Overview

This document describes the MIB-4 video interface, a device designed to expand the multimedia capabilities of compatible Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche, Skoda, and VW vehicles equipped with MMI Navigation Plus, MIB, MIB2, MQB High, Discovery Pro, or Standard/Composition Media head units.

Function Description

The MIB-4 video interface allows for the integration of aftermarket video sources into the vehicle's factory infotainment system. Its primary function is to enable the display of video from external devices such as front cameras, rear-view cameras, and AV sources on the vehicle's original monitor. The interface supports automatic switching to the rear-view camera input when reverse gear is engaged, and it offers manual switching between various video inputs using either the vehicle's OEM buttons or an external keypad.

The device is designed to be compatible with a wide range of vehicles and monitor sizes, providing a flexible solution for multimedia upgrades. It includes features for adjusting picture settings (contrast, brightness, saturation, position) via an On-Screen Display (OSD) menu, ensuring optimal video quality for different monitor types and user preferences. The interface also incorporates a CAN-bus box, which facilitates communication with the vehicle's system for functions like reverse gear detection and OEM button control.

Usage Features

Installation and Configuration: The MIB-4 interface requires careful installation, involving connections to the vehicle's head unit, power supply, and video sources. Dip switches on the interface allow for customization of its operation:

  • Dip switches 1-3 (black): Enable/disable video inputs (CVBS Video 1, CVBS Video 2, CVBS Video 3). Only enabled inputs are accessible when switching sources.
  • Dip switch 4 (black): Vehicle-specific setting. ON for Audi TT vehicles, OFF for all others.
  • Dip switch 5 (black): Rear-view camera setting. OFF for factory LVDS picture with reverse gear, ON for interface's rear-view camera input.
  • Dip switches 6-8 (black): Monitor selection. These customize video settings for different monitor types and sizes. Users may need to try various combinations to achieve the best picture quality.
  • Dip switches 1-4 (red): CAN function settings. These are specific to Porsche with PCM 4.0. For all other vehicles, they must be set to OFF.

Operating the Interface:

  • Switching video sources: Can be done using OEM buttons (e.g., NAV button) or an external keypad. A longer press (approx. 2.5 seconds) may be required for OEM button switching.
  • On-Screen Display (OSD): The interface features an OSD menu accessible via MENU, DOWN, and UP buttons. This menu allows adjustment of picture settings such as Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, Position H/V, and UI-CNTRL (guide lines ON/OFF).
  • Rear-view camera activation: The interface automatically switches to the rear-view camera input when reverse gear is engaged, provided dip switch 5 is set to ON. If set to OFF, it displays the factory LVDS picture.
  • Video-in-motion: The device supports video-in-motion for connected video sources, allowing passengers to view content while the vehicle is moving.

Maintenance Features

Software Updates: The manufacturer offers free software updates for the interface for up to one year after purchase. To receive an update, the interface must be sent to the manufacturer at the owner's cost. Reinstallation and other related expenditures are not refunded. This ensures the device remains compatible with potential changes or updates in the vehicle's software.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive FAQ section to assist users in diagnosing and resolving common issues. This includes solutions for:

  • No picture/black picture: Checking connections, power supply to CAN-bus box and video-interface, correct CAN-bus connection, and activated video inputs.
  • Inserted picture wrong size/position/distorted: Adjusting monitor settings (dips 7 and 8), ensuring video sources output PAL or NTSC, and using the OSD menu for picture adjustments.
  • Camera input issues: Checking camera power supply (should not be taken directly from reverse gear lamp), adjusting camera input picture settings in AV2 mode, and ensuring PDC function is OFF in the OSD if not desired.
  • Switching issues: Checking if the CAN-bus interface supports OEM button switching, ensuring a long enough press for OEM buttons, and verifying SW-version for external keypad support.
  • Interface switches video-sources by itself: Cutting and isolating specific wires (grey and white wires of the 6pin to 8pin cable) to resolve unintended switching.

Legal Information: The manual emphasizes that watching moving pictures while driving is prohibited due to distraction risks. The manufacturer disclaims liability for material damage or personal injury resulting from installation or operation. The product should primarily be used in an unmoved vehicle or for displaying fixed menus or rear-view camera video while moving.
