Precaution!
The Powder Coating paint process has become the
most common widely used application in the outdoor
furniture category. Unfortunately powder coating is
extremely sensitive to Humidity and Moisture. A
simple process to protect your furniture, especially
flat surfaces is to apply a simple coat of good quality
car wax prior to using. If this process is done every
few months it will protect your furniture for years
to come.

Why is the Hiland Patio Heater burner flame is low?
    • K
      Kathryn GonzalesSep 16, 2025
A low burner flame on your Hiland Patio Heater can be due to several reasons. Low gas pressure is a common cause; turn the cylinder valve OFF and replace the cylinder. If the outdoor temperature is below 40ºF and the tank is less than 1/4 full, use a full cylinder. Also, inspect the burner and orifices for any blockages.

Usage Features

The patio heater is designed for ease of use with several features:

  • Pilot Light System: Equipped with a pilot light for safer startups and shutdowns. The pilot must be lit before the main burner can be started.
  • Adjustable Heat Output: Features a control knob that allows users to adjust the heat from "LOW" to "HIGH" positions.
  • Ignition System: Includes an igniter button for lighting the pilot flame. Manual lighting with a long stem lighter is also an option if the igniter fails.
  • Viewing Hole: A sliding cover allows access to a viewing hole to observe the pilot flame during ignition.
  • Mobility: The main frame includes wheels and wheel axes for easy movement of the heater.
  • Tabletop: A tabletop is integrated into the design, providing a convenient surface.
  • Reflector Assembly: Consists of multiple reflector panels and a reflector plate to direct heat effectively.

Safety Precautions during Usage:

  • Outdoor Use Only: Strictly for outdoor use; never use inside a building, garage, camper, tent, car, or home.
  • Ventilation: Requires a well-ventilated space. An appliance may be installed with shelter no more inclusive than:
    • Walls on all sides, but with no overhead cover.
    • A partial enclosure with an overhead cover and no more than two side walls (parallel or at right angles).
    • A partial enclosure with an overhead cover and three side walls, as long as 30% or more of the horizontal periphery is permanently open.
  • Gas Leak Check: A mandatory leak check using soapy water solution must be performed whenever gas connections are loosened or removed, or before initial use. Never use a flame for leak testing.
  • Flammable Materials: Keep the heater area clear and free from combustible materials, gasoline, paint thinner, cleaning solvents, and other flammable vapors and liquids.
  • High Surface Temperatures: Alert children and adults to the hazards of high surface temperatures. Stay away from these surfaces to avoid burns or igniting clothing.
  • Cylinder Handling: Never store a spare LP-gas cylinder under or near the appliance. Never fill the cylinder beyond 80% full. Store disconnected cylinders outdoors in a well-ventilated area, out of reach of children, with dust caps tightly installed.
  • Relighting: If relighting a hot heater, always wait at least 5 minutes for gas to dissipate.
  • Abnormal Flame/Smoke: If excessive yellow flame or thick black smoke is detected, turn off the heater and consult the troubleshooting guide.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the heater's safe and efficient operation.

  • Annual Inspection: The heater should be inspected before use and annually by a qualified service person.
  • Cleaning:
    • Exterior Surfaces: Keep clean with warm soapy water. Avoid flammable or corrosive cleaning agents.
    • Burner and Pilot Assembly: Keep dry. Do not submerge the control valve assembly in water.
    • Air Flow: Ensure unobstructed air flow. Keep controls, burner, and circulating air passageways clean.
    • Burner Holes: Clean burner holes using a heavy-duty pipe cleaner or compressed air to remove spiders, insects, or other blockages.
    • Dome and Burner Screen: Clean with warm soapy water if carbon deposits develop.
  • Hose Assembly Inspection: Visually check portions of the hose assembly within the heater post and inspect the entire hose assembly at least annually for abrasion, cuts, or wear. Leak test suspected areas.
  • Corrosion Check: In salt-air environments, check for corroded areas frequently and repair promptly.
  • Protective Cover: If desired, cover the heater to protect exterior surfaces and prevent build-up in air passages. Wait until the heater is cool before covering.
  • Storage:
    • Between uses: Turn control knob OFF, disconnect LP source, store upright in an area sheltered from inclement weather.
    • Extended inactivity/transport: Turn control knob OFF, disconnect LP source, move to a secure, well-ventilated outdoor location. Never leave LP cylinder exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat.
  • Service: Only a qualified service person should repair gas passages and associated components. Always allow the heater to cool before attempting service.
  • Powder Coating Care: To protect the powder coating, apply a simple coat of good quality car wax every few months, especially on flat surfaces.
