The TM-U220-i is a versatile and robust printer designed for various point-of-sale environments. This user-friendly device is built to handle the demands of daily operations, offering reliable performance and straightforward maintenance. Its design focuses on ease of use, from initial setup to routine paper and ribbon replacement, ensuring minimal downtime and efficient service.
Function Description
The TM-U220-i primarily functions as a receipt printer, utilizing a 9-pin serial impact dot matrix printing method to produce clear and legible output. It is capable of printing on roll paper of various widths, making it adaptable to different business needs. The printer is equipped with multiple interface options, including Ethernet, Serial, VGA, USB host, USB device, and a drawer kick connector, allowing for flexible integration into existing systems. An optional microSD card slot is also available when the PHP function is enabled, providing additional functionality. The device is designed to be installed horizontally on a flat surface, but it can also be mounted on a wall using an optional wall hanging bracket (WH-10), offering flexibility in placement within a workspace.
Usage Features
The TM-U220-i is designed for intuitive operation, making it easy for users to manage its functions.
Power Management:
The printer features a simple power switch for turning the device on and off. It takes approximately 30 seconds for the printer to be ready for printing after being powered on. For enhanced security, an enclosed power switch cover can be attached to prevent inadvertent changes to the power switch setting. This cover can be turned on and off by inserting a sharp-pointed object into the holes. To detach the cover, a sharp-pointed object is also used. It is crucial to immediately unplug the AC cable if an accident occurs with the power switch cover attached, as continued use may lead to fire or electric shock.
Control Panel:
The control panel provides essential status indicators and a paper feed button.
- POWER LED: This LED illuminates when the printer is powered on, indicating that the device is receiving power.
- ERROR LED: This LED indicates an error condition. Depending on the type of error, it may be steadily on or flashing. Users should refer to the troubleshooting section of the manual for specific error interpretations and resolutions.
- PAPER OUT LED: This LED lights up when the paper supply is exhausted. It flashes when the printer is in standby mode, signaling that new paper is needed.
- FEED button: This button allows users to manually feed paper, which is useful for testing or advancing paper after loading a new roll.
Connecting External Devices:
The printer offers various ports on its back for connecting external devices. These include Ethernet for network connectivity, Serial and VGA ports for specific system integrations, USB host ports for connecting peripherals, a USB device port for connecting to a host computer, and a drawer kick connector for controlling a cash drawer. When connecting external devices to the USB ports, users must confirm that the total rated current of these devices is less than 600 mA and use UL-approved external devices for North American users. USB cables should be passed through the cable band to prevent them from accidentally detaching. A protective cover should be firmly in place when the printer is in use. For outdoor Ethernet cable installations, devices without proper surge protection should be connected through devices that do have surge protection to prevent lightning damage. The optional Wireless LAN Cable Set (OT-WL01) can be connected to a USB port for wireless LAN connectivity, in which case the Ethernet cable should remain disconnected.
Connecting the AC Adapter:
Connecting the AC adapter involves a few simple steps:
- Firmly insert the DC connector of the AC adapter into the DC-in connector on the printer.
- Firmly insert the connector of the AC cable into the AC inlet on the AC adapter.
- Firmly insert the plug into a grounded wall outlet.
- Ensure the AC adapter is set with its label side facing down.
An optional power supply box (OT-BX220) is available to store the AC adapter under the printer, helping to keep the workspace tidy.
Maintenance Features
The TM-U220-i is designed for easy maintenance, particularly concerning the replacement of consumables like ribbon cassettes and roll paper, as well as general cleaning.
Installing/Replacing the Ribbon Cassette:
Replacing the ribbon cassette is a straightforward process.
- First, the ribbon cassette cover needs to be opened. This is done by putting fingers under the catches on both sides and lifting the cover in the direction of the arrow.
- Before removing or installing a new ribbon, the knob on the ribbon cassette should be turned two or three times in the direction of the arrow. It is crucial to confirm the direction of the arrow on the cassette and turn the knob accordingly, as turning it in the opposite direction may damage the ribbon cassette.
- If a used ribbon cassette is present, it should be removed.
- To install a new ribbon cassette, it should be inserted so that the ribbon enters between the print head and platen. The cassette should then be pushed down until it clicks into place. Users should check that the ribbon is not wrinkled or creased.
- After installation, the knob on the ribbon cassette should again be turned two or three times in the direction of the arrow to ensure proper ribbon tension.
- Finally, the ribbon cassette cover is closed.
A critical caution is to avoid touching the print head during printing or immediately after, as it can be very hot. Users should wait for it to cool down before performing any maintenance. Only the specified ribbon cassette should be used to ensure proper operation and prevent damage.
Installing/Replacing the Roll Paper:
Replacing the roll paper is also designed to be quick and easy.
- The roll paper cover is opened by pulling the cover open lever. It is important not to open the roll paper cover during printing, as this could cause injury or damage the product.
- If there is a used roll paper core, it should be removed.
- The new roll paper is then inserted in the correct direction. For 2-ply roll paper, users should ensure that the top and bottom sheets are aligned at the paper exit.
- After inserting the paper, some paper should be pulled out, and then the roll paper cover is closed.
- The excess paper pulled out can then be cut.
Only the specified roll paper should be used.
Cleaning the Printer Case:
To maintain the printer's appearance and prevent dirt buildup, the printer case should be cleaned regularly.
- Before cleaning, the printer must be turned off.
- The dirt on the printer case can then be wiped off with a dry cloth or a damp cloth.
A significant caution is to never clean the printer with alcohol, benzine, thinner, or other such solvents, as these can damage or break the plastic and rubber parts of the device.
Troubleshooting:
The manual provides guidance for troubleshooting common issues indicated by the POWER LED and ERROR LED.
- POWER LED does not light: Users should check if the AC adapter is correctly connected.
- ERROR LED is on: This indicates an error. Users should check if the roll paper cover is correctly closed and if the PAPER OUT LED is on. If the PAPER OUT LED is on, it means the paper is out or incorrectly installed, and the roll paper needs to be replaced.
- ERROR LED is flashing: This indicates a paper jam or an issue with the auto cutter blade.
- If paper is jammed, users should remove it.
- If the auto cutter blade has locked up without returning to the standby position, users should return it to the correct position.
- If printing stops because the print head overheats, it will resume automatically when the print head cools down.
- For other cases, users should turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
Paper Jam Resolution:
If paper is jammed, users should never pull out the paper forcibly. Instead, they should open the roll paper cover, and then remove the jammed paper. If the auto cutter blade does not return to the standby position, users should follow these steps:
- Turn off the printer.
- Open the roll paper cover.
- Turn the knob in the direction of the arrow until a shaft is seen in the opening.
- Close the roll paper cover after resolving the jam.
The TM-U220-i is designed to be a reliable and easy-to-manage printer, ensuring smooth operation in various business settings.
