Do you have a question about the GILGEN FD 20-F and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the Gilgen FD 20-F swing door drive mechanism, designed for door leaf systems supplied by others, with fire protection rating. It functions as an automatic opening and closing system for swing doors.

Function Description

The FD 20-F is a swing door drive mechanism that enables automatic opening and closing of swing doors. It is specifically designed for use with door leaf systems provided by other manufacturers and carries a fire protection rating. The mechanism compensates the closing force of the spring, and for the user, the door behaves like a normal door without drive mechanism. The operating characteristics of the door can be determined via the program selector, which allows for various operating modes.

In Standard application, the opening and closing movements of the door leaf are motorized, and automatic opening is performed via opening elements. The door automatically closes upon reaching the programmed hold-open time. If the door is used in the event of a fire alarm, it closes from any position by means of spring power, and the motor attenuation ensures a controlled closing.

In Inverse application, the FD 20-F is suitable for inverse operation, where the door leaf can be separately programmed for each drive mechanism. This is useful for smoke extraction from buildings (RWA = smoke and heat exhaust vent solution) as well as for escape and rescue ways. In such an application, the door leaf is reliably opened. Similar to the standard application, the opening and closing movements are motorized, and automatic opening is performed via opening elements, with automatic closing upon reaching the programmed hold-open time. In the event of a smoke alarm, the door leaf opens from any position by means of spring power, and the motor attenuation ensures a controlled opening. An emergency power supply system is therefore not necessary. It's important to note that the inverse function (spring-powered opening) must not be used on hold-open devices or in fire-protection sections, as this function is contrary to the "self-closing" property required by standards.

The Automatic closing sequence control feature is for 2 leaves installations, where two separate FD 20-F swing door drive mechanisms with fire protection rating are used and connected via the CAN bus system. This allows for installation requirements of the mechanical closing sequence regulator FD 20-ISR.

Usage Features

The FD 20-F is controlled via a D-BEDIX (option), a key-operated switch with a screened two-core communication cable. The D-BEDIX allows for easy programming and displays operating modes and possible errors.

The Main switch (A) enables or disables the power supply to the drive mechanism. The door leaf closes from any position by means of spring power (unless the door leaf has not been locked). Motor attenuation ensures controlled closing.

The Program selector (B) enables various operating modes:

  • AUTOMATIC: Automatic opening via inside/outside opening elements + Key. Automatic closing after the adjustable hold-open time.
  • NIGHT: Door leaf can only be opened via the key-operated switch outside.
  • OPEN: Door leaf automatically opens and remains in the OPEN position.
  • MANUAL: Drive mechanism and control elements are switched off. Door leaf can be manually opened. Door leaf closes by spring power from any position (unless the door leaf has not been locked).
  • EXIT: Door leaf can only be opened via inside opening elements and Key.
  • Teach-in procedure (Teach): Completely closes the door leaf. Holding MANUAL and EXIT keys simultaneously for at least 5 seconds deletes pending errors and initiates a teach-in procedure.

The D-BEDIX display shows operating mode symbols, possible operating modes, and a selection frame for active and preselected operating modes. It also indicates when a control element with higher priority (e.g., key-operated switch) determines the operating mode.

The Menu level allows access to various settings:

  • PARAMETER: Setting the motional parameters.
  • CONFIG: Setting the functionalities.
  • DOUBLE DOOR: Setting the closing sequence and interlock function.
  • DIAGNOSTICS: Diagnostic tool.
  • ERROR ACTIVE: Active pending errors.
  • ERROR HISTORY: Formerly active errors.
  • REINIT: Carrying out a re-initialization.
  • BLOCK/UNBLOC: Lock/unlock keys.
  • TEACH: Initiates a teach-in procedure, ensuring the door leaf is completely closed.

Settings can be changed by selecting the desired symbol with arrow keys and confirming with the OK key. The keylock can be enabled or disabled through the menu.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the safe and reliable operation of the FD 20-F.

  • General Remarks: The present operator manual contains all necessary information for operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Safety Notices: Users are warned about involving danger to life and limb, situations where material could be damaged or the function impaired, and hints that facilitate the work.
  • Safety Regulations: The installation has been calculated, designed, and manufactured based on the latest state of the art technology and recognized safety-relevant rules and regulations. It may only be operated if it is in perfect condition, taking into account modifications of the present manual. Any use beyond the defined application limits is inadmissible. The installation must be operated and maintained in such condition that the safety is guaranteed at all times. An integral part of this condition is the appropriate use, compliance with the operating conditions prescribed by the manufacturer, as well as the regular service (maintenance/checking).
  • Service:
    • Switching off: Select the operating mode MANUAL or switch off the main switch.
    • Care: Clean the floor within the area of the door leaf. Clean the outside of the drive mechanism covering with a moistened rag. Do not use running water or high-pressure machines for cleaning the drive mechanism. Do not use any metal brushes or chemical products for cleaning the installation.
    • Checking: The installation must be checked at regular intervals, at least every 2 months (checking of the different elements as far as these are included in the installation). When the door leaf is moved by hand, listen for unusual grinding or screeching noises. Check the function, free access to, and identification of the emergency stop button. Check the correct fastening of the drive mechanism covering.
    • Maintenance/checking carried out by the after-sales service: In order to guarantee the safety of the users at all times, the installation must be checked with regard to its safe condition before the first commissioning and during normal operation, at least once a year, by an expert. The correct maintenance/checking must be confirmed by entering the date and signature into the control booklet. In addition, fire protection installations need to be checked once a year by an authorized specialist. The correct checking must be confirmed by entering the date and signature to the maintenance control booklet for fixing devices. It is recommended to conclude a maintenance contract with the manufacturer of the installation, respectively with his authorized distribution partner.
  • Troubleshooting: In the event of an error, the display shows the active error number. An error list is provided for troubleshooting. If an error cannot be eliminated, contact the after-sales service. Before carrying out a Reset, note the error number. Upon selection and confirmation by means of the OK key, the drive mechanism automatically re-adjusts itself.
  • Irregular functioning without error no.: A table is provided to diagnose and eliminate malfunctions without error numbers, such as the drive mechanism not functioning, door not opening, or door not closing.
  • Shut-down: No particular measures are needed for de-commissioning the installation. If the swing door drive mechanism with fire protection rating will not be used during at least 1 month, it is recommended to pull out the mains plug. For taking the installation back into operation, all you have to do is to plug in the mains cable and select the operating mode. If the swing door drive mechanism with fire protection rating has been out of operation for more than 3 months, it is recommended to have the re-commissioning carried out by your after-sales service.
  • Disposal of the installation: An ecologically acceptable disposal of the installation is ensured if the different materials are separated and recycled. No particular measures are required for the protection of the environment. It is advised to entrust after-sales specialists with the dismantling and disposal.
