Overview

The Hager 4700 Series Rim Exit Device is a robust and versatile hardware solution designed for secure and compliant egress in various door configurations. This device is available in several models, including the 4700R Rim Exit Device and the 4700RF Fire-Rated Rim Exit Device, catering to both standard and fire-rated applications.

Function Description

The primary function of the 4700 Series Rim Exit Device is to provide reliable and easy egress from a building or room, particularly during emergencies. It is designed to be pushed to open, allowing occupants to exit quickly without needing to operate a traditional doorknob or lever. The device can be installed on single doors, double doors, and double doors with a mullion, offering flexibility for various architectural layouts.

For single door applications, the device is mounted on the push side of the door. In double door configurations, two devices are installed, one on each door. When a mullion is present, the devices are mounted on the doors, and the mullion provides the strike surface. The device incorporates a strike plate that engages with the latch bolt, securing the door when closed.

A key feature is the "dogging" mechanism, which allows the latch bolt to be retracted and held open, enabling free passage without the need to operate the push bar. This is particularly useful during high-traffic periods or when the door needs to remain unlocked for extended durations. The dogging mechanism is operated by depressing the push bar and turning a hex wrench 90 degrees clockwise. To release the dogging, the push bar is held, and the hex wrench is turned counterclockwise 90 degrees, allowing the latch to return to its up position and lock the door. It's important to note that the dogging device is not available on fire-rated models to maintain fire safety compliance.

The device also offers different door width ranges for exit devices, accommodating 30", 36", and 48" door widths. The recommended overall exit device length is equal to the door width minus 4". For wider doors, the device can be cut to size using a hacksaw or metal cutting saw blade.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Door Width Compatibility:
    • 30" device: 30" - 35" door width
    • 36" device: 36" - 47" door width
    • 48" device: 48" - 60" door width
  • Recommended Overall Exit Device Length: Door width - 4".
  • Mounting Height: The centerline of the exit device should be 39" from the finished floor.
  • Strike Mounting Hole Dimensions:
    • For metal doors, drill and tap 1/4"-20 machine screws.
    • For wood doors, pre-drill 1/8" holes for #12 wood screws.
    • If mounting trim, drill 5/16" clearance holes on the exit device side (push side) of the door and 1/2" holes on the pull side.
    • If using sex bolts, drill 5/16" clearance holes on the exit device side (push side) of the door and 3/8" on the pull side.
  • Strike Plate Dimensions:
    • Metal stop: 1/4"-20 machine screws (3)
    • Wood stop: #12 wood screws (3)
  • Fasteners:
    • For wood, drill 1/8" holes for #12 wood screws.
    • For metal, drill and tap 1/4"-20 holes.
    • Sex bolts are recommended for through-bolting applications, especially for wood doors, to ensure a secure installation and prevent pull-out.
  • Surface Vertical Rod Device (for double doors with mullion): Requires a 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset.
  • Minimum Stile Width: 4-1/2" (114 mm) for the exit device.
  • Minimum Door Thickness: 1-3/4" (44 mm).

Usage Features

The 4700 Series Rim Exit Device is designed for ease of use and installation.

  • Versatile Installation: It can be installed on single doors, double doors, and double doors with a mullion, making it suitable for a wide range of applications in commercial, institutional, and industrial settings.
  • Outside/Inside Door Operation: The device is designed to be pushed from the inside to exit. From the outside, access is typically controlled by an external trim or a key.
  • Dogging Feature: The dogging mechanism allows the door to remain unlocked and open for free passage, which is convenient during peak hours or for temporary access control. This feature is not available on fire-rated models.
  • Adjustable Strike: The strike plate is adjustable, allowing for precise alignment with the latch bolt, ensuring smooth operation and secure latching. This is crucial for proper functioning and preventing door rattling.
  • Customizable Length: The exit device can be cut to fit specific door widths, providing flexibility and reducing the need for multiple stock keeping units.
  • Clearance for Trim Actuator: The device provides a 3/4" (19 mm) clearance hole for the trim actuator shaft, ensuring compatibility with various external trims.

Maintenance Features

Maintenance of the Hager 4700 Series Rim Exit Device is straightforward, focusing on proper installation and periodic checks to ensure continued reliable operation.

  • Installation Instructions: Detailed instructions are provided for installation, including marking the door, drilling holes, and adjusting the strike. Correct installation is crucial for the device's longevity and performance.
  • Adjustable Components: The adjustable strike allows for fine-tuning after installation, compensating for minor door or frame shifts over time. This helps maintain smooth operation and prevents wear on the latch bolt.
  • Robust Construction: The device is built with durable materials to withstand frequent use and resist wear and tear, minimizing the need for frequent repairs.
  • End Cap Bracket: The end cap bracket is removable, allowing access to the internal components for maintenance or adjustments. It is secured with screws, making it easy to remove and reattach.
  • Chassis Cover: The chassis cover protects the internal mechanisms from dust and debris, contributing to the device's durability and reducing the need for internal cleaning.
  • Regular Checks: Periodically check the alignment of the strike and latch bolt, the tightness of all fasteners, and the smooth operation of the push bar. Lubrication of moving parts may be required in high-use environments.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides clear steps for adjusting the strike if the latch and deadlatch are not aligning properly, ensuring the device continues to function effectively.

In summary, the Hager 4700 Series Rim Exit Device is a reliable, adaptable, and user-friendly solution for emergency egress, offering a blend of security, convenience, and ease of maintenance for a wide range of door applications.
