Important Safety Instructions
The Basement Watchdog Utility Pumps can be used in a variety of
areas including wet basements, window wells, pool covers, boats
or other areas that can collect water.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS. This manual contains important SAFETY WARNINGS and
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS for Basement Watchdog Utility Pumps. You will need to refer
to it before attempting any installation or maintenance.
ALWAYS keep these instructions with the unit so that they will be easily accessible.
Failure to read and follow these warnings and instructions could result in property
damage, serious injury or death.
ALWAYS disconnect the pump from the power source before servicing or making
adjustments.
NEVER handle the pump or motor with wet hands or when standing on a wet or damp
surface while the pump is plugged into the power source.
MAKE SURE THERE IS A PROPERLY GROUNDED RECEPTACLE AVAILABLE. This pump is
wired with a 3-prong grounded plug. To reduce the risk of electric shock, be certain that
it is only connected to a properly grounded, 3-prong receptacle with GFCI (ground fault
circuit interrupter). If you have a 2- prong receptacle, have a licensed electrician replace
it with a 3-prong receptacle according to local codes and ordinances.
ALWAYS plug the pump directly into a properly grounded 3-prong receptacle with GFCI
(ground fault circuit interrupter). The electrical outlet should be within the length of the
pump’s power cord, and at least 4 feet above the floor level to minimize potential hazards
from flood conditions.
NEVER use a receptacle that has been damaged, submerged in or exposed to water.
NEVER bypass grounding wires or remove the ground prong from the plug.
DO protect the electrical cord from sharp objects, hot surfaces, oil, and chemicals. Avoid
kinking the cord.
MAKE SURE the supply circuit has a fuse or circuit breaker rated to handle the power
requirements noted on the nameplate of the pump.
DO NOT use the power cord or strain relief to carry the pump. Use the pump handle.
DO NOT suspend the pump by the power cord or hose.
DO NOT operate the pump if it has been damaged in any way.
DO NOT use utility pumps in areas handling raw sewage, hazardous or flammable liquids
or vapors.
DO NOT use utility pumps as a replacement for a sump pump or in a permanent installation
such as fountains, waterfalls or ponds. Utility pumps must be monitored when in use.
DO NOT use in ponds or pools that contain fish or other living animals as the motor
contains cooling oil.
DO NOT run dry.
DO NOT disassemble the pump. When service is required, contact Glentronics technical
support at 800-991-0466, option 3. Return the product to the manufacturer for any repairs

Overview

The Basement Watchdog Utility Pump is a versatile device designed to remove water from various areas, including wet basements, window wells, pool covers, and boats. It is available in two models: the BWU033PAS (Automatic) and the BWU033P (Manual).

Function Description

The primary function of the Basement Watchdog Utility Pump is to efficiently transfer water from one location to another. The automatic model (BWU033PAS) features a built-in switch that activates the pump when water reaches 1-3/4 inches and deactivates it when the water level drops to 1/4 inch. The manual model (BWU033P) runs continuously when plugged into a power source and must be unplugged to turn off. Both models are equipped with a built-in air relief valve, which is crucial for preventing air locks within the pump and ensuring continuous operation. This valve may release some water during operation, which is normal. The pump is designed for temporary use and should be monitored when in operation, not as a permanent replacement for a sump pump or in installations like fountains or ponds.

Important Technical Specifications

The pump operates on a 115V AC +/- 5% and 60 Hz power supply.

  • GPM @ 0' with 1-1/4" hose: 31 gallons per minute (GPM) for both models.
  • GPM @ 0' garden hose: 24 GPM for both models.
  • Housing material: Plastic for both models.
  • Switch type: Automatic for BWU033PAS, Manual (none) for BWU033P.
  • Impeller material: Nylon/Engineered polymer for both models.
  • Outlet diameter: 1" NPYA for both models.
  • Cord length: 10 feet for both models.
  • Amps: 2.5 for both models.
  • Motor type: PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) for both models.
  • Bearings: Upper & lower ball bearings for both models.
  • Thermal protection: Yes for both models, safeguarding against overheating.
  • Fasteners: SS (Stainless Steel) for durability.
  • Min. depth pump turns on (BWU033PAS): 1-3/4 inches.
  • Depth pump turns off (BWU033PAS): 1/4 inch.

Usage Features

The pump comes with a 45-degree adapter fitting, which allows for connection to either a standard garden hose or a 1-1/4 inch flexible sump pump discharge hose. A washer is included with the adapter to ensure a snug, leak-free fit. For optimal performance, the pump should always be placed on a flat surface in the lowest area and remain vertical during use. It is important to ensure that the connected hose is not twisted or kinked, as this will restrict water flow and reduce the pump's capacity. The pump should not be used with more than 50 feet of hose, as this will significantly decrease its capacity.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always disconnect the pump from the power source before any servicing or adjustments.
  • Never handle the pump or motor with wet hands or while standing on a wet surface when it is plugged in.
  • The pump must be connected to a properly grounded, 3-prong GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) receptacle. If a 2-prong receptacle is present, it must be replaced by a licensed electrician with a 3-prong GFCI receptacle.
  • The electrical outlet should be within the length of the pump's power cord and at least 4 feet above floor level to minimize flood-related hazards.
  • Never use a damaged, submerged, or water-exposed receptacle.
  • Do not bypass grounding wires or remove the ground prong from the plug.
  • Protect the electrical cord from sharp objects, hot surfaces, oil, and chemicals, and avoid kinking it.
  • Ensure the supply circuit has a fuse or circuit breaker rated to handle the pump's power requirements.
  • Do not use the power cord or strain relief to carry the pump; always use the pump handle.
  • Do not suspend the pump by the power cord or hose.
  • Do not operate a damaged pump.
  • Do not use utility pumps in areas handling raw sewage, hazardous or flammable liquids or vapors.
  • Do not use in ponds or pools containing fish or other living animals, as the motor contains cooling oil.
  • Do not run the pump dry.
  • Do not disassemble the pump; contact Glentronics technical support for service.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and efficient operation of the pump.

  • Disconnect power: Always disconnect the pump from the power source before performing any maintenance.
  • Clean strainer: Remove all debris from the pump strainer.
  • Clean switch: Remove all debris from the pump switch (for automatic model).
  • Clean operating area: Remove all debris from the area where the pump is operating.
  • Clean air relief valve: Remove all debris around the air relief valve to ensure it functions correctly and prevents air locks.

Warranty Information

Glentronics, Inc. provides a limited warranty for its pumps, switches, and control unit products, guaranteeing them to be free from defective materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase when used as a utility pump. To obtain warranty service, the defective product must be returned to Glentronics, Inc., postage prepaid, with the original bill of sale or receipt. The company will either repair or replace the product at its option.
