Overview

The HAULMASTER Steel Motorcycle Carrier is a hitch-mounted device designed for transporting motorcycles. It attaches to a vehicle's 2-inch square receiver hitch, provided the hitch is rated to Class III or Class IV and can support the combined weight of the carrier and the motorcycle.

Function Description:

The primary function of the HAULMASTER Steel Motorcycle Carrier is to provide a secure and convenient method for transporting a motorcycle using a vehicle equipped with a suitable receiver hitch. It features a main carrier frame, a wheel chock system, and a ramp for loading and unloading the motorcycle. The carrier is designed to hold the motorcycle in a stable position during transit, reducing the need for a separate trailer.

Usage Features:

  • Hitch Attachment: The carrier is mounted to the vehicle's receiver hitch using a hitch tube, hitch pin, and R-clip. A stabilizer plate assembly with a U-bolt, nuts, spring washers, and flat washers is used to secure the carrier and minimize movement. It's crucial to ensure the vehicle's ignition is off and the parking brake is set before installing or removing the carrier. The nuts on the U-bolt should be tightened to a maximum of 20 ft. lbs. of torque.
  • Motorcycle Loading: Loading the motorcycle requires two people for safety. First, the R-clips, wing nuts, plate washers, and nylon washers are removed from both sides of the ramp to unlock it. The ramp is then detached from its mounted position and its end rung is placed onto the carrier frame, creating an incline. The wheel chock dropleaf is opened. With the motorcycle in neutral, two people push the motorcycle up the ramp and onto the carrier frame until the front wheel rests securely between the wheel chock front frame and the wheel chock dropleaf. It is explicitly stated not to drive the motorcycle onto the carrier frame.
  • Motorcycle Securing: Once the motorcycle is in position, it must be secured using straps (not included) to the holes on the hook tubes. This ensures the motorcycle remains stable and prevents movement during transport.
  • Ramp Securing: After loading, the ramp is returned to its mounted position and secured using the R-clip, wing nut, plate washer, and nylon washer. This locks the ramp in place, preventing it from detaching during travel.
  • Motorcycle Unloading: Unloading also requires two people. The ramp is first unlocked by removing the R-clips, wing nuts, plate washers, and nylon washers. The ramp is then removed from its secured position and its hooks are inserted into the ramp hook holes at the edge of the carrier frame, creating a ramp for descent. One person supports the motorcycle to prevent movement while the other releases tension on all tie-downs. The wheel chock dropleaf is opened. With the motorcycle in neutral gear, it is slowly pushed down the ramp and off the carrier frame with assistance. After unloading, the ramp is returned to its mounted position and secured.
  • Speed Limit: It is important not to exceed 55 mph while the carrier is attached to the vehicle.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are warned not to sit on the motorcycle while loading, unloading, or while it is supported on the carrier. All DOT regulations pertaining to mounting the carrier onto a vehicle must be obeyed. Bystanders should be kept out of the area during assembly, loading, and unloading.
  • Lighting and License Plate: A light kit (such as Kenway 64275, sold separately) must be installed if the cargo blocks the vehicle's license plate and/or tail lights. Users should review state and local laws regarding tail lights and license plates for required location and lighting.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, a thorough inspection of the carrier's general condition is required. This includes checking for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, and any other condition that might affect its safe operation.
  • Post-Use Cleaning: After each use, the external surfaces of the carrier should be wiped with a clean cloth.
  • General Maintenance: The manual emphasizes the importance of maintaining the carrier. If any damage or condition that affects operation is found, the product should be repaired before further use. Poorly maintained products can lead to accidents.
  • Label and Nameplate Maintenance: Labels and nameplates on the tool carry important safety information and should be maintained. If they become unreadable or go missing, a replacement should be obtained from Harbor Freight Tools.
  • Professional Repair: Procedures not specifically explained in the manual should only be performed by a qualified technician. The manufacturer and/or distributor explicitly state that all repairs and parts replacements should be undertaken by certified and licensed technicians, not by the buyer. The buyer assumes all risk and liability for repairs or replacement parts.
  • Damaged Equipment: Users are warned not to use damaged equipment to prevent serious injury from product failure.
