Checking for Bent Mower Blades
1. Park unit safely. See Using the Parking
Brake on page 13.
NOTE: Mower deck with side discharge
removed used for illustration.
2. Measure distance (A) between blade tip
and flat ground surface.
3. Rotate blade 180° and measure
distance between other blade tip and flat
ground surface.
4. Install new blade if the difference
between the two measurements is more
than 1/8-in. (3 mm).
5. Repeat for all blades.
REPLACING MOWER BLADES
Removing Mower Blades
1. Park unit safely. See Using the Parking
Brake on page 13.
2. Turn the engine off. Remove the ignition
key. Remove the ignition wire from the
spark plugs.
3. Secure blade with a wooden block to
prevent blade rotation.
4. Remove the bolts, blades and spacers
from the spindle shafts.
Replacing Mower Blades
1. Install the spacers (A), blades (B) and
bolts (C) on the spindle shafts.
2. Secure blades with a wooden block to
prevent blade rotation.
3. Tighten blade bolts to a torque of 120
lbf-ft (163 N•m).
4. Replace ignition wires on spark plugs.
Sharpen Blades
• Sharpen blades with grinder, hand file,
or electric blade sharpener.
• Keep original bevel (A) when grinding.
• Blade should have 1/64-in. (0.40 mm)
cutting edge (B) or less.
• Balance blades before installing.
NOTE: If mower is used under sandy soil
conditions, replace mower blades when air
lifts become eroded through at ends
(figure 34).
CAUTION: Avoid injury! Mower
blades are sharp. Always wear
gloves when handling mower blades
or working near blades.
Only replace blades. Never
straighten or weld them.
WARNING: Sharp edges can cut.
Moving parts can cut off fingers or a
hand. Wrap blade(s), wear sturdy
gloves and use extreme caution
when servicing. On multi-blade
mowers, rotation of one blade will
cause all blades to rotate.
CAUTION: Avoid injury! Mower
blades are dangerous!
• Always wear gloves while
working on blades.
• Always wear safety eye
protection when grinding.
