National Forest and Federal Lands

Metal detecting allowed only by special permit acquired from the federal government. Each area has a district office.

Corps of Engineers, Lakes, Shorelines and Lands

Permission granted on predisturbed sites; new lakes/lands require approval from main office.

State Parks and Lands

Some parks open, some not. Always check with the park ranger before use.

Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Lands

Some areas open, some not. Always check with the district office.

City or County Park Lands

Most open unless notice given by sign or city ordinance. Check city's Parks and Recreation Dept.

Public School Grounds

Most open unless notice given by sign, ordinance, or official. Always check with the school office.

Privately Owned Lands (Private Property)

Permission required, preferably in writing.

Historically Marked Lands or Sites

Metal detecting is not allowed. Do not even think about it.
