Overview

The Goodman AEPF Multi-Position, Variable-Speed Air Handler is a versatile indoor unit designed for residential and light commercial heating and cooling applications, compatible with both R-410A and R-22 refrigerants. It is available in capacities ranging from 1.5 to 5 tons.

Function Description:

The AEPF air handler is designed to provide consistent airflow and improved humidity control across various operating conditions. It features a variable-speed motor that maintains constant CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) regardless of static pressure in the duct system, ensuring optimal performance and comfort. The unit offers low CFM for efficient fan-only operation, contributing to energy savings. It is multi-position capable, allowing for upflow, downflow, or horizontal installation, which provides flexibility in system design and placement. The air handler is compatible with heat pumps and variable-capacity cooling applications, making it suitable for a wide range of HVAC systems. Its pre-programmed blower motor operates at four distinct airflow levels for Cooling, Heat Pump heating, Backup heating (Electric Heating), and Backup + Heat Pump heating modes, each with four CFM levels adjustable via dipswitches.

Important Technical Specifications:

Nominal Ratings:

  • Cooling (BTU/h): Ranges from 18,000-30,000 (AEPF183016) up to 42,000-60,000 (AEPF426016).
  • CFM (High/Low): Varies by model, e.g., 1,200/600 for AEPF183016, and 2,000/1,200 for AEPF426016.

Blower:

  • Diameter: 9½" (AEPF183016) or 10%" (other models).
  • Width: 8" (AEPF183016) or 10%" (other models).
  • Coil Drain Connection FPT: ¾" for all models.

Service Valve:

  • Liquid Line: ⅜" for all models.
  • Suction Line: ¾" (AEPF183016) or ⅞" (other models).

Electrical Data:

  • Voltage: 208/240 V, 1 Phase, 60 Hz for all models.
  • Electric Heat Capacity (kW): Varies by model, e.g., 5, 8, 10 kW (AEPF183016) up to 10, 15, 20, 21 kW (AEPF426016).
  • Min Circuit Ampacity: Ranges from 2.5/2.5 A (AEPF183016) to 7.8/7.8 A (AEPF426016).
  • Max. Overcurrent Device (amps): 15/15 A for all models.
  • Minimum VAC: 197 V for all models.
  • Maximum VAC: 253 V for all models.

Blower Motor:

  • FLA: Ranges from 2.0 A (AEPF183016) to 6.2 A (AEPF426016).
  • HP: ½ HP (AEPF183016) or ¾ HP (other models).

Ship Weight (LBS): Ranges from 125 lbs (AEPF183016) to 195 lbs (AEPF426016).

Dimensions:

The unit's dimensions vary by model, with heights ranging from 46¾" to 53¾", widths from 22" to 24", and depths from 17½" to 20".

Usage Features:

  • Variable-Speed Motor: Provides constant CFM over a wide range of static pressure conditions, independent of the duct system, and offers low CFM for efficient fan-only operation.
  • Adjustable Airflow Settings: Up to 14 adjustable airflow settings allow optimization of the system's CFM for each individual mode of operation.
  • Improved Humidity Control: Enhances comfort by actively managing humidity levels.
  • Multi-Position Installation: Can be installed in upflow, downflow, or horizontal configurations, offering installation flexibility.
  • Built-in Coil: Features horizontal, vertical, and downflow drain pans with secondary drain connections for effective condensate management.
  • Factory-Sealed Cabinet: Achieves a leakage rate of 2% or less at 1.0” water gauge external duct static pressure, with or without field-installed filter kits, complying with the 2001 Florida Building Code.
  • Dipswitch Adjustments: The AEPF air handler blower motor has pre-programmed airflow levels for Cooling, Heat Pump heating, Backup heating (Electric Heating), and Backup + Heat Pump heating modes. Each mode has four levels to deliver different CFM, which can be adjusted by flipping dipswitches. Dipswitches 1 and 2 control Electric Heat Mode, Dipswitch 4 controls Thermostat Mode (single-stage or two-stage operation), Dipswitches 5 and 6 control Cooling/Heat Pump Mode based on outdoor unit capacity, and Dipswitches 7 and 8 control Trim CFM Adjust Mode (increasing or decreasing airflow by 10% or 15%).
  • Compatibility: Compatible with heat pumps and variable-capacity cooling applications.
  • Expansion Device: Includes a flowrater expansion device for cooling and heat pump applications. Optional expansion valve kits are available for both R-22 and R-410A systems, including non-bleed and 20% bleed valve types, tailored to specific outdoor unit tonnage.

Maintenance Features:

  • Built-in Filter Rack: Designed for a 1" filter (filter not included), simplifying filter replacement.
  • Low-Voltage Cabinet Connections: Control circuit arranged to permit staging.
  • Power Supply: Located on top for easy access; low-voltage entry can be on top or side.
  • Cabinet: Fully insulated, painted steel cabinet with an attractive Architectural Gray finish.
  • Drain Pan Insulation Kits: Available for both downflow and horizontal applications to prevent sweating and improve efficiency.
  • Single Point Kit (SPW-01): Compatible with HKR-15C, HKR-20C, and HKR-21C heat kits, simplifying electrical connections.
  • Filters: Specific filter numbers (FIL 18-32, FIL-36-42, FIL 48-61) are listed for different AEPF models, requiring one filter per unit.
  • Warranty: Comes with a 10-Year Parts Limited Warranty, requiring online registration within 60 days of installation (not required in California or Québec). GoodCare Extended Service Plan is also available.
  • Wiring Diagram: Comprehensive wiring diagrams are provided for various configurations, including different numbers of heater element rows, and connections for thermostats and outdoor units. Important notes include instructions for heat pump applications, two-stage electric heat, outdoor thermostat operation, single-stage cooling, humidistat use, transformer wiring, and low voltage connections.
  • Safety: High voltage warning emphasizes disconnecting all power before servicing to prevent property damage, personal injury, or death.
