Overview

The FÖRST XR8 TRAXION is a tracked wood chipper designed for reducing wood material.

Function Description:

The chipper is equipped with an engine PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) system that manages the engine, feed, and all safety features. It utilizes a "No Stress" function to ensure optimal cutting conditions, maximizing throughput while minimizing jams and blockages. The feed mechanism consists of high-powered hydraulic motors driving sharp-toothed rollers that feed material into the cutting blades. Woodchip and debris are ejected with considerable force from the chute, capable of traveling up to 10m.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Max. material diameter: 203mm
  • Max. material processing: 5.5 tonnes/hour
  • Engine: Doosan D18, 42KW (56hp), Water Cooled
  • Fuel Capacity: 35 litres
  • Hydraulic Oil Capacity: 35 litres
  • Fuel type: Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel
  • Overall Weight: 2250kg
  • Roller Feed: Twin hydraulic motors
  • Sound pressure level (LpA) at operator's ear: 111.7dB(A)
  • Peak C-weighted instantaneous sound pressure (LCpeak): 136.7dB(C)
  • Guaranteed sound power level: 117dB(A)
  • Track dimensions (retracted): Width 1473mm, Height 333mm (from ground to track base)
  • Track dimensions (extended): Width 2020mm, Height 655mm (from ground to track base)
  • Track dimensions (inclined): Width 1747mm, Height 471mm (from ground to track base), 12° incline.

Usage Features:

  • Starting the Chipper: Turn the ignition key to pre-heat, wait for the display to indicate 'start engine', then turn the key to crank the engine. Allow the engine to run for 30 seconds at idle before increasing revs to full.
  • Feeding Material: Tap the green button once to feed material into the chipper.
  • Reversing Feed: Tap the orange button once for a momentary reverse, or twice for continuous reverse.
  • Stopping the Chipper: Push the E-Stop button or the red stop bar. Reduce revs to idle, switch off ignition, and remove the key.
  • Feed Speed Adjustment: A dial allows adjustment of the feed speed from 0 (minimum) to 10 (maximum) to suit the material being chipped. For Leylandii or leafy material, a feed roller speed of 4.5 is recommended.
  • Track Control and Driving: Driving controls are located on the engine cover and operated from the fold-down footplate. Two outer levers control track rotation direction and speed, allowing for forward/reverse movement and steering by varying the speed of each track.
  • Track Extensions: The chipper features extendable tracks, allowing for a wider stance for increased stability or a narrower stance for transport/access.
  • Lifting: A dedicated lifting eye is provided for securely lifting the chipper. A correctly rated safety shackle must be used, and the lifting eye should be inspected before each use.
  • Safety Features: Includes E-Stop buttons, a stop bar, feed touch sensors, and a safety curtain. The chipper will not start without the discharge chute or guards correctly and securely fitted. An exclusion zone of 10m around the chipper is recommended during operation.

Maintenance Features:

  • Service Warnings: The control panel displays service warnings at specific intervals:
    • First 20 Hour Warning: "Change Hydraulic Oil Filter"
    • Every 20 Hour Warning: "Blade and Machine check required see manual"
    • 50 Hour Service Warning: "1st Full Service recommended"
    • Every 200 Hour Warning: "Full Service recommended"
  • Routine Checks (Daily/Every 8 Hrs): Check engine oil level, debris screen, hydraulic oil level, drive belts, and grease central point on control panel.
  • Regular Checks (Every 20 Hrs): Change hydraulic filter cartridge, check brake adjustment (wheeled only), check flywheel shut bearings, check cutting blade & anvil condition, check feed roller tension springs.
  • Extended Checks (Every 50 Hrs/Weekly): Check fuel hoses and clamp bands, clean air filter element, check fuel filter, check battery electrolyte level, check fan belt tension, check radiator hoses & clamp bands. Re-sharpen feed rollers as required.
  • Major Checks (Every 200 Hrs/Monthly): Replace oil filter, check air intake hose, check & recharge battery, replace fuel filter cartridge, change feed roller bearings on motor side.
  • Blade Changing: Requires specific steps including disconnecting battery, removing bolts, cleaning debris, and carefully handling sharp blades. Shims are used for blade adjustment.
  • Blade Sharpening: Blades must be kept sharp. Minimum safe blade size after sharpening is 80mm to 60mm. Blade shims are available in various thicknesses for adjustment. The complete blade fastener set must be replaced every time blades are changed and torqued to 310 Nm.
  • Hydraulic Oil Filter: The filter is accessed via the left side panel. Regular cleaning and replacement of the filter element are necessary.
  • Oils, Fluids, and Lubricants:
    • Engine Oil: HD SAE 10w40 E9 (consult Doosan engine operator's manual for quantities).
    • Hydraulic Oil: ISO VG 46 (checked and topped up to RED LINE on sight glass when cold and on a level surface).
    • Anti-Freeze: Mono-ethylene Glycol at a 50% mix ratio (consult Doosan engine operator's manual for quantities).
    • Grease: Lithium EP2 General Purpose (greasing points on control panel, 2 pumps per grease nipple per week is sufficient).
  • Drive Belt Tension: Flywheel V belts must be checked for tension and condition. Adjustment involves slackening clamp nuts, turning adjuster nuts to achieve 4.5Kg force at the belt longest centre span (approximately 6mm deflection by firmly gripping belt between finger and thumb and twisting).
  • Battery Maintenance: Includes safety information, storage, initial operation, removal, and charging instructions.
  • Track Tension: The XR8 undercarriage track tension should be 200 bar, adjusted with a grease gun via the nipple under the oval side panel.
