Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the Guardian Fall Protection Chain Positioning Lanyard, detailing its function, specifications, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Guardian Fall Protection Chain Positioning Lanyard is designed for Work Positioning applications only. It allows a worker to be supported in suspension, enabling them to work freely with both hands. It is crucial to understand that this device is NEVER to be used for Fall Arrest or any other fall protection applications. Guardian Fall Protection strongly recommends the use of a back-up fall protection system, suitable for Fall Arrest applications, in conjunction with Chain Positioning Lanyards. The device is not to be used for rigging equipment or as material hoists.

Important Technical Specifications

The Chain Positioning Lanyard is available in several part numbers with varying lengths and materials:

  • Part # 01608 (26"): Swivel Rebar Hook & Snap Hooks (Grade 80 Chain). Material: Grade 80, galvanized steel chain.
  • Part # 01610 (24"): Web Assembly w/Rebar Hook & Snap Hooks. Material: polyester and nylon.
  • Part # 01616 (24"): Swivel Rebar Hook & Clevis Pin Snap Hooks. Material: Galvanized Steel.
  • Part # 01617 (24"): Rebar Hook & Clevis Pin Snap Hooks. Material: Galvanized Steel.

All models are designed for a worker capacity range (including all clothing, tools, and equipment) of ANSI 130-310 lbs. and OSHA 100-420 lbs. The maximum allowable free fall for these lanyards is 2 feet. The structure to which the lanyard is attached must withstand loads of at least 3,000 lbs. in the directions permitted by the system.

The device meets or exceeds applicable OSHA 1926 Subpart M, OSHA 1910, ANSI Z359.3-2017, and ANSI A10.32-2012 standards for fall protection when used according to instruction specifications.

Usage Features

Compatibility and Connections:

  • The Rebar hook at the center of the Chain Positioning Lanyard must ONLY be connected to structural rebar or other compatible structural anchor points.
  • The snap hooks must ONLY be connected to applicable harness D-rings (side D-rings or shoulder D-rings).
  • All connector gates must be self-closing and self-locking, and withstand minimum loads of 3,600 lbs.
  • It is critical to eliminate all possibility of "roll-out," which occurs when interference between a hook and the attachment point causes the hook gate to unintentionally open and release.
  • Incompatible connections include: two connectors to the same D-ring, incompatible or irregular applications increasing roll-out risk, two or more snap hooks/carabiners connected to each other, connector to integral lanyard, connector directly to webbing, or connector directly to a horizontal lifeline.
  • Quick Link Carabiners are specifically for adjusting the length of the chain links on the Rebar Positioning Device. Both chain legs must always be adjusted to the same length. NEVER make any other connections to Quick Link Carabiners.
  • Maximum of 1 connection per D-ring.

Fall Clearance and Swing Falls:

  • Sufficient clearance below the anchorage connector is essential to arrest a fall before the user strikes the ground or an obstruction.
  • When calculating fall clearance, a MINIMUM 2' safety factor must be accounted for, in addition to deceleration distance, user height, and lanyard/SRL length.
  • Considerations must be made to eliminate or minimize swing fall hazards. Swing falls occur when the anchor is not directly above the location of a fall, significantly increasing the likelihood of serious injury or death. Always work as close to in line with the anchor point as possible. If swing fall exists, additional fall clearance must be accounted for.

General Safety:

  • A pre-planned rescue procedure is required in case of a fall.
  • Training for Authorized Persons on correct erection, disassembly, inspection, maintenance, storage, and use of equipment must be provided by a Competent Person.
  • NEVER use fall protection equipment to hang, lift, support, or hoist tools or equipment unless explicitly certified for such use.
  • Equipment subjected to fall arrest forces must be immediately removed from use.
  • Sustained post-fall suspension can lead to serious injury or death; use trauma relief straps to mitigate suspension trauma.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning:

  • After each use, remove all dirt, corrosives, and contaminants.
  • If a Rebar Positioning Device cannot be cleaned with plain water, use mild soap and water, then rinse and wipe dry.
  • NEVER clean with corrosive substances.

Storage:

  • Store equipment where it will not be affected by heat, light, excessive moisture, chemicals, or other degrading elements.

Inspection:

  • Prior to EACH use: Inspect the Chain Positioning Lanyard for deficiencies such as corrosion, deformation, pits, burrs, rough surfaces, sharp edges, cracking, rust, paint buildup, excessive heating, alteration, broken stitching, fraying, and missing or illegible labels.
  • Immediately remove the device from service if any defects or damage are found, or if it has been exposed to fall arrest forces.
  • Inspect the bolt and nut at the base of the hook; remove from service if there is a visible gap between the nut and hook.
  • At least every 12 months: A Competent Person (other than the user) must conduct a formal inspection. This inspection must be recorded in the inspection log within the instruction manual and on the equipment inspection grid label. The Competent Person must sign their initials for the month and year of the inspection.
  • The product lifetime is indefinite, provided it passes all pre-use and Competent Person inspections.
  • All inspection records must be visible and available to all users at all times.
  • If equipment fails inspection, immediately remove it from service and contact Guardian for return or repair.
