NEVER PLACE THE CHARGER ON TOP OF
THE BATTERY WHEN CHARGING.
ALWAYS PROVIDE FOR PROPER VENTILA-
TION DURING CHARGING.
AVOID COVERING THE CHARGER.
A BATTERY BEING CHARGED COULD EMIT
EXPLOSIVE GASSES. PREVENT SPARKS CLOSE
TO THE BATTERY. WHEN BATTERIES ARE
REACHING THE END OF THEIR LIFECYCLE
INTERNAL SPARKS MAY OCCUR.
SAFETY
ALL BATTERIES FAIL SOONER OR LATER. A

BATTERY ACID IS CORROSIVE. RINSE IMME-
DIATELY WITH WATER IF ACID COMES INTO
CONTACT WITH SKIN OR EYES, SEEK IMME-
DIATE MEDICAL ADVICE.
ALWAYS CHECK THAT THE CHARGER HAS
SWITCHED TO STEP 7 BEFORE LEAVING THE
CHARGER UNATTENDED AND CONNECTED
FOR LONG PERIODS. IF THE CHARGER
HAS NOT SWITCHED TO STEP 7 WITHIN
55 HOURS, THIS IS AN INDICATION OF
AN ERROR. MANUALLY DISCONNECT THE
CHARGER.
BATTERIES CONSUME WATER DURING USE
AND CHARGING. FOR BATTERIES WHERE
WATER CAN BE ADDED, THE WATER LEVEL
SHOULD BE CHECKED REGULARLY. IF THE
WATER LEVEL IS LOW ADD DISTILLED WATER.
THIS APPLIANCE IS NOT DESIGNED FOR USE
BY YOUNG CHILDREN OR PEOPLE WHO CAN-
NOT READ OR UNDERSTAND THE MANUAL
UNLESS THEY ARE UNDER THE SUPERVISION
OF A RESPONSIBLE PERSON TO ENSURE THAT
THEY CAN USE THE BATTERY CHARGER SAFELY.
THIS APPLIANCE CAN BE USED BY CHILDREN
AGED FROM 8 YEARS AND ABOVE AND PER-
SONS WITH REDUCED PHYSICAL, SENSORY
OR MENTAL CAPABILITIES OR LACK OF EXPE-
RIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE IF THEY HAVE
BEEN GIVEN SUPERVISION OR INSTRUC-
TION CONCERNING USE OF THE APPLIANCE
IN A SAFE WAY AND UNDERSTAND THE
HAZARDS INVOLVED. CHILDREN SHALL NOT
PLAY WITH THE APPLIANCE. CLEANING AND
USER MAINTENANCE SHALL NOT BE MADE
BY CHILDREN WITHOUT SUPERVISION.
CONNECTION TO THE MAINS SUPPLY
MUST BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
NATIONAL REGULATIONS FOR ELECTRICAL
INSTALLATIONS.
THE CHARGER MUST ONLY BE CONNECTED
TO AN EARTHED SOCKET OUTLET.
THE CHARGER IS DESIGNED FOR INDOOR
USE. DO NOT EXPOSE TO RAIN OR SNOW.

Overview

This document describes the CTEK MXTS 70, a professional switch mode battery charger designed for various lead-acid battery types.

Function Description

The MXTS 70 is an advanced battery charger that offers both charging and power supply functionalities. It features an 8-step fully automatic charging cycle, ensuring optimal charging for different battery conditions. The charger can detect sulphated batteries and apply a pulsing current and voltage to remove sulfates, restoring battery capacity (Desulphation). It performs a soft start to test if the battery can accept a charge, preventing charging of defective batteries. The bulk charging step charges the battery with maximum current up to approximately 80% capacity, followed by an absorption phase that charges with declining current to maximize capacity up to 100%. An analysis step tests if the battery can hold a charge, indicating if replacement is needed for batteries that cannot. For Ca/Ca batteries or deeply discharged batteries, a recondition step is available, increasing voltage to create controlled gassing, mixing battery acid, and returning energy to the battery. The charger then enters a float stage, maintaining battery voltage with a constant voltage charge, and finally a pulse stage, monitoring battery voltage and providing pulses to keep the battery fully charged at 95-100% capacity.

Beyond charging, the MXTS 70 can also function as a power supply, providing a constant voltage and adjustable current limit for vehicle systems or float maintenance. This mode allows users to set specific voltage and current parameters from the front panel.

The charger incorporates several safety features, including reverse polarity protection, which prevents damage if battery clamps are incorrectly connected. It also monitors for over-voltage, battery overheating, low battery voltage in supply mode, high current in supply mode, and over-voltage protection, indicating errors through dedicated lamps and display codes. A temperature sensor automatically adjusts charging voltage to optimize charge at ambient temperature.

*Back current drain is the current that drains the battery if the charger is not connected to the mains. CTEK chargers have a very low back current. **The quality of the charging voltage and charging current is very important. A high current ripple heats up the battery which has an aging effect on the positive electrode. High voltage ripple could harm other equipment that is connected to the battery. CTEK battery chargers produce very clean voltage and current with low ripple.

Usage Features

The MXTS 70 offers a user-friendly interface with a MODE-button to select charging programs (NORMAL, AGM, Ca/Ca, BOOST, SUPPLY) and a SET-button to adjust parameters like voltage, current, and temperature compensation. The display provides real-time indications of output voltage, current, elapsed charging time, and error codes.

Charging Programs:

  • NORMAL: For GEL, WET, and MF batteries (20-1500Ah).
  • AGM: For most AGM batteries; some AGM may require lower voltage (NORMAL Mode) (20-1500Ah).
  • Ca/Ca: For Ca/Ca batteries, maximizing charge with minimum fluid loss, including a RECOND step (20-1500Ah).
  • BOOST: For recovery of stratified batteries (20-1500Ah).
  • SUPPLY: For power supply or float maintenance charging when 100% capacity is required; activates step 7 without time or voltage limitation (20-1500Ah).

Parameter Adjustment: Users can select voltage (12V/24V), current (10A to 70A, depending on setting), and activate temperature compensation. The charger provides estimated charging times for various battery sizes and charging currents.

Connectivity: The charger uses a cord set with female connectors for battery connection, a charger cable with male connectors for battery clamps (or eyelets M8), and a mains cable for power. A USB Type B contact is available for downloading customized charging programs, but not for mobile phone charging.

Mounting: The charger can be permanently mounted on a firm surface using screws, ensuring adequate space for air cooling.

Maintenance Features

The MXTS 70 requires minimal maintenance. Users should regularly check the charger cables for cracks or damage and ensure the bend protection is intact. A damaged cord must be returned to the retailer, and a damaged mains cable must be replaced by a CTEK representative.

For batteries where water can be added, the water level should be checked regularly, and distilled water added if the level is low.

The charger is sealed, and opening it or damaging the seal will void the warranty. Cleaning and user maintenance should not be performed by children without supervision.

The device is designed for indoor use and should not be exposed to rain or snow.
