Overview

The Guardian Fall Protection Ridge-It Anchor is a fall protection anchorage connector designed for use in personal fall arrest and restraint systems. It is available in three models: 00500 (9-3/4" with 1 D-ring), 00510 (18" with 2 D-rings), and 00515 (18" Ridge-It Tile Anchor with 1 D-ring).

Function Description:

The primary function of the Ridge-It Anchor is to provide a secure attachment point for personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) and restraint systems, preventing workers from falling or limiting their fall distance. It is designed for permanent installation applications on various roof types, including those with wood or metal substrates. The anchor is installed perpendicular to the roof peak and parallel with the truss or support beam, with the D-ring(s) remaining uncovered for connection.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Worker Capacity Range: 130-420 lbs (including all clothing, tools, and equipment).
  • Materials: Stainless steel, zinc-plated steel, and butyl.
  • Fasteners:
    • Models #00500 and #00510: 8 provided 3", 16d stainless steel spiral nails.
    • Model #00515: 12 provided 3", 16d stainless steel spiral nails.
    • For metal installations (20 gauge), (8) #14-10 x 2" sheet metal screws (not provided) are required for models #00500 and #00510.
  • Minimum Substrate Requirements:
    • Wood: 3/4" CDX and 3" support beam, with a minimum 2" fastener embedment into the support beam.
    • Metal: 20 gauge.
  • Compatible Roof Pitch: Flat to vertical. The anchor must NEVER be installed past vertical (e.g., on the underside of a beam).
  • Personal Fall Arrest Applications:
    • Supports a MAXIMUM of 1 PFAS per connection point.
    • Structure must withstand loads of at least 5,000 lbs in the permitted directions.
    • Maximum free fall is 6', or up to 12' if used with explicitly certified equipment.
    • Applicable D-ring: Dorsal.
  • Restraint Applications:
    • Prevents workers from reaching a fall hazard.
    • Structure must withstand loads of at least 1,000 lbs in the permitted directions.
    • No free fall is permitted.
    • May only be used on surfaces with slopes up to 4/12 (vertical/horizontal).
    • Applicable D-rings: Dorsal, Chest, Side, Shoulder.
  • Fall Clearance: Requires sufficient clearance below the anchorage connector to arrest a fall. Calculation must account for a MINIMUM 3' safety factor, deceleration distance, user height, lanyard/SRL length, and other applicable factors.
  • Compatibility: All connections must be selected and deemed compatible by a Competent Person. Connector gates must be self-closing and self-locking, and withstand minimum loads of 3,600 lbs. Roll-out (unintentional opening of the hook gate) must be eliminated.
  • Anchorage Positioning: A chart is provided to detail allowable working zones (distance from leading edge, working distance along roof edge, and working angle from perpendicular) to reduce the risk of swing falls and improper side loading.

Usage Features:

  • Permanent Installation: Ridge-It Anchors are designed for permanent installation ONLY and must NEVER be reinstalled.
  • Installation Planning: Before installation, a Competent Person must ensure all PFAS equipment is compatible, select an installation location that meets minimum load requirements, and consider eliminating or minimizing swing fall hazards.
  • Butyl Strips: The integrated butyl strips provide weather resistance and waterproofing, allowing direct installation on the roof surface without removing ridge cap/roof shingling. For retrofit applications, existing ridge cap/roof shingling must be removed at the installation location.
  • Model-Specific Installation:
    • #00500 & #00510: Installed perpendicular to the roof peak and parallel with the truss or support beam. The label must face up, and butyl strips must lie flush. For #00510, the anchor is slightly bent at its center to fit snugly over the roof peak. After installation, roof shingling must be fully reinstalled to cover the anchor body, leaving the D-ring(s) uncovered.
    • #00515 (Tile Anchor): Installed perpendicular to the roof peak and parallel with the truss or support beam. The D-ring is positioned on the opposite side of the roof from the fastener installation locations. The label must face up. Existing ridge cap/roof tiling must be removed for retrofit applications. The anchor is slightly bent at its center to fit snugly over the roof peak. After installation, ridge cap/roof tiling must be fully reinstalled to cover the anchor body, leaving the D-ring uncovered.
  • Swing Fall Prevention: Users must make considerations to eliminate or minimize swing fall hazards by working as close to in line with the anchor point as possible.
  • Prohibited Uses:
    • NEVER use Ridge-It Anchors in horizontal lifeline applications.
    • NEVER load the anchor improperly (refer to the anchorage positioning chart).
    • NEVER use fall protection equipment to hang, lift, support, or hoist tools or equipment unless explicitly certified for such use.
    • NEVER connect two or more snap hooks or carabiners to each other.
    • NEVER connect two connectors to the same D-ring.
    • NEVER connect a connector directly to webbing or to a horizontal lifeline.
    • Avoid applications that place load on the gate of a connector.
  • Worker Health: Age, fitness, and health conditions can affect a worker's ability to withstand fall forces. Pregnant women and minors must not use this equipment. Trauma relief straps are recommended to reduce the effects of suspension trauma.

Maintenance Features:

  • Inspection:
    • Pre-Use: User must inspect the Ridge-It Anchor for deficiencies (corrosion, deformation, pits, burrs, cracks, rust, paint buildup, excessive heating, alteration, broken stitching, fraying, missing/illegible labels) prior to EACH use.
    • Formal Inspection: A Competent Person (other than the user) must formally inspect the Ridge-It Anchor at least every 6 months. These inspections must be recorded in the instruction manual's inspection log and on the equipment inspection grid label.
    • Work Area Inspection: The work area must be free of damage, debris, rot, rust, decay, cracking, and hazardous materials, and must be stable and support the minimum loads.
  • Removal from Service: If the Ridge-It Anchor fails inspection, shows defects or damage, or has been subjected to fall arrest forces, it must be IMMEDIATELY removed from service.
  • Cleaning: After each use, remove all dirt, corrosives, and contaminants. Clean with plain water, or mild soap and water if necessary, then rinse and wipe dry. NEVER use corrosive substances.
  • Storage: Store equipment where it will not be affected by heat, light, excessive moisture, chemicals, or other degrading elements.
  • Product Lifetime: The product lifetime is 5 years from the Date of First Use (or Date of Manufacture if not recorded), provided it passes pre-use and Competent Person inspections.
  • Documentation: This instruction manual must be made visible and available to all users at all times. Separate inspection logs must be used for each Ridge-It Anchor.
