Do you have a question about the ebm-papst W3G400-CA22-73 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the W3G400-CA22-73 device, an ebm-papst Mulfingen GmbH & Co. KG product, designed as a built-in fan for air conveyance.

Function Description

The W3G400-CA22-73 is an external rotor motor fan primarily designed for conveying air according to its technical specifications. It operates as a built-in component within stationary systems, moving air at ambient pressures between 800 mbar and 1050 mbar. The fan is equipped with integrated protective functions that automatically switch off the motor in case of faults such as rotor position detection error, blocked rotor, or line undervoltage. An automatic restart follows once the blockage is removed or the line voltage returns to permitted values. The device features a soft start function and motor current limitation. Control is possible via a 0-10 VDC or PWM input, with a control interface safely disconnected from the mains. An alarm relay provides basic insulation for industrial applications.

Usage Features

The device is intended for use in stationary systems only, within the specified ambient temperature range. It must be operated with all protective devices in place and according to the operating instructions. Improper use, such as operating in an unbalanced state, with severe vibration, in medical life-sustaining equipment, conveying solids or abrasive/corrosive air, or in explosive atmospheres, is prohibited. The device is a built-in component, and the operator is responsible for ensuring adequate securing and EMC compliance of the entire setup.

Electrical Connection:

  • Requires a protective earth connection first.
  • Only use cables meeting specified installation regulations for voltage, current, insulation material, and capacity.
  • Cables must be routed to prevent contact with rotating parts.
  • For multiple devices connected in parallel, ensure sufficient protection against accidental contact and short the supply and PE connections before electrical hookup.
  • Connect to circuits that can be switched off with an all-pole disconnection switch.
  • Prevent water ingress into wires or cables by ensuring the cable end is in a dry environment and routing cables in a U-shaped loop or with a drip edge.
  • For residual current devices (RCDs), only pulse-current sensitive and/or AC/DC-sensitive devices (type A or B) are permissible, preferably with a trip threshold of 300 mA and delayed tripping (super-resistant, characteristic K).

Operation:

  • Ensure the device is properly installed with all safety mechanisms and professional electrical hookup before switching on.
  • Check for visible external damage and functional protective devices.
  • Verify clear airflow paths and remove any foreign matter.
  • Start the device by applying the nominal supply voltage and changing the input signal.
  • Ensure low-vibration operation across the entire speed control range to prevent bearing damage and shorter service life.
  • Switch off the device via the control input for normal operation.
  • For maintenance, disconnect from the power supply, ensuring the ground connection is disconnected last.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for a long service life.

Cleaning:

  • Check fans regularly for proper operation and soiling, adapting frequency to the degree of soiling.
  • Only clean when the fan is not in motion; switch off via the control input to prevent accidental start-up.
  • Dirt deposits on the motor housing can cause overheating.
  • Soiling of the impeller can cause vibration, shortening service life. If severe vibration occurs, switch off and clean immediately.
  • Preferred cleaning method is dry cleaning (e.g., compressed air). If water is required, use a conventional water hose or foam cleaning.
  • Do not use water jets, high-pressure cleaners, acids, alkalis, solvent-based cleaning agents, or pointed/sharp-edged objects.
  • Rinse off cleaning agents with clean water.

Safety Inspection:

  • Contact protection cover: Visual inspection every 6 months for intactness or damage. Repair or replace if damaged.
  • Device for damage to blades and housing: Visual inspection every 6 months. Replace if damaged.
  • Fastening the cables: Visual inspection every 6 months. Fasten if loose.
  • Fastening the protective earth terminal: Visual inspection every 6 months. Fasten if loose.
  • Insulation of cables for damage: Visual inspection every 6 months. Replace cables if damaged.
  • Condensation drainage holes for clogging: Visual inspection every 6 months. Open holes if clogged.
  • Welds for crack formation: Visual inspection every 6 months. Replace device if cracks are found.
  • Abnormal bearing noise: Acoustic inspection every 6 months. Replace device if abnormal noise persists.
  • High-voltage test: Perform with DC voltage corresponding to the peak value of the AC voltage required by the standard, due to Y capacitors in the integrated EMC filter.

General Maintenance:

  • The fan is equipped with maintenance-free ball bearings designed for a service life of 40,000 hours. Contact ebm-papst if bearing replacement is necessary after this period.
  • If the device is not operated for a lengthy period (e.g., every four months in a dry environment, or monthly in a damp environment), it should be started up and operated at full speed for 1-2 hours to move bearings and evaporate condensate.
  • Do not perform any repairs on the device; send it to ebm-papst for repair or replacement.

Disposal:

  • Disassembly must be performed or supervised by qualified personnel.
  • Heavy parts of the product may drop off during disassembly; secure components before unfastening.
  • Separate components for recycling into categories: steel and iron, aluminum, non-ferrous metal (e.g., motor windings), plastics (especially with brominated flame retardants), insulating materials, cables and wires, and electronic scrap (e.g., circuit boards).
  • Ferrite magnets can be disposed of like normal iron and steel.
  • Contact ebm-papst for any disposal questions.
