230V~ SMOKE & HEAT ALARMS
EIB160e Series
Instruction Manual
with Rechargeable Battery Backup
The EIB160e series is supplied with an Easi-Fit base that
allows very quick and simple installation of the Smoke
Alarm, combined with simple detector head removal
and replacement. The Easi-Fit base automatically
connects both mains power and battery as the detector
head slides on to the Easi-Fit base.
Up to 12 Smoke/Heat Alarms can be interconnected
so that when one senses fire all the units alarm. (More
Alarms can be interconnected. Please contact your
local distributor for more information.)
Interconnection can be achieved by hardwire or through
a modular RF module, the EIB100MRF, which can be
inserted into the base of the Alarm.
A green LED indicates the presence of mains power. A
red LED will flash rapidly in an alarm scenario.
The Smoke/Heat Alarms feature a large combined test/
hush button.
The “Test/Hush” button will either silence false alarms
or perform a unit self-test.
In “Test” mode the Alarm will perform a self-test and
sound the horn.
In “Hush” mode the Alarm will be silenced for a period
of approximately ten minutes to overcome false alarm
conditions. It will then automatically reset itself.

Overview

The EIB160e Series comprises 230V~ Smoke and Heat Alarms equipped with a rechargeable battery backup, designed for quick and simple installation. These alarms utilize an Easi-Fit base, which automatically connects both mains power and battery when the detector head is slid into place. The design allows for easy removal and replacement of the detector head.

Function Description:

The primary function of the EIB160e series alarms is to detect smoke or heat and alert occupants to potential fire hazards. Up to 12 Smoke/Heat Alarms can be interconnected, ensuring that when one unit senses fire, all interconnected units will sound an alarm. This interconnectedness can be achieved either through hardwiring or by inserting a modular RF module (EIB100MRF) into the alarm's base. The EIB100MRF RadioLINK+ Module also allows for remote location, testing, and silencing of EIB160e Series Alarms using a wireless controller like the EIB450 RadioLINK Alarm Controller.

A green LED on the alarm indicates the presence of mains power, while a rapidly flashing red LED signifies an alarm scenario. The alarms feature a large, combined "Test/Hush" button. In "Test" mode, pressing this button performs a self-test, sounding the horn to confirm functionality. In "Hush" mode, the button silences false alarms for approximately ten minutes, after which the alarm automatically resets to normal sensitivity. This reduced sensitivity is indicated by the red light flashing every 10 seconds instead of the normal 40 seconds. For interconnected alarms, pressing the Test/Silence button on the unit sensing smoke (indicated by a red light flashing every second) will silence all alarms in the system. Pressing the button on any other alarm will not silence the system.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Supply: 230V~ mains power with rechargeable battery backup.
  • Interconnection: Up to 12 Smoke/Heat Alarms can be interconnected (more alarms can be interconnected by contacting a local distributor). Interconnection can be hardwired or via the EIB100MRF modular RF module.
  • RF Module Compatibility: Compatible with EIB100MRF RadioLINK+ Module for wireless interconnection and control.
  • Current Requirement: Requires a current of 50mA.
  • Interconnect Wire: Minimum 0.75mm² cable, insulated and sheathed. Maximum 250 metres of wire (maximum resistance between detectors 50 Ohms).
  • Power Source for Inverters: Designed for Pure or True Sine Wave 230 Vac supply. If connecting to an inverter (e.g., PV solar panel), the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) must be less than 5%.
  • Operating Temperature: Not suitable for areas where temperature can exceed 40°C or be below 4°C.
  • Lifespan: Recommended replacement after 10 years.

Usage Features:

  • Easy Installation: Easi-Fit base allows for quick and simple installation and detector head removal/replacement.
  • Interconnected System: When one alarm detects fire, all interconnected units sound an alarm, providing widespread warning.
  • Test/Hush Button: A large, combined button for self-testing the alarm and silencing nuisance/false alarms for a 10-minute period.
  • Visual Indicators: Green LED for mains power, red LED for normal operation (flashes every 40 seconds), rapid red LED flash for alarm, and red LED flashing every 10 seconds for reduced sensitivity during hush mode.
  • Memory Function: The EIB160e series includes a memory function that indicates if the alarm has been activated in the past 24 hours (red LED flashes twice every 40 seconds). This memory is cleared after 24 hours or by pressing the test button.
  • Low Battery Warning: If mains power is disconnected and the battery is depleted, the unit will beep every 40 seconds for at least 30 days.
  • Escape Planning: Users are encouraged to familiarize their family with the alarm sound and practice fire drills, drawing up a floor plan with at least two escape routes from each room.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: Alarms should be cleaned regularly, especially in dusty areas. Use a vacuum cleaner's narrow nozzle attachment to remove dust, insects, and cobwebs from the sides and cover slots. The cover can be wiped with a damp, lint-free cloth.
  • Weekly Checks: All alarms should be checked weekly, particularly after initial installation or re-occupation. This includes checking the green mains indicator, the red LED flash for normal operation, and pressing the test button for up to 10 seconds to ensure the sensor chamber, electronics, and sounder are working.
  • Mains Battery Backup Check: Functioning of the mains battery backup should be checked directly after installation and then at least yearly by turning off mains power and pressing the test button.
  • Contamination Awareness: Users are warned against painting the alarm or allowing paint, water, or dust to contaminate it. Excessive dust and debris can impair performance and may lead to nuisance/false alarms. Contamination is considered normal wear and tear and is not covered by the guarantee.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as alarms sounding for no apparent reason, low battery beeps, and interconnected alarms not all sounding.
  • Removal for Long Periods: If premises are left without mains power for long periods (e.g., holiday homes), alarms should be removed from mounting plates to prevent battery depletion. They must be re-attached when premises are re-occupied.
  • Professional Servicing: Other than cleaning, no customer servicing is required. Repairs must be performed by the manufacturer.
  • Warranty: Brooks guarantees the alarm for five years from the date of purchase against defects due to faulty materials or workmanship under normal conditions of use and service. The warranty does not cover damage from accident, neglect, misuse, unauthorized dismantling, or contamination.
