit features a recessed plug for attaching an extension cord, which should be looped through the handle and around a hook to prevent disconnection.
  • Operating Positions:
    • Trimming: Holding the trimmer head about 3 inches (8 cm) above the ground at an angle, allowing only the tip of the line to make contact.
    • Scalping: Removing unwanted vegetation down to the ground by holding the trimmer head about 3 inches (8 cm) above the ground at an angle, striking the ground around trees, posts, and monuments.
    • Mowing: Keeping the line parallel to the ground for cutting in areas inaccessible to conventional lawn mowers.
    • Sweeping: Using the fanning action of the rotating line for quick clean-up, keeping the line parallel to and above the surfaces being swept.
  • Line Advancement: The cutting line can be advanced by lightly tapping the bottom of the cutting head on the ground while the unit is running at full speed. The line limiter blade will cut the line to the proper length.
  • Safety Features:
    • Shield: A shield is installed to provide partial protection from thrown objects. It also houses the line limiter blade.
    • Double Insulation: Provides added protection against injury from internal electrical insulation failure.
    • Polarized Plug: The equipment has a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) and requires a polarized extension cord to reduce the risk of electrical shock.
    • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Protection: Recommended for the circuit or outlet used.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are advised to wear safety glasses, boots, and leg protection. Keep children, bystanders, and animals 50 feet (15 meters) away. Avoid operating the unit in rain, damp/wet locations, or near swimming pools. Do not use if tired, ill, or under the influence of alcohol/drugs/medication.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Checks: Before each use, users should check for loose fasteners and parts, and inspect for damaged or worn parts. After each use, the unit should be inspected and cleaned.
  • Cleaning: The unit and labels should be cleaned with a damp sponge and mild detergent. Air vents must be kept clean to prevent motor overheating.
  • Line Replacement: The spool can be removed by pulling on the tap button. The line is replaced with a pre-wound spool (C944.510210) or a 30-foot length of 0.065-inch Craftsman Pro Trimmer line. The line must be wound evenly and tightly onto the spool in the direction of the arrow on the spool.
  • Service: All electrical repairs, including housing, switch, and motor, must be performed by qualified service personnel at a Sears Service Centre. Replacement parts for double-insulated appliances must be manufacturer-recommended.
  • Storage: After each use, the unit should be stopped, disconnected from the power source, and stored indoors in a high, dry place out of reach of children. The unit should be unplugged and stored with all guards in place, ensuring the line limiter blade cannot cause injury.
  • Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting table is provided to address common issues such as the trimmer head stopping, line not advancing/breaking, line welding onto the spool, continuous line release, excessive line usage, and line pulling back into the head. Remedies include checking line routing, rewinding line, replacing spools, and contacting Sears Service.
