Overview

The Grizzl-E Duo is an Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) designed for charging plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) at home. It is a dual charging station solution built upon the proven Grizzl-E design, offering intelligent power-sharing capabilities to simultaneously provide up to 10kW of power to two vehicles.

Function Description

The primary function of the Grizzl-E Duo is to provide Level 2 AC charging for electric vehicles. It features two charging connectors, allowing for the simultaneous charging of two vehicles. The intelligent power-sharing capability ensures efficient distribution of available current between the connected vehicles. When one vehicle is connected, the Grizzl-E Duo can provide up to 40A (9.6kW) of power. If two vehicles are connected and drawing maximum power, the unit will supply 50% of the available current to each vehicle.

The charging station's current output is adjustable to support various circuit ratings, including 50A, 40A, 30A, or 20A dedicated circuits. This flexibility allows users to configure the charger to match their home's electrical infrastructure. The default factory setting for maximum current output is 40A (9.6kW), suitable for a 50A circuit. The unit requires a dedicated single-phase 208-240VAC, 50/60 Hz circuit with a double-pole branch breaker. It includes built-in GFCI protection, eliminating the need for additional downstream GFCI. The Grizzl-E Duo can be connected via a standard NEMA 14-50 receptacle or hardwired for a permanent installation.

Usage Features

The Grizzl-E Duo is designed for ease of use and durability. It comes exclusively with two 24ft Premium output cables, providing ample reach for most charging scenarios. The device boasts an extreme-duty, rigid, and compact design, featuring a robust and heavy-duty aluminum cast case with an airtight enclosure suitable for both indoor and outdoor use (NEMA 4 rated). It is designed to withstand various elements and provide maximum operational life.

Installation is straightforward, with options for wall or pedestal mounting. The package includes a mounting bracket, security pin, and all necessary screws and anchors for installation. The mounting bracket is designed to be secured to a sturdy support like a wood stud or solid concrete wall, not directly to stucco, drywall, or wallboard. The unit should be mounted between 24 inches (0.6 m) and 48 inches (1.2 m) from the ground, with the NEMA outlet (if used) located no less than 20-26 inches from the ground.

The charging process is simple:

  1. Connect and Charge: Insert one of the charging connectors into the EV, ensuring it is fully seated and locked. The charging session will begin automatically. When a second vehicle is connected, the Grizzl-E Duo will recognize it and automatically adjust the available current for dual charging.
  2. Stop Charging: Press the connector button and remove the Charger Connector from the EV. The charging session terminates immediately upon button depression. Return the connector to the holster after use.

The Grizzl-E Duo features LED charge status indicators (Power/Ready, Charging, Fault) to provide visual feedback on the charging status. An alternating LED indicator light specifically for the Duo model shows the status of both primary and secondary chargers. Solid or slow flashing indicates the primary charger's status, a second white LED indicates a transition between primary and secondary, and modulating or rapid flashing indicates the secondary charger's status.

The unit also includes a DIP switch for adjusting the maximum current output, allowing users to configure the charger to match their circuit capacity. This adjustment requires the unit to be unplugged and the front cover removed.

For cable management, the Grizzl-E Duo comes with an EasyEvPlug™ Holster (or Tesla EasyEVPlug™ Holster) which offers an innovative solution to protect the plug and manage the cord. Key features of the holster include:

  • No need to aim: Allows for flawless plug insertion even in the dark.
  • Convenient location: Ensures the EV holster is always in an accessible spot.
  • Space-saving: Features a special angle for less wall clearance.
  • Integrated cable management: Can hold up to 25 feet of cable. The holster can be installed at any location near the charging station by fastening Phillips head screws through its back holes, with anchors recommended for drywall installation.

Maintenance Features

The Grizzl-E Duo is designed for minimal maintenance. All United Chargers products do not require routine maintenance; however, periodic inspections are recommended to ensure all parts remain in good working order and free from damage.

For cleaning the exterior, which is waterproof and dustproof (NEMA 4 Outdoor Rated), it is recommended to use an automotive-grade soft cleaning cloth with soap and water to remove accumulated dirt and dust. Cleaning solvents should not be used on any product components. While the enclosure is water-resistant, submerging the unit in water is not recommended.

Important safety and care guidelines include:

  • Always ensure the charging connector is placed back in the holster after charging to prevent damage.
  • The power cable should be stored on the charging station after use to avoid damage.
  • If the power cable or charging connector is damaged, the charging station supply circuit breaker should be turned off, the station should not be used, and United Chargers Customer Support should be contacted for replacement parts.
  • When moving or lifting the unit, always grasp and carry it by the charging station body, never by the electrical cables, as improper handling can cause damage.

The device also has a fault indicator system using red LED flashes, with different numbers of flashes corresponding to specific errors (e.g., lost ground, GFCI high/low, relay stuck, high temperature, pilot state errors, diode error, no connection with secondary module, application error). In the event of a fault, a reset procedure is recommended: unplug the charging connector from the EV, turn off the power to the charging station at the circuit breaker for 1-2 minutes, then switch the breaker back on. If the fault light persists, United Chargers should be contacted.

The Grizzl-E Duo comes with a 3-year manufacturer's warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty does not cover misuse, abuse, alteration, normal wear and tear of the cable, or plugs exposed to snow or water for prolonged periods. United Chargers assumes no liability for installation or labor costs associated with the warranty.
