Overview:
A pool le inacve during the winter months is suscepble to damage from freezing water. The purpose of winterizing
the pool is to ensure that the PVC plumbing lines and water quality components (pump, lter, heater, UV, etc.) do not
sustain freeze damage over the winter months. Each pool may potenally have a dierent equipment conguraon
and site condions vary, but the concepts are sll the same. The overall goal is to isolate the water in the pool from the
plumbing systems and then remove all of the water from these lines.
Depending on the pool design, removing a large volume of water from the pool is not recommended or necessary. In
most cases, gravity will suce to rid the pipes of water, although in some instances, a wet/dry vacuum or a small air
compressor with a quick coupler ng may be necessary to ush out the lines. When using a compressor, take care not
to exceed 10 psi in the system.

Overview

This document outlines the winterization procedures for various Endless Pools and Spa Series models, ensuring protection against freezing temperatures. Proper winterization is crucial as freeze damage is not covered under warranty. The document emphasizes that while general concepts apply, specific equipment configurations and site conditions may necessitate professional assistance.

Function Description:

The primary function of winterization is to prevent freeze damage to the pool and its components, particularly the PVC plumbing lines and water quality equipment (pump, filter, heater, UV). This is achieved by isolating the water in the pool from the plumbing systems and then thoroughly removing all water from these lines. For outdoor pools, additional steps involve supporting the cover and managing snow/water accumulation to prevent damage.

Important Technical Specifications & Usage Features (General):

  • Freeze Protection: Essential for pools susceptible to freezing temperatures.
  • Plumbing Isolation: The core principle involves separating pool water from the plumbing system.
  • Water Removal: All water must be removed from plumbing lines. Gravity drainage is often sufficient, but a wet/dry vacuum or a small air compressor (not exceeding 10 psi) may be required for stubborn lines or low spots.
  • Chemical Treatment: A non-chlorine winter chemical kit is recommended for the pool water. Kits with a "non-chlorine" floater that slowly disperses contents over winter are preferred. Endless Pools typically require kits for the smallest gallonage due to their relatively smaller size compared to industry standards.
  • Cover Support (Outdoors): A fully inflated "exercise ball" is recommended to support the cover when the water level is lowered. A cover pump should be placed on top of the cover to remove accumulating water, with discharge directed away from the pool area.
  • Snow Monitoring (Outdoors): For bi-fold covers, snow accumulation must be monitored and removed to prevent damage. For other covers, a support structure (plywood and lumber) is recommended under a tarp to prevent collapse from snow.
  • Power Disconnection: All pool equipment power must be turned off at the circuit breaker or electrical disconnect.

Usage Features (Endless Pools Original Series and WaterWell):

  • Skimmer Suction Plug:
    • Internal Skimmer Filter: Remove skimmer shroud lid and, if present, screws securing the shroud to the front base. Position shroud to expose flex hose. Disconnect flex hose and elbow from the suction thru-wall fitting. Plug the fitting with a 1.5" threaded plug with an o-ring. Store the skimmer assembly.
    • WaterWells (Internal Skimmer): Remove skimmer shroud lid and lift the shroud lid/skimmer housing. Disconnect flex hose and elbow from the suction thru-wall fitting. Plug the fitting with a 1.5" threaded plug with an o-ring. Store the skimmer assembly.
    • External Skimmer Filter: Remove all skimmer/filter components. For secondary suction lines (behind shroud for Original Series, opposing wall/above return for WaterWells), plug the fitting. If standard, use a 1.5" threaded plug with o-ring. If VGB, remove perforated cover and plug with a #10 rubber expanding winter plug.
  • Return Fitting Plug: Remove the three-piece eyeball fitting from the water quality system return thru-wall fitting. Plug the return fitting with a 1.5" threaded plug with an o-ring.
  • Hydrotherapy Jet Plugs: Remove perforated suction covers from jet suction fittings. Plug with a #10 rubber expanding winter plug (or 1.5" threaded plug with o-ring for standard thru-wall fittings). Remove all jet nozzles (retaining nylon rings) and plug bulkheads with #11 rubber expanding winter plugs.
  • Jet Pump Drainage: Remove threaded winterizing plugs near the front/bottom of the jet pump housing. Partially disconnect unions at the pump's suction and discharge to allow water to drain, ensuring no low spots.
  • Pool Water Level: Drain pool water to approximately 6" below the top-most edge of the liner.
  • Water Quality System Drainage: Loosen union collars to drain lines. For upgraded pumps (remote water quality systems, gas heaters, EZ50), remove two drain plugs from the pump housing. For filter tanks, remove the plug at the bottom.
  • Gas Heater Drainage: Remove water from the heat exchanger by removing or opening the winter drainage accommodation at its lowest point. Disconnect pressure switch from copper tube in certain models. Turn off gas and power toggle switch.

Usage Features (Endless Pools StreamLine):

  • Pool Water Level: Drain approximately 18" of water from the pool.
  • Plumbing Drainage: Once water level is below suction and return piping, remove all water from plumbing lines by loosening union collars.
  • Pump Drainage: Remove the two drain plugs from the two-speed pump housing.

Usage Features (Endless Pools Spa Series - Legacy Models 2010-2016):

  • Swim Spa Drainage: Drain the swim spa.
  • Jet Line Blow-out: If an air compressor is available, remove the drain plug from the jet pump housing and blow out the jet lines.
  • Plumbing Disconnection: Disconnect all plumbing unions and remove the drain plug from the jet pump housing. A shop vac may be useful to contain water.
  • Winter Cover Construction: If no bi-fold cover, construct a cover using 2x4s laid on edge across the width (16" on center), with a 2x4 along one long side on top to create a pitch. Cover with plywood and a tarp.

Usage Features (Endless Pools Fitness System Models - 2017-Present):

  • Swim Spa Drainage: Drain the swim spa.
  • Filter Removal: Remove filters and vacuum filter plumbing. Clean and store filters in a dry place.
  • Jet Line Blow-out: If an air compressor is available, remove the drain plug from the jet pump housing and blow out the jet lines.
  • Vessel Vacuuming: Vacuum the inside of the swim spa, removing all water from the vessel floor (including under the treadmill if applicable). Apply suction to all jets and footwell suction until all water is removed, ensuring air controls are open.
  • Plumbing Access: Remove equipment area doors and side panels to access plumbing.
  • Union Loosening: Loosen plumbing unions on pumps and heater one at a time, using a vacuum to catch water.
  • O-ring/Gasket Collection: Open all unions, collect O-rings/gaskets, and place them in a zip-lock bag. Vacuum ozone unit plumbing line.
  • Drain Line Vacuum: Open the drain line on the side of the swim spa and vacuum to remove all water.
  • Evaporation: Leave all unions open for moisture evaporation.
  • Treadmill Plumbing: If applicable, detach plumbing on the heat exchanger and vacuum to remove water.
  • Equipment Compartment: Replace and secure the equipment compartment door.
  • Covering:
    • Indoors: Prop covers open or leave partially/completely uncovered to allow airflow, prevent condensation/mold, and facilitate moisture evaporation.
    • Outdoors: Tarp the entire swim spa with a heavy-duty tarp to prevent moisture (rain/snow) and freezing damage. Secure all covers.
    • Heavy Snow Areas: Build a support structure inside the spa under the cover to prevent collapse/bowing.

Usage Features (Endless Pools Fiberglass Pool):

  • Pool Water Level: Drain water to just below the return fitting.
  • Pump Removal: Disconnect plumbing unions on both sides of the circulating pump and remove the pump. Store the pump in a safe place, retaining o-ring seals.
  • Plumbing/Heater Controller Drainage: Remove all water from plumbing lines and the heater controller using a shop vac or air compressor.
  • Return Line Plug: Remove the eyeball fitting and plug the return line with a 1.5" threaded plug with an o-ring.
  • Skimmer Filter Plug: Install a #10 winterizing plug in the bottom of the skimmer filter.
  • Secondary Suction Plug: Plug the secondary suction for the water quality system (4' down from top of fiberglass shell) with a #10 winterizing plug.
  • Skimmer Protection: Fill a plastic 2-liter or quart-sized bottle halfway with water or sand, cap it, and place it in the skimmer to prevent cracking if water freezes inside the skimmer housing.
  • Hydrotherapy Jet Winterization:
    • Remove jet nozzles (retaining nylon rings) and plug fittings with #11 winterizing plugs.
    • Close the ball valve on the suction side of the jet plumbing.
    • Remove drain plugs from the jet pump housing.
    • Use an air compressor on a pump drain plug to blow water out of jet lines, forcing water out of air pipes on top of jet fittings.
    • Turn off the air compressor. Close the ball valve on the return side, then open the ball valve on the suction side of the jet plumbing.
    • Use the air compressor to blow air through the jet pump and out into the pool through the jet suction fittings.
    • Close the ball valve on the suction side of the jet plumbing, then promptly turn off the air compressor.
  • Floatation: Float air pillows or inner tubes over the entire water surface and tie off.
  • Tarping: Tarp the pool and weigh down the tarp with water bottles, water pillows, or sandbags. (If a Retractable Security Cover was purchased, it can be used instead of a tarp over the air pillows/inner tubes).

Maintenance Features (General):

  • Periodic Cover Pump Check: For outdoor pools, periodically check the function of the cover pump and outlet over the winter.
  • Snow/Water Monitoring: Regularly monitor and remove excess snow/water from the cover to prevent damage.
