Age-Based MAC Values
Age-based MAC factors the patient's age into the MAC value. Age-based MAC
calculates the patient’s age from the birth date entered in the Patient Admit menu.
Once it has identified an agent, the parameter box shows a value for the minimum
alveolar concentration of the agent (age-based MAC value).
1 age-based MAC (minimum alveolar concentration) is equal to 1 MAC (see below) x
10
bx
, where:
b = -0.00269 [yr
-1
], negative factor, slope of log
10
(MAC), unit: years
-1
and
x = age - 40
The following values are used as a basis for all MAC calculations related to
the age of the patient:
The table below shows typical agent parameter box displays when using age-
based MAC values.
CAUTION:
Age-based MAC values only apply if the patient's age is >= 1 year. An age-
based MAC of 1 year is used if the patient's age is < 1 year.
If the patient age is not entered, the default age-based MAC of 40 years is used.
