Overview

The Fender Hammertone Chorus is a compact, high-quality modulation effect pedal designed to add depth, dimension, and texture to a guitarist's or bassist's sound. This pedal offers a range of chorus effects, from subtle to striking, making it a versatile tool for any musician's arsenal.

Function Description:

The Hammertone Chorus pedal generates a chorus effect by doubling the input signal and subtly shifting its pitch and delay. This creates a rich, swirling sound that can enhance the sonic landscape of an instrument. The pedal features several controls and switches that allow users to fine-tune the chorus character to their preference.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Input Impedance: 500kΩ
  • Output Impedance: 470Ω
  • Power Supply: 9VDC regulated adapter, 5.5 x 2.1 mm barrel connector, center negative
  • Power Requirements: 100mA @ 9VDC
  • Dimensions: 2.44" x 4.4" x 2.2" (62mm x 111.8mm x 55.9mm)
  • Weight: 0.50 lbs (0.23kg)
  • Delay Times (Type Switch): 14mS, 23mS, 29mS, 35mS (for four voices)

Usage Features:

Controls:

  • DEPTH Control Knob: This knob adjusts the amount of pitch shift in the doubled sound, which is responsible for the chorus effect's characteristic quavering quality. A lower setting yields a more subtle chorus effect, while a higher setting produces a more pronounced effect.
  • RATE Control Knob: The Rate knob controls the modulation speed of the chorus effect. Turning it lower results in a slower and more gradual chorus, whereas turning it higher creates a faster, more vibrato-like effect.
  • LEVEL Control Knob: This control sets the overall level of the chorus effect. It adjusts the ratio between the original (dry) and doubled (wet) signals. A lower setting provides a less-pronounced chorus, while a higher setting delivers a heavier chorus effect.

Switches:

  • TYPE Switch: This three-position switch allows users to select between single-, two-, and four-voice choruses.
    • Single-voice mode (up position): Most closely resembles a traditional analog chorus.
    • Two-voice mode (middle position): Adds another voice with additional delay and modulation.
    • Four-voice mode (down position): Adds two more voices with further delay. The base delay times for the four delays are 14mS, 23mS, 29mS, and 35mS. The pedal automatically drops the level of other voices as chorus voices are added, ensuring that the overall volume remains consistent when changing modes.
  • TONE Switch: This two-position switch affects the low-end frequency response of the chorus effect.
    • Down position: Filters out low end, resulting in a cleaner chorus effect that may sit better in some mixes.
    • Up position: Delivers an unfiltered, thicker chorus sound.

Jacks and Indicators:

  • INPUT JACK: A high-impedance input designed for electric guitars, basses, acoustic guitars with pickup systems, keyboards, and other instruments.
  • OUTPUT JACK: A low-impedance output that connects to an amplifier or the next pedal in the signal chain.
  • DC POWER CONNECTOR: A standard center-negative 9VDC jack for connecting an appropriate power supply.
  • LED: Illuminates to indicate when the effect is active (on).
  • FOOTSWITCH: A stomp switch that turns the effect on and off.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: To clean the unit's exterior, unplug the AC power adapter and use only a damp cloth. Wait until the unit is completely dry before reconnecting it to power.
  • Internal Components: The device contains no user-serviceable parts inside. All servicing should be referred to qualified personnel.
  • Power Supply: Always use a safety agency certified, regulated power source (adapter) that is approved for use and compliant with local and national regulatory safety requirements.
  • Environmental Protection: The pedal is designed to comply with the European RoHS directive, meaning any parts supplied for use in the product must conform to its standards regarding hazardous substances. The manual includes a table detailing the presence of hazardous substances (Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyls, Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers) in various components, indicating compliance or exceptions based on global technological development limitations.

Safety Instructions:

  • To prevent damage, fire, or shock hazards, do not expose the unit or its AC power to rain or moisture.
  • Do not alter the AC plug of the connected power adapter.
  • Do not drip or splash liquids on the unit.
  • Unplug the AC power adapter before cleaning.
  • Amplifiers and loudspeaker systems, as well as ear/headphones, can produce very high sound pressure levels that may cause temporary or permanent hearing damage. Exercise caution when setting and adjusting volume levels.
  • The device complies with Part 15 of FCC Rules, ensuring it does not cause harmful interference and accepts any interference received.
