Attach voltmeter
to negative and
positive posts of
battery.
Does voltmeter
read 12.2 volts
or above?
Test and
recharge battery.
Start engine and
observe battery
voltage at full
throttle.
Is voltage at
battery between
13 and 14.7
volts?
Unplug diode
wire at engine.
Using AC
voltmeter
measure AC
voltage output
from engine
connector to
ground.
Does AC voltage
measure 28
volts* or more at
full throttle?

Notes:
1. Voltage tests are performed
with a DC/AC voltmeter.
2. Tests are performed after
regulator fuse is checked.
3. AC voltage tests are performed
with engine at 3600 rpm.

(Briggs & Stratton Twin-II engine)
BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM
*voltage may vary depending upon RPM.
**a properly functioning diode will show continuity in one
direction only. If the diode does not show continuity in either
direction, diode is open. Replace diode wire. If diode shows
continuity in both directions it is shorted. Replace diode wire.
