Overview

The Welch Allyn Models 52400 and 52401 Specula Dispensers are designed to provide convenient storage and access to Universal KleenSpec® otoscope specula. These dispensers are compatible with two primary specula sizes: 2.75mm Pediatric Size (models 52432-U, 52432-CLR-1) and 4.25mm Adult Size (models 52434-U, 52434-CLR-1). The device is engineered for easy mounting and user-friendly operation, ensuring that the correct specula size is readily available for medical examinations.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Welch Allyn Specula Dispensers is to organize and dispense otoscope specula. Each dispenser features multiple columns, with each column designed to hold a specific size of specula. This organization helps healthcare professionals quickly identify and retrieve the appropriate specula for their needs, streamlining the examination process. The dispensers are designed to be wall-mounted, making them easily accessible in clinical environments while conserving counter space.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Compatible Specula Sizes:
    • 2.75mm Pediatric Size (models 52432-U, 52432-CLR-1)
    • 4.25mm Adult Size (models 52434-U, 52434-CLR-1)
  • Mounting Options: The dispenser offers two distinct mounting methods to accommodate various wall surfaces:
    • Double-sided tape: Suitable for dry, clean, firm, nonporous surfaces such as sheetrock.
    • Screws: Recommended for rough or porous surfaces like vinyl wallpaper.
  • Material: The unit features a "White Base" which is the primary component for mounting.
  • Dimensions (Mounting for screws):
    • Top screw location: 3 inches down from the desired top of the unit.
    • Lower screw location: 3 inches down from the top screw location.
    • Screw protrusion: Approximately 1/8 inch behind the screw head for mounting.
  • Identification: Pressure-sensitive labels are included to clearly identify the specula size stored in each column. These labels are affixed to the triangular boss of the tube corresponding to the stored size.
  • Revision Date: 2020-12
  • Mat. No.: 773421, 80027532 ver A

Usage Features:

The Welch Allyn Specula Dispensers are designed for straightforward use in a clinical setting.

  • Easy Specula Identification: The inclusion of pressure-sensitive labels allows users to clearly mark each column with the corresponding specula size (2.75mm or 4.25mm). This prevents confusion and ensures that the correct size is selected quickly.
  • Quick Access: Once mounted, the dispenser provides a centralized and organized location for specula, making them readily available during patient examinations.
  • Two Mounting Methods for Versatility:
    • For nonporous surfaces (e.g., sheetrock): The double-sided tape method offers a clean and quick installation. Users attach two pieces of tape to the White Base, carefully position the unit, and then firmly press it against the wall after removing the release liners. A crucial caution is provided to ensure proper placement on the first contact to avoid issues.
    • For porous surfaces (e.g., vinyl wallpaper): The screw-mounting method provides a more secure attachment. This involves marking the desired location, drilling pilot holes for two screws (one 3 inches down from the top of the unit, and another 3 inches below that), and then mounting the unit by fitting the round holes in the White Base over the screw heads. The unit is then pushed downward to secure it.
  • Relocation Capability (Tape Method): If the unit needs to be relocated when mounted with tape, it can be carefully removed by prying under the rear of the White Base. The old tape must then be removed, and new double-sided tape (e.g., 3M 4466W or equivalent, 1/16" thick) applied for re-mounting.

Maintenance Features:

The maintenance aspects of the Welch Allyn Specula Dispensers primarily revolve around ensuring proper mounting and, if necessary, re-mounting.

  • Tape Replacement for Relocation: If the dispenser needs to be moved after being installed with double-sided tape, the old tape must be completely removed, and new, equivalent double-sided tape applied. This ensures a secure re-attachment. The manual specifically recommends 1/16" thick tape such as 3M 4466W or equivalent.
  • Screw Inspection: For screw-mounted units, periodic inspection of the screws and the unit's attachment to the wall may be beneficial to ensure continued stability, especially in high-traffic areas. The manual notes that "alternate screws may be needed" depending on the mounting surface, implying that users should ensure the provided screws are appropriate for their specific wall type or source more suitable ones if necessary.
  • Cleaning: While not explicitly detailed in the provided text, as a medical device accessory, it is implied that the dispenser should be kept clean according to standard clinical hygiene protocols to prevent contamination. The nonporous nature of the White Base would likely facilitate easy surface cleaning.
  • Label Management: The provision of extra pressure-sensitive labels suggests that labels can be replaced if they become worn, damaged, or if the user decides to change the specula size stored in a particular column. This ensures clear identification remains consistent over time.
