Overview

The provided document is an owner's manual for the VacuFlush Sanitation System, specifically covering the 500 Plus Series, 1000 Series, and Model 706 Toilets. This system is designed to provide a comfortable, efficient, and reliable marine sanitation solution.

Function Description

The VacuFlush Sanitation System is a Type III Marine Sanitation Device (MSD) certified by the USCG, meaning it's designed to permit toilet operation without direct discharge of untreated waste. This allows for onboard toilet use near swimmers, beaches, or shellfish beds. The core function of the system revolves around a vacuum-assisted flush mechanism that uses freshwater. Unlike saltwater systems, the freshwater flush eliminates unpleasant sulfide odors and extends the lifespan of system components by preventing saltwater and impurities from accumulating.

The system operates by storing vacuum energy in a Vacuum Tank. A Vacuum Switch on the tank monitors the vacuum level. When the vacuum drops after a flush, the switch signals the Vacuum Pump to energize and restore the operating vacuum level, a process that typically takes less than a minute. For smaller crafts, a Vacuum Generator combines the vacuum tank and pump into a single, compact unit, reducing installation time and hose runs.

The Vacuum Pump itself is an electric, straight-through bellows type, designed to efficiently handle both air and liquid, including solids, without clogging. It features two duckbill valves to prevent backflow of waste and vacuum.

Waste is directed to Holding Tanks, which are constructed from thick polyethylene for durability and have no seams. These tanks require a deodorant additive to control odors. A TankWatch® Level Indicator uses micro-float switches to activate an indicator panel, showing the tank's fill level.

For discharge, the system connects to a Dockside Discharge Deck Fitting for pump-out at marinas. An optional overboard discharge pump (T-series SaniPump™) allows for discharge at sea, provided it's outside the three-mile limit and activated by a keyed switch for security. An In-Line Vent Filter (SaniGard™) with activated filter media removes malodors from the holding tank vent before they can offend.

Usage Features

The VacuFlush system is designed for ease of use and comfort.

  • Simple One-Lever Flush Control: The toilet features a straightforward lever for flushing, eliminating complex instructions.
  • Freshwater Flush: Uses a small amount of water (a little over a pint) per flush, making it highly water-efficient and suitable for boats with limited water storage. This efficiency also means a smaller waste tank can last as long as a much larger one with an electric toilet.
  • Odor-Free Operation: The freshwater flush, combined with the SaniGard™ vent filter and the use of deodorant additives, contributes to an odor-free bathroom compartment.
  • Comfortable Design: The toilets feature adult-sized seats and vitreous china bowls with a large water surface to maintain cleanliness.
  • Automatic Vacuum Pump Operation: The vacuum pump starts automatically when needed, simplifying operation for the user.
  • Instruction Label: An instruction label is provided to ensure all users understand the proper operation of the system.
  • Optional Status Panels: The VacuFlush Status Panel indicates whether sufficient vacuum is available for the next flush (green light) or if the pump is running to build vacuum (red light). The VacuStat™ Indicator Panel continuously monitors vacuum status with a brushed metallic finish.
  • NozAll™ Pumpout Adapter: An optional accessory that provides an airtight seal between the boat's deck waste fitting and the pumpout station nozzle, making dockside pump-outs easy and convenient.

Maintenance Features

The manual outlines various maintenance procedures to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the VacuFlush system.

  • Regular Cleaning: The toilet bowl should be cleaned regularly using SeaLand® Bowl and Seal Cleaner, which is specifically formulated for SeaLand toilets and helps restore the bowl's shine and prevent mineral build-up under the rubber bowl seal. Caustic chemicals or drain-opening types should be avoided as they can damage seals.
  • Winterizing: The system can be winterized by either draining all water from the toilet(s) and holding tank or by flushing potable water-safe antifreeze through the system. Non-toxic antifreeze designated for potable water systems must be used.
  • Clearing Discharge Lines: For extended storage (more than two weeks), discharge lines should be cleared by flushing biodegradable laundry detergent (without bleach) through the system, followed by several flushes without water to minimize residual water in the hoses.
  • Scheduled Maintenance: A maintenance chart provides general guidelines for various tasks, including:
    • Monthly cleaning.
    • Annually tightening clamps and wire connections, checking and tightening water valve mounting screws, and cleaning the filter screen in the water valve.
    • Checking pump and in-line valves, toilet seals, vacuum breaker, and water valve every 2-3 or 3-5 years, or as needed.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive guide helps identify and resolve common issues such as water not staying in the bowl, flush ball not closing or opening completely, water not shutting off, water not entering the bowl properly, vacuum pump running too often or not shutting off, toilet not flushing, blockages, and pump odors.
  • Spare Parts: A "On Board Spare Parts Calculation Chart" helps users determine the necessary spare parts based on the number and type of toilets and pumps in their system.
  • VacuFlush Maintenance Kit: A convenient kit (item number 310228) is available, containing essential replacement parts for routine maintenance, including a vacuum tester, water valve, seal kit, duckbill valves, and an owner's manual. This kit is particularly useful for those cruising to remote locations.
  • Vacuum Tester: A simple tool (also available separately as Part Number 530002) consisting of a vacuum gauge and a cone-shaped plug, designed to help locate vacuum leaks by isolating the toilet from the system.
  • Special Tissue: SeaLand rapid-dissolving toilet tissue is recommended to prevent clogging, as household tissues often contain adhesives that prevent them from breaking apart in low-water systems.
  • Deodorants: The manual discusses the types of deodorants (liquid vs. granulated, formaldehyde vs. non-formaldehyde) and their proper addition to the toilet bowl to reduce malodors and break down holding tank contents.
