Usage Features

Proper Use: The device is exclusively designed for conveying air within an ambient air pressure range of 800 mbar to 1050 mbar and within the permitted ambient temperature range. It must always be operated with all protective devices in place, and the operating instructions must be observed. The customer's equipment must withstand the mechanical and thermal stresses generated by the product throughout its service life.

Improper Use (Prohibited and Hazardous):

  • Operating with imbalance (e.g., due to dirt or icing).
  • Operating in resonance mode or with heavy vibrations (including those transmitted from the customer system).
  • Moving air containing abrasive particles, highly corrosive air (unless specifically designed for it), or dust pollution.
  • Operating near flammable materials or in an explosive atmosphere.
  • Using as a safety component or for safety-related functions.
  • Operating with completely or partially disassembled or modified protective features.
  • Any application not explicitly listed under proper use.

Installation:

  • The device is a built-in component and must be secured adequately by the operator.
  • It must be transported in its original packaging and secured against slipping.
  • Mounting screws should be secured against accidental loosening (e.g., with self-locking screws).
  • Connecting the mechanical system requires careful handling to avoid bending blades or causing shock. Safety shoes and cut-resistant gloves are recommended.
  • The device must be isolated from vibrations if connected to air ducts.
  • Electrical connections must match the type plate data. Only cables designed for the specified current and temperature (105°C recommended) should be used. The protective earth must have a cross-section equal to or greater than the outer conductor.
  • The device must only be connected to circuits that can be switched off with an all-pole separating switch.
  • When using open-loop speed control with transformers or electronic voltage regulators (e.g., phase angle control), excessive current and noise may occur.
  • Frequency converters should only be used after consultation with ebm-papst, and sinusoidal filters should be fitted between the converter and the motor to protect against high-voltage transients and bearing currents. The motor's heating must be checked by the customer in such applications.

Safety Features:

  • The motor includes an internal thermal overload protector (TOP).
  • The motor capacitor has safety protection class P0/S0 according to EN 60252-1.
  • The device is base insulated, but electric voltage is present at the rotor and impeller in case of failure.
  • The motor restarts automatically after a power failure, posing a risk of injury.
  • A fixed protective device and guard grille are mandatory during operation to prevent contact with rotating parts. This device must withstand the kinetic energy of a detached fan blade at maximum speed and have no gaps allowing finger access.
  • Terminals and connections remain live even when the unit is shut off; a five-minute waiting period after disconnecting all poles is required before opening the device.
  • Capacitors must be discharged before working on the device to prevent electric shock.
  • The device's electrical equipment should be checked regularly, and loose connections or defective cables must be replaced immediately.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • No repairs should be performed on the device by the user; it must be returned to ebm-papst for repair or replacement.
  • If the device is out of use for some time (e.g., in storage), it is recommended to switch it on for at least two hours to evaporate condensate and move the bearings.

Cleaning:

  • The device should not be cleaned with a water jet or high-pressure cleaner.
  • Avoid using acid, alkali, or solvent-based cleaning agents.
  • Do not use pointed or sharp-edged objects for cleaning.

Safety Test (Every 6 Months):

  • Check the protective casing: Visual inspection for damage and integrity. Repair or replace if damaged.
  • Check the device for damage to blades and housing: Visual inspection. Replace if damaged.
  • Mounting of connection lines: Visual inspection. Fasten if loose.
  • Mounting of protective earth connection: Visual inspection. Fasten if loose.
  • Insulation of wires: Visual inspection for damage. Replace wires if damaged.
  • Weld seams: Visual inspection for crack formation. Replace device if cracks are found.
  • Abnormal bearing noise: Acoustic check. Replace device if abnormal noise is detected.

Troubleshooting and Remedies:

  • Impeller running roughly:
    • Possible Cause: Imbalance in rotating parts.
    • Remedy: Clean the device. If imbalance persists, replace the device. Remove any attached weight clips after cleaning.
  • Motor does not turn:
    • Possible Cause: Mechanical blockage.
    • Remedy: Switch off, de-energize, and remove blockage.
    • Possible Cause: Mains supply voltage faulty.
    • Remedy: Check mains supply, restore power.
    • Possible Cause: Faulty connection.
    • Remedy: De-energize, correct connection (refer to connection diagram).
    • Possible Cause: Thermal overload protector responded.
    • Remedy: Allow motor to cool, find and rectify error, cancel restart lock-out if necessary.
    • Possible Cause: Unacceptable operating point.
    • Remedy: Check operating point.
  • Overtemperature of motor:
    • Possible Cause: Ambient temperature too high.
    • Remedy: Lower ambient temperature if possible.
  • Insufficient cooling:
    • Remedy: Improve cooling. Contact ebm-papst for other problems.

Disposal:

  • Disassembly must be performed or supervised by qualified personnel.
  • The product should be disassembled into components for disposal using standard procedures.
  • Heavy parts: Components must be secured before unfastening to prevent injury or damage.
  • Component separation: Materials include steel, copper, aluminum, and plastic. Metallic materials are recyclable.
    • Categories: Steel and iron, aluminum, non-ferrous metal (e.g., motor windings), plastics (especially with brominated flame retardants), insulating materials, cables and wires, electronic scrap (e.g., circuit boards).
  • Magnets: Only ferrite magnets are used, which can be disposed of like normal iron and steel.
  • Electrical insulating materials: Treated similarly to cables and wires. Includes miscellaneous insulators in the terminal box, power lines, cables for internal wiring, and electrolytic capacitors.
  • Electronic components should be disposed of using proper procedures for electronic scrap.
  • Always observe country-specific legal regulations and disposal standards for waste. Contact ebm-papst for disposal questions.
