The Dreame M12 operates in several modes to adapt to different cleaning needs. By default, it powers on in Auto Mode, where it intelligently adjusts its suction power based on the cleaning situation, making it suitable for general floor washing. For scenarios where only liquid vacuuming is required, the Suction Mode can be selected. In this mode, the appliance vacuums water without dampening the brush roller, and no water is dispensed from the clean water tank.
When converted into a handheld vacuum, the device defaults to Standard Mode, providing effective cleaning for various surfaces. For more intensive handheld cleaning, a Turbo Mode is available, offering increased suction power.
A key feature of the Dreame M12 is its One-Touch Self-Cleaning function. After completing a cleaning task, the appliance can be placed back on its charging base to initiate a self-cleaning cycle. This function ensures the brush roller and internal components are cleaned, simplifying maintenance. It's important to note that self-cleaning requires the appliance to be charged and have a battery level of at least 15%, with sufficient water in the clean water tank.

To use as a floor washer, the Clean Water Tank needs to be filled. For enhanced cleaning performance, 10ml of officially-approved detergent can be added to a full clean water tank, shaken gently, and evenly. It's crucial to only add officially-approved cleaners.
To begin cleaning, the user gently steps on the brush cover and reclines the appliance backward. The Power Switch starts operation, and the Mode Switch allows toggling between Auto and Suction modes. While operating, the appliance should not be reclined more than 140° to prevent water leakage. It's also advised not to lift, move, tilt, or lay the appliance flat during operation to avoid used water flowing into the motor. If the appliance is in an upright position during work, the current task will be suspended.
After cleaning, the Used Water Tank must be emptied. This is done by pressing the release button, removing the tank, taking off the cover, pouring out the used water, and then re-installing the tank.

The handheld vacuum is started by briefly pressing the handvac Power Switch, and the handvac mode switch allows switching between Standard and Turbo modes.
