Overview

This document is the Owner's Manual for Panacea® Soft Touch Siderails, designed for use with Panacea 3000, 3250, and 3500 beds. It provides instructions, warnings, warranty information, and other important details for proper care and use of the siderails.

Function Description:

The Panacea Soft Touch Siderails are assist devices intended to be used with specific Direct Supply beds. Their primary function is to aid residents in entering or exiting the bed and to provide a stable handhold for self-positioning within the bed. They are designed to enhance resident safety and mobility within the bed environment.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Compatibility: The siderails are exclusively designed for use with Panacea 3000, 3250, and 3500 beds. Using them with other bed models or brands is strictly warned against, as it could lead to unsafe configurations, serious injury, or death.
  • Safe Working Load (SWL): The siderails are designed to be used with beds that have specific safe working loads:
    • Panacea 3000 beds: 450 pounds SWL
    • Panacea 3250 beds: 500 pounds SWL
    • Panacea 3500 beds: 600 pounds SWL
    • The SWL refers to the total weight, including the resident, mattress, bedding, headboards, footboards, siderails, and other accessories, evenly distributed on the sleep deck.
  • Safety Standards: The siderail design and testing meet or exceed the application of forces specified by the International Safety Standard IEC60601-2-52, “Particular requirements for the safety of electrically operated hospital beds,” figure 113.
  • Included Parts:
    • Siderail Assemblies:
      • 7540137BEI: (1) Siderail Assembly – Head, Right (NOT SHOWN) and (1) Siderail Assembly – Head, Left (SHOWN).
      • OR
      • 7540028BEI: (1) Siderail Assembly – Foot, Right (NOT SHOWN) and (1) Siderail Assembly – Foot, Left (SHOWN).
    • Bearings: (8) BEARING – Snap-In PP.
  • Required Tools: Plastic hammer for installation.

Usage Features:

  • Installation:
    1. Rail Location: Siderails are provided with labels on the mount plate indicating appropriate bed position locations (Head or Foot, Left or Right). The labels include warnings that "These side rails are not for pediatric use." For foot siderails, an arrow indicates placement, and the picture of the person should be ignored.
    2. Bed Attachment:
      • Insert snap-in nylon bearings into the sleep deck mount holes on the bed frame.
      • Insert siderail attachment pins into the outer and inner sleep deck mount holes, ensuring the rail is properly located (grooves should be on the inside of the inner mount holes).
      • Secure the siderail to the sleep deck by snapping a hair pin (located on the underside of the head or foot sleep deck between the two siderail holes) into the groove at the end of both siderail attachment pins. Verify all hair pins are properly seated.
      • Repeat these steps for the opposite rail.
  • Operation:
    • To Raise: Rotate the siderail upward and toward the head of the bed. Ensure the lock is engaged and functioning properly.
    • To Lower: Press the red button to disengage the lock, then rotate the siderail down.
  • Important Warnings:
    • Entrapment Risk: Users must ensure that no openings within the assist rail body allow a resident's head or neck to become lodged. Proper mattress sizing is crucial to minimize gaps between the mattress and the assist rail. Mounting brackets must be correctly located to prevent head/neck entrapment between the head/foot panel and the assist rail. If multiple assist rails are used, the gap between them must be large enough for the trunk and hips to pass through.
    • Locking Verification: Always verify that the assist rail is locked in place before use to prevent injury.
    • Bed System Assessment: An optimal bed system assessment should be conducted on each resident by a qualified clinician or medical provider to ensure maximum safety, in compliance with state and federal guidelines, including the Clinical Guidance for the Assessment and Implementation of Side Rails.
    • Damaged Parts: Remove the device from service if worn or broken parts are identified. Use only Panacea replacement parts; non-Panacea parts can cause entrapment, personal injury, and damage.
    • Intended Use Limitations: The assist rail is for aid in entering/exiting the bed and as a handhold for self-positioning. Do not exert excessive side pressure, use as push handles for moving the bed, or permit residents to climb over the device, as these actions can cause deformation, breakage, personal injury, or damage.
    • Restraint Considerations: Some states may prohibit assist rails or consider them restraints. Assess necessity on a case-by-case basis and document the need for any resident restraint. Contact state surveyors for guidance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Routine Inspection:
    1. Review "REDUCING THE RISK OF ENTRAPMENT" information in the manual.
    2. Review and inspect for compliance with all "WARNINGS" listed in the manual.
    3. Inspect all components for damage or excessive wear.
    4. Visually examine all welds for cracks.
    5. Inspect all bolts and fasteners (do not over-tighten bolts at pivot points).
  • Cleaning:
    • Clean with a mild solution of antiseptic cleaner and warm water.
    • Always read and follow all label instructions on the cleaning products.
    • DO NOT STEAM OR PRESSURE WASH the siderails.
  • Replacement Parts:
    • Replacement parts can be purchased by contacting customer service at 1-800-634-7328.
    • Frequently requested components include:
      • PN 1500096 – Hardware Bag (8 – E-rings; 8 – Snap-In Nylon Bearings).

Limited Warranty:

  • Warranty Period: The Panacea® Soft Touch Siderails come with a 3-year warranty for parts only, starting from the date of shipment.
  • Anticipated Usable Device Life: 3 years, based on normal use with proper maintenance, cleaning, and storage. However, continuous inspection and care are necessary, as replacement may be needed sooner in particular situations.
  • Coverage: The warranty covers defects in material or workmanship. Direct Supply Manufacturing, Inc. (DSMI) will repair or replace defective parts at its discretion.
  • Conditions: The warranty applies only if the device is properly maintained by the original purchaser for normal, indoor use. It does not cover normal wear and tear, modification, damage from abuse, improper use, failure to maintain, use exceeding published device limitations, or combination with another product. It also excludes fading, colorfastness, stains, spills, or exposure to chemicals, odors, heat, or light.
  • Disclaimer: DSMI disclaims all implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Liability for incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or lost profits, is limited to the price of the device or service. State laws may vary regarding these limitations.
  • Customer Service: For questions, warranty service requests, or to purchase replacement parts, contact Direct Supply Equipment & Furnishings at 1-800-634-7328, 6767 N. Industrial Road, Milwaukee, WI 53223, or SalesSupport@DirectSupply.com.
