DIMENSIONING OF CABLES
The electrical installation and dimensioning of cables must comply with local regulations.
Dimensioning of panel type cables
The current a solar panel produces varies in relation to the size of the solar panel, the way it is
connected, and the angle of the sunlight. The minimum cross-sectional area of the conductors can
be calculated on the basis of the solar panel’s short-circuit current (Isc). Isc is specied in the technical
data for the solar panel. For connection in series the short-circuit current for the whole solar panel
group is the same as the short-circuit current for the individual solar panel. For connection in parallel
the short-circuit current for the whole solar panel group is the same as the sum of the short-circuit
current for the individual solar panels. The short-circuit current of the solar panel group must not
exceed the highest stipulated input current of the charge controller. See the table below.
NOTE:
All the solar panels in a given group are assumed to be identical.
Max input current Max cross-sectional conductor area*
20 A 6 mm²/10AWG
* Max cross-section conductor area that passes the connection terminals in the charge controller.
IMPORTANT:
For connection in series of solar panels the open-circuit voltage of the solar panel group must not
exceed 46 V (Tracer **06 AN) and 92 V (Tracer **10 AN) at an ambient temperature of 25°C.
Dimensioning of battery and consumer cables
The cross-sectional conductor area for battery and consumer cables should be adapted to the rated
current according to the table below.
