Overview

The Elevate 2-Bike Platform Rack for Fat Tire and E-bikes (Part BC-4040-2-EF) is a robust carrier designed to transport two bicycles, including fat tire bikes and e-bikes, with a combined weight capacity of 200 lbs. This rack is specifically engineered for use with 2-inch hitch receivers and is not recommended for use with tow-behind trailers (including 5th wheel, camping, and RV trailers) or hitch adapters/extensions.

Function Description:

The primary function of this device is to securely transport up to two bicycles on the rear of a vehicle equipped with a 2-inch hitch receiver. It features a platform design where bike wheels rest in cradles, and J-hooks secure the bike frames. The carrier is designed to accommodate the larger tires often found on fat bikes and the heavier weight of e-bikes.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Recommended Tools for Assembly: Adjustable Wrench, 17mm Wrench, 24mm Wrench.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The carrier frame is assembled by connecting the support base assembly and horizontal arms using M10 carriage bolts, L pins, M10 flat washers, and M10 lock nuts. The vertical arm is then attached to the support base assembly using similar hardware. The folding shank is secured to the support base assembly with an M16 bolt, M16 lock nut, 5/8" pin, and clip for added safety. Cradles are slid onto the horizontal arms and tightened, with knobs facing up and loop ends outward/upward. Finally, long and short J-hook assemblies are installed onto the vertical arm.
  • Hitch Installation: The folding shank inserts into a 2-inch receiver and is secured using a stabilizing pin, 1/2" flat washer, 1/2" spring washer, and a clip.
  • Bike Mounting: Cradles and J-hooks are fully adjustable and slide along the arms. Users loosen vertical knobs on cradles and horizontal knobs on J-hooks to position them. Bikes are loaded by placing wheels directly into the cradles, ensuring they do not roll. J-hooks are then brought down to fit securely over the middle part of the bike frame. Straps on the cradles are used to secure the wheels.
  • Tilting Feature: For access to the rear of the vehicle, the 5/8" pin can be removed, allowing the carrier to tilt downward. It is crucial to securely grasp the bike carrier while the pin is out and to avoid placing bikes on the wheel cradle when operating this feature.
  • Storage Feature: The main vertical arm can be folded to a horizontal position (down on the opposite side of the folding shank) by spinning the L pin 90 degrees and pulling it out from the center hole. It can then be re-secured with the L pin or by folding the horizontal arms upward.
  • Folding the Carrier: The vertical arms can be folded to a horizontal position, and the folding shank assembly can be folded to a vertical position for compact storage.
  • Safety Guidelines:
    • Always read and follow all instructions.
    • Keep instructions with the product and review before each use.
    • Inspect the product before use for proper assembly, safe working order, and absence of defects.
    • Never modify the product.
    • Use common sense and general safety measures.
    • Ensure bike tires are away from vehicle exhaust to prevent damage.
    • Periodically check all hardware and straps during travel to ensure security.
    • Exercise caution when backing up, accounting for the added length of the carrier.
    • Drive carefully and use caution over speed bumps; do not drive off-road.
    • Avoid creating excessive downward vertical force on any part of the carrier, as this can exceed load capacity and cause damage to the carrier, bikes, or vehicle.
    • Remove the carrier before entering an automatic car wash.

Maintenance Features:

  • Inspection: Regular inspection of the product before use is critical to ensure all parts are in safe working order and free of defects. This includes checking hardware and straps during travel.
  • Cleaning: The manual does not specify cleaning instructions, but general care would involve cleaning as needed to prevent dirt and grime buildup.
  • Storage: The carrier features folding capabilities for more compact storage when not in use, helping to protect it from elements and damage.

This product is covered by a one-year general product warranty from the date of accepted delivery, covering defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service when correctly installed, operated, and maintained.
