The Powder Coating paint process has become the most
common widely used application in the outdoor furniture
category. Unfortunately powder coating is extremely
sensitive to Humidity and Moisture. A simple process to
protect your furniture, especially flat surfaces is to apply a
simple coat of good quality car wax prior to using. If this
process is done every few months it will protect your
furniture for years to come.

Overview

This document is an owner's manual for a Hiland Premium Series Flame Patio Heater, specifically models #HLDS01-GTHG and HLDS01-GTSS.

Function Description:

The Hiland Flame Patio Heater is a gas-fired outdoor infrared patio heater designed to provide warmth in outdoor spaces. It operates using propane gas and features a visible flame within a glass tube, offering both heat and aesthetic appeal. The heater is intended for outdoor use only and is not to be used in enclosed spaces due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Propane gas (standard 20 lb. LP-gas cylinder, not included).
  • Gas Supply Pressure: Minimum 0.4 P.S.I. for input adjustment; minimum 10 W.C. for input adjustment.
  • Input Rating: Minimum 17,000 BTUs per hour.
  • Clearances from Combustible Materials: Minimum three (3) feet from the sides and two (2) feet from the top.
  • Operating Temperature: Reduced efficiency below 40°F (5°C).
  • Wind Velocity: Should be below 10 mph for operation.
  • Assembly Time: Approximately 60 minutes.
  • Battery: Requires one AA (1.5 V) battery for the igniter.
  • Compliance: ANS Z83.26-2014 and CSA 2.37-2014 Gas-Fired Outdoor Infrared Patio Heaters.

Usage Features:

  • Outdoor Use Only: Strictly designed for outdoor environments; never use indoors or in unventilated areas like campers, tents, cars, or homes.
  • Pilot Light System: Equipped with a pilot light for safer startups and shutdowns. The pilot must be lit before the main burner can be started.
  • Variable Control Knob: Allows adjustment of heat output from "LOW" to "HIGH."
  • Ignition: Features an igniter button for easy startup. Manual ignition with a long stem lighter is also possible if the igniter fails.
  • Propane Cylinder Storage: LP-gas cylinders not connected for use must be stored outdoors in a well-ventilated area, out of reach of children, and with dust caps tightly installed. Never store a spare cylinder under or near the appliance.
  • Flame Monitoring: The manual provides visual guidance for normal flame conditions (blue flame with straight yellow tops, flame height 2/3 of glass tube under "Hi" position, 1/3 under "Low" position) versus abnormal conditions (excessive yellow flame, noisy burner, black smoke).
  • Safety Warnings: Numerous warnings are provided regarding fire hazards, explosion risks, burn hazards, asphyxiation, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Users are advised to read and understand all safety information before operation.
  • Leak Check Procedure: A detailed procedure using soapy water is outlined to check for gas leaks at connections before each use and whenever gas connections are loosened or removed.
  • Shutdown Procedure: Involves turning the control knob to "PILOT," then to "OFF," and finally turning off the cylinder valve and disconnecting the regulator when not in use.
  • Operation Checklist: A comprehensive checklist is provided for users to ensure safe and proper operation before and after each use, covering aspects like assembly, connections, clearances, and environmental conditions.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: Exterior surfaces should be cleaned with warm soapy water. Flammable or corrosive cleaning agents should not be used.
  • Burner and Pilot Assembly Care: Keep the area around the burner and pilot assembly dry. Do not submerge the control valve assembly in water; if submerged, it must be replaced.
  • Airflow Maintenance: Ensure the appliance area is clear of combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors. Do not obstruct combustion and ventilation airflow. Keep ventilation opening(s) of the cylinder enclosure free from debris.
  • Burner and Orifice Cleaning: Spiders and insects can nest in burner or orifices, creating a dangerous condition. Burner holes should be cleaned with a heavy-duty pipe cleaner, and compressed air can help clear smaller particles.
  • Glass Tube Cleaning: Carbon deposits can create a fire hazard. The reflector, reflector spacer, screen, and protective guards should be disassembled to remove and wash the glass tube.
  • Corrosion Prevention: In salt-air environments, corrosion occurs more quickly. Users are advised to frequently check for corroded areas and repair them promptly.
  • Appearance Maintenance: High-quality automobile wax can be applied to exterior surfaces (from the pole down, not on the emitter screen or domes) to maintain the heater's appearance.
  • Annual Inspection: The heater should be inspected before use and annually by a qualified service person. More frequent cleaning may be required as necessary.
  • Hose Assembly Inspection: Inspect the hose assembly for evidence of excessive abrasion, cuts, or wear. Suspected areas should be leak tested, and if the hose leaks, it must be replaced with a manufacturer-specified replacement.
  • Storage: When not in use, the heater should be stored upright in an area sheltered from direct contact with inclement weather. The LP cylinder should be disconnected and stored outdoors in a well-ventilated area. The heater can be covered to protect exterior surfaces and prevent debris build-up in air passages. Ensure the heater is cool before covering.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A detailed troubleshooting section is included to address common issues such as the pilot not lighting, pilot not staying lit, burner not lighting, low burner flame, carbon build-up, and thick black smoke, along with possible causes and corrective actions.
  • Customer Service: Contact information (toll-free number) is provided for questions, problems, missing parts, warranty service, and general customer support.
