Overview

The Hager 5200 Series Door Closer is a robust and versatile device designed to provide controlled closing for a wide range of doors, ensuring safety, security, and convenience. This Grade 1 door closer meets ANSI A156.4 standards, indicating its high quality and suitability for heavy-duty commercial and institutional applications. Its non-handed design simplifies installation and inventory management, as the same unit can be used for both left-hand and right-hand doors, as well as for regular arm, parallel arm, and top jamb installations.

Function Description

The primary function of the Hager 5200 Series Door Closer is to control the opening and closing cycle of a door. It prevents doors from slamming shut, which can cause damage to the door, frame, and hardware, as well as potential injury to occupants. Conversely, it ensures that doors close completely and securely, contributing to building security and energy efficiency by maintaining climate control. The closer achieves this through a hydraulic mechanism that regulates the speed and force of the door's movement.

Key functional adjustments include:

  • Sweep Speed: This adjustment controls the door's closing speed from its maximum open position down to approximately 10-15 degrees from the closed position. It allows users to set a comfortable and safe closing pace, preventing rapid closures that could be hazardous or disruptive.
  • Latch Speed: This adjustment fine-tunes the door's closing speed for the final few degrees of travel, ensuring that the door latches securely without slamming. A properly adjusted latch speed is crucial for the door to engage with the strike plate and close completely, which is vital for security and fire safety.
  • Backcheck: This feature provides hydraulic resistance when the door is opened beyond a certain point (typically 70-85 degrees). Backcheck prevents the door from being violently thrown open, protecting the door, frame, and adjacent walls from damage, especially in high-traffic areas or windy conditions.
  • Optional Delay Action: For specific applications, an optional delay action feature can be incorporated. This allows the door to remain open for a set period before beginning its closing cycle, providing extended passage time, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with disabilities, those carrying objects, or in high-traffic areas.
  • Spring Power Adjustment: The closer's spring power can be adjusted to match the specific requirements of the door, such as its weight, size, and the amount of force needed to open and close it. This ensures that the door closer provides adequate closing force while remaining easy enough to open for all users. The closer is shipped set to size 3 but can be adjusted to various sizes (1-5) to accommodate different door widths and environmental conditions.

Usage Features

The Hager 5000 Series Door Closer is designed for ease of use and adaptability across various installation types:

  • Regular Arm Installation: In this configuration, the closer body is mounted on the pull side of the door, and the arm extends from the closer to a shoe mounted on the frame. This is a common and straightforward installation, suitable for many standard door applications.
  • Parallel Arm Installation: For parallel arm installations, the closer body is mounted on the push side of the door, and the arm assembly is mounted parallel to the door frame. This configuration is often preferred for aesthetic reasons or when the arm needs to be less obtrusive, as it projects less from the door.
  • Top Jamb Installation: In a top jamb installation, the closer body is mounted on the push side of the frame header, and the arm extends to a shoe mounted on the door. This setup is frequently used when there is insufficient space on the door for a regular arm installation or for specific architectural requirements.
  • Optional Hold-Open Arm: The closer can be equipped with an optional hold-open arm, which allows the door to be held open at a desired position. This feature is useful for temporary access, loading/unloading, or when continuous passage is required. The hold-open function is engaged by loosening a nut, opening the door to the desired position, and then tightening the nut securely.
  • Non-Handed Design: The non-handed nature of the closer means that a single unit can be used for both left-hand and right-hand doors, simplifying ordering, stocking, and installation. This flexibility reduces complexity and potential errors during deployment.
  • Standard Dimensions: The closer is designed to fit standard doors and frames with 1/8" clearance, 5/8" stops, and square edge doors, ensuring compatibility with common construction practices.
  • Reinforcement Requirement: For optimal performance and longevity, the door and frame must be properly reinforced, especially for heavy-duty applications, to withstand the forces exerted by the closer.
  • Exterior Door Restriction: It is important to note that these door closers should NOT be installed on the exposed side (weather side) of exterior doors, as exposure to harsh weather conditions can compromise their performance and lifespan.

Maintenance Features

The Hager 5200 Series Door Closer is designed for durability and ease of maintenance, with several features contributing to its long-term reliability:

  • Durable Construction: The use of high-quality materials and robust construction ensures the closer's longevity and resistance to wear and tear in demanding environments.
  • Adjustable Valves: The sweep speed, latch speed, backcheck, and delay action (if applicable) are controlled by adjustable hydraulic valves. These valves allow for fine-tuning of the door's closing characteristics over time, compensating for changes in door weight, environmental factors, or user preferences. It is crucial not to fully unscrew these valves, as this can lead to hydraulic fluid leakage and render the closer non-functional.
  • Spring Power Adjustment: The spring power can be easily adjusted using a hex wrench, allowing for recalibration if the door's characteristics change (e.g., due to added weight or new hardware) or if the closing force needs to be modified for different user groups.
  • Cover for Protection: A protective cover encloses the closer body, shielding the internal mechanisms from dust, debris, and tampering. This cover also contributes to the aesthetic integration of the closer with the door and frame.
  • Clear Installation Instructions: Comprehensive installation instructions, including detailed diagrams and step-by-step guidance, facilitate correct setup and adjustment, minimizing the risk of improper installation that could lead to premature wear or malfunction.
  • Troubleshooting Guidance: The manual implicitly provides guidance for troubleshooting by clearly explaining the function of each adjustment. If a door is closing too fast or too slow, or not latching properly, the user can refer to the respective adjustment sections to correct the issue.

In summary, the Hager 5200 Series Door Closer is a highly adaptable, reliable, and user-friendly device that provides essential door control for a wide array of commercial and institutional settings. Its comprehensive adjustment capabilities, robust design, and ease of installation make it a preferred choice for ensuring safe, secure, and efficient door operation.
