Overview

This document is an installation and operating manual for a Dometic Roof-Top Air Conditioner, specifically the CARAVAN MODEL B3200, Type 3253.331.

Function Description:

The Dometic B3200 is a roof-top air conditioner designed for installation on caravans. Its primary function is to provide cooling and dehumidification, and with an optional electric heater, it can also offer supplemental heating. The unit is intended to maintain a desired indoor temperature, with its effectiveness dependent on the caravan's heat gain. It operates by circulating air within the caravan, removing moisture during normal operation, and providing either cool or warm air as selected by the user.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: B3200
  • Type: 3253.331
  • Nominal Compressor Capacity (KW): 3.2 KW (for cooling)
  • Electric Heater Capacity (KW): 1.5 KW (optional)
  • Electrical Rating: 220-240 VAC, 50Hz, 1 Phase
  • Full Load Amps (Compressor/Motor): 5.2/0.8 A
  • Locked Rotor Amps (Comp/Motor): 24/5.0 A
  • Circuit Protection: 10 Amp Time Delay Fuse or Circuit Breaker
  • Input Power (KW): 1.35 KW (cooling), 1.64 KW (heating)
  • Minimum Wire Size: 1mm² Copper, up to 8 meters
  • Generator Size (Manufacturer Guidelines): 1 Unit - 3.5KW, 2 Units - 5.0KW. Note that generators lose power at high altitudes and from lack of maintenance, and total caravan power usage must be considered.
  • Unit Weight: Approximately 45 Kilograms
  • Roof Opening Dimensions: 362mm x 362mm (± 3.2mm)
  • Roof Thickness: Minimum 25mm, maximum 100mm (alternate installation methods for roofs over 100mm thick)
  • Roof Load Requirement: Designed to support 65 Kg when the caravan is in motion (normally a 100Kg static load design meets this).
  • Acceptable Roof Slant: 8° to either side is acceptable; front to back slant is NOT acceptable.
  • Torque Specification for Mounting Bolts: 4.5 to 5.5 NM (Newton Meters) to compress the roof gasket to approximately 13mm.

Usage Features:

  • Selector Switch: Offers eight positions including "OFF", controlling fan speed (HIGH FAN, MED FAN, LOW FAN), cooling modes (HIGH COOL, MED COOL, LOW COOL), and heating mode (OPT HEAT, if equipped).
  • Thermostat: Controls the compressor ON/OFF operation for cooling within a temperature range of 18.5°C to 32.5°C. The thermostat does not control the optional electric heater.
  • Cooling Operation: Users can select desired temperature and fan speed. The compressor and fan start simultaneously when cooling is called for. A 2-3 minute wait is recommended before restarting the unit after manual shutdown to allow refrigerant pressures to equalize. The blower runs continuously to circulate air and maintain an even temperature.
  • Fan Operation: Allows air circulation without cooling or heating, with selectable HIGH, MED, or LOW fan speeds.
  • Heating Operation (Optional): If equipped, the electric heater can be turned on to remove chill on cool days. The selector switch is used to activate "OPT HEAT". The thermostat does not control the heater's ON/OFF cycle. If the optional heater is not installed but selected, the fan will run as "LOW FAN".
  • Condensation Management: The air conditioner removes moisture from the air during normal operation. Keeping doors and windows closed minimizes condensed moisture on cold surfaces. The manufacturer is not responsible for damage caused by condensed moisture.
  • Heat Gain Reduction: Recommendations include parking in shaded areas, using window shades, keeping windows/doors shut, minimizing heat-producing appliances, and starting the air conditioner early. Accessories like outdoor patios and window awnings can also help.

Maintenance Features:

  • Return Air Filters: Periodically remove the filters located above the removable panels in the air box, wash them with soap and warm water, let them dry, and reinstall. It is important never to run the air conditioner without the return air filter in place to prevent evaporator coil plugging.
  • Air Box Housing and Control Panel: Clean with a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent. Avoid furniture polish or scouring powders.
  • Blower Motor: Factory lubricated and requires no service under normal use.
  • Frost Prevention: If frost forms on the evaporator coil, inspect and clean the filter if dirty, ensure air louvers are not obstructed, and adjust the thermostat to a warmer setting. If frosting continues, operate on LOW, MED, or HIGH FAN only until the coil is clear of frost.
  • Troubleshooting: Before calling for service, check if the caravan's power source (motor generator or land line) is running and properly sized, and check fuses or circuit breakers.
  • Professional Service: The unit must be serviced by qualified personnel. Any damaged wiring or supply cord must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or a similarly qualified person.
  • Information for Service: When calling for service, provide the Air Conditioner Model and Serial Number (found on the rating plate on the base pan) and the Air Distribution Box Kit Part and Serial Number (found on the rating plate on the ceiling template, visible through the air box filter grill opening).
