Steering the Tractor
Youri1000seriestractoris equippedwith aninnovative
steeringdesignwhichissomewhatdifferentfromthatof
thetraditionalsteeringwheeltypelawntractor.Turning
thesteeringwheelnotonlyturnsthefrontwheels,but
alsocontrolsthe drivelinkageofthe two hydrotransmis-
sionsthatdrivethetractor.Thisfeatureallowsyouto
varythe radiusof turnsfroma normalwideturndownto
a zeroturn.Somepracticemaybe requiredto become
accustomedtothe steeringof yourtractor.Thesteering
worksasfollows:
° The steeringwheelturnsapproximatelytwo turnsstop
to stop.Withthe centerpositionbeingthe straight
aheadposition.
° Minorturnsofthe steeringwheelfromthecenter
position(up to approx.100) willturnonlythefront
axlesand resultinwiderturns.
° Increasingtheturn of the steeringwheel (beyond10°)
resultsin increasinglytighterturns.As the steering
mechanismturnsthefrontwheels,italsochanges
thepositionof the transmissiondrivelinkageto slow
downtheinnerrearwheelintheturnandadjustthe
speedoftheouterwheelas necessaryto complete
thedesiredturn.Turnthe steeringwheelbackto the
centerpositionastheturniscompleted.
NOTE:It is not necessarytoreleasethedrivepedal
whenmakinga turn.Thechangeto the transmission
linkageoccursregardlessofhowfar the drivepedalis
depressed.Whenthesteeringwheelis straightened,the
tractorwillreturnto thespeedset bythedrivepedal.
° Turningthe steeringwheelfullyto its stopineither
directionwillfullyturnthefrontwheels,reversethe
directionofthe innerwheelandadjusttheouterwheel
speedtoexecutea zeroturn inthe chosendirection.
Turnthesteeringwheelbackto the centerpositionas
theturn is completed.
NOTE:Asthesteeringwheelis turnedfurthertoward
itsstop,theeffortneededto tumthesteeringwheel
increases.
IMPORTANT:Makingtightor zeroturnson grasswill
greatlyincreasethepotentialfordefacementoftheturf.
Driving On Slopes
IMPORTANT:Referto theSLOPEGAUGEonpage3 tohelp
determineslopeswhereyoumayoperatethetractorsafely.
• Mowupanddown slopes,neveracross.
• Watchforholes,ruts, bumps,rocks,or otherhidden
objects.Uneventerraincouldoverturnthemachine.
Tallgrasscanhideobstacles.
• Avoidturnswhendrivingon a slope.If a turnmust
be made,turndownhillon the slope.Turninguphill
increasesthe possibilityof a tractorrollover.
• Avoidstoppingwhendriving upa slope.If it is neces-
saryto stopwhiledrivingupa slope,start upsmoothly
andcarefullyto reducethe possibilityof flippingthe
tractoroverbackward.

Moving the Tractor Manually
Ifforanyreasonthetractorwill notdriveoryouwishto
movethetractor,engagethetwohydrotransmission
bypassrodsto manuallymovethe tractorshortdistances.
IMPORTANT:Nevertowordragthetractorwiththe rear
wheelsontheground.Evenwiththe bypassrodsengaged.
Doingso willdamagethetransmissions.
Toengagea bypassrod,pullthe rodrearwardthroughthe
slotuntiltheoffsetformtherodisoutsidethehitchplate.
Thenturnthe rodineitherdirectionandreleasesothat
theoffsetis lockedagainstthe hitchplate.Engageboth
bypassrodsto manuallymovethe tractor.SeeFigure8.

NOTE: Thetransmissionwill NOTengagewhenthe
hydrostaticbypassrodispulledout. Returnthe rodto its
normalpositionpriorto operatingthetractor.
Mowing

petsat least75 feet from themachine
whileit isinoperation.Stopmachineif
anyoneentersthe area.
ThistractorisequippedwithoneofCubCadet'shighquality
cuttingdecks.Thefollowinginformationwillbehelpfulwhen
usingthecuttingdeckwithyourtractor.
• Do not mowat highgroundspeed,especiallyifa
mulchkit orgrasscollectoris installed.
• Forbestresultsitisrecommendedthatthefirsttwolaps
becutwiththedischargethrowntowardsthecenter.
Afterthefirsttwolaps,reversethedirectionto throw
thedischargetotheoutsideforthebalanceofcutting.
Thiswillgivea betterappearancetothelawn.
• Do notcut thegrasstoo short.Shortgrassinvites
weedgrowthandyellowsquicklyin dryweather.
• Mowingshouldalwaysbe donewiththe engineat
fullthrottle.
