Overview

This manual describes the Dometic VacuFlush® Toilet System, a sanitation system designed for marine use, specifically for new boats. The system utilizes a vacuum-based flushing mechanism to efficiently remove waste.

Function Description

The Dometic VacuFlush toilet system is a marine sanitation solution that provides efficient waste removal using vacuum technology. Unlike traditional gravity-fed systems, the VacuFlush system creates a vacuum to draw waste from the toilet bowl into a holding tank. This process is designed to be more water-efficient and to minimize odors. The system is available in two primary configurations: one with a foot pedal for flushing and another with an electric flush switch. Both configurations share the core vacuum-assisted waste removal principle.

The system's operation begins with a start-up procedure that involves filling the freshwater tank, turning on electrical power and water supply to the toilet, and then initiating the vacuum generation process. For foot pedal models, this involves pressing the foot pedal to allow water to flow to the vacuum pump, which then runs for about one minute to establish the operating vacuum level. For electric flush switch models, the start-up involves flushing the toilet multiple times (typically five) to allow the system to build vacuum. Each flush cycle during start-up takes approximately one minute.

Once the system is operational, adding water to the toilet bowl is a simple process. For foot pedal models, the pedal is raised until the desired water level is reached. This is primarily done when flushing solids. For electric flush switch models, an "Add Water" switch is pressed until the desired water level is achieved. Overfilling is prevented by an automatic shut-off mechanism in electric models.

Flushing the toilet involves activating the vacuum mechanism to clear the bowl. In foot pedal models, the pedal is pressed sharply down until the contents clear the bowl. A "popping" noise is normal during this action as the vacuum seal is broken. The pedal should be held for about three seconds and then allowed to snap back into position. If the pedal is released prematurely, it's important not to flush again until the vacuum pump stops running. A small amount of water will remain in the bowl after flushing. For systems equipped with a VacuFlush status panel, flushing should only occur when the green "OK to Flush" light is illuminated. If the red "Do Not Flush" light is on, it indicates that the system is either recharging the vacuum or the holding tank is full, and flushing should be avoided to prevent clogs.

In electric flush switch models, the "Flush" switch is pressed down momentarily and then released. Similar to the foot pedal models, flushing should only occur when the green "OK to Flush" light is on. The toilet will not flush otherwise. It takes approximately one minute for the vacuum to recharge after each flush. If the red "Do Not Flush" light is illuminated, it signifies that the system is recharging the vacuum or the holding tank is full, and flushing attempts should be avoided to prevent potential clogs.

Usage Features

The Dometic VacuFlush system offers several features designed for user convenience and efficient operation. The choice between a foot pedal and an electric flush switch provides flexibility in control, catering to different user preferences.

The system's vacuum technology contributes to water conservation, as it typically requires less water per flush compared to conventional marine toilets. This is particularly beneficial for extended trips where freshwater supply might be limited. The quick-start guide emphasizes the importance of understanding the start-up procedure to ensure the system is properly pressurized and ready for use.

The inclusion of a status panel with "OK to Flush" and "Do Not Flush" indicator lights (for certain models) provides clear visual cues to the user regarding the system's readiness. This helps prevent premature flushing, which could lead to inefficient operation or potential clogs. The automatic shut-off for water flow in electric flush models when adding water helps prevent accidental overfilling of the bowl, enhancing user experience and preventing spills.

The design of the system aims to minimize odors by efficiently drawing waste into a sealed holding tank. The "popping" sound during a foot pedal flush is a normal indication of the vacuum seal breaking and the system engaging.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the Dometic VacuFlush system primarily involves proper usage and adherence to guidelines regarding what can be flushed. The manual strongly cautions against flushing foreign objects, emphasizing that only water, bodily wastes, and rapid-dissolving tissue paper should be introduced into the toilet. Items such as wet wipes, sanitary napkins, condoms, diapers, razor blades, paper cups, cotton swabs, food, hair, or liquids like oils or solvents are explicitly prohibited. Flushing these items can lead to clogging or damage to the toilet system, which would necessitate repairs.

The manual also highlights the importance of ensuring all guests understand the proper toilet operation before use, which is a crucial aspect of preventative maintenance. By educating users on what not to flush, the likelihood of system malfunctions and the need for repairs is significantly reduced.

While the quick-start guide focuses on immediate operational instructions, it directs users to the complete owner's manual for comprehensive information, which would include detailed maintenance procedures, troubleshooting tips, and parts information. The availability of a strong, worldwide network of Authorized Service Centers ensures that users can access professional assistance for servicing and maintaining their sanitation system. These centers are equipped to handle replacement parts needs, carrying a complete inventory for the Dometic product line. Contact information for customer service, including telephone, fax, and website, is provided for users to seek support for any issues or to obtain replacement parts. This robust support system is a key maintenance feature, ensuring that users can keep their VacuFlush toilet in "tip-top operating condition."
