Overview

The Honeywell MSXX10 and MSXX20 Series are spring return direct coupled actuators designed for use in heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. These actuators are capable of driving a variety of quarter-turn, final control elements that require spring return fail-safe operation, such as volume control dampers (mounted directly to the drive shaft or remotely with accessory hardware), quarter-turn rotary valves (like ball or butterfly valves), and linear stroke globe or cage valves (with linkages for linear actuation).

Function Description:

These actuators are designed to operate valves, dampers, ventilation flaps, and louvers, providing torque up to their rated capacity. In the event of a power failure, the actuator will spring return to its start position, ensuring fail-safe operation. They can be operated by proportional controllers, driving towards a fully open position as the input signal increases and towards a fully closed position as it decreases. The actuator stops when the input signal reaches the desired proportional control point. Some models are Sylk-enabled, allowing for communication within a Sylk-enabled actuator and controller network.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Torque: Available in 88 lb-in (10 Nm) for MSXX10 models and 175 lb-in (20 Nm) for MSXX20 models.
  • Power Supply: Models support 24 Vac/dc (Class 2), 100-250 Vac, with varying VA driving requirements depending on the model and torque.
  • Drive Time: Typically 90 seconds for floating/modulating models and 40 seconds (±10 seconds) for two-position models. Spring close time is less than 25 seconds.
  • Device Weight: 6 lb (2.7 kg).
  • Temperature Ratings:
    • Ambient: -40°F to 140°F (-40°C to 60°C).
    • Shipping and Storage: -40°F to 158°F (-40°C to 70°C).
  • Humidity Ratings: 5% to 95% RH noncondensing.
  • Stroke: 95° ±3°, mechanically limited.
  • End Switches (Two SPDT): Dry contact with fixed settings at 7° nominal stroke and 85° nominal stroke. Maximum load is 250 Vac, 5A resistive.
  • Mounting: Self-centering shaft adapter (shaft coupling) compatible with round damper shafts from 0.375 to 1.06 in. (10 to 27 mm) and square damper shafts from 1/2 to 3/4 in. (13 to 19 mm). The actuator can be mounted with the shaft in any position. For 175 lb-in. (20 Nm) models, a 3/4 in. or greater shaft diameter is recommended.
  • Minimum Damper Shaft Length: 1 in. (25 mm); 3 in. (76 mm) recommended.
  • Electrical Connections: Field wiring 14 to 22 AWG (2.0 to 0.344 mm sq) to screw terminals under a removable access cover.
  • Cable Specification: 300 V, 75° C, Plenum Rated, 3 ft length from end of access cover, 18 AWG (for models with whips).
  • Approvals: UL (cUL) listed, plenum-rated per UL2043.

Usage Features:

  • Control Signal Selection: Standard models include a mode selection dial for desired input signals. Enhanced models offer additional dials for adjusting input signal zero and span. Sylk-enabled MS31XX models feature Sylk address selection and Range/Direct control selector pots.
  • Spring Return Direction: Field-selectable, allowing for clockwise or counterclockwise spring return.
  • Shaft Position Indicator and Scale: Provides visual indication of the actuator's position.
  • Manual Winding Capability: Includes a locking function for manual positioning without power, useful during installation or for moving and locking the damper/valve shaft.
  • Mechanical End Limits: Built-in to prevent over-travel.
  • Adjustable Zero and Span (Enhanced Modulating Models): Allows for fine-tuning of the actuator's response to input signals, defining the 0% angle of rotation and adjusting the motor response over the selected input span.
  • Auto-Adapt Feature: For mechanically limited strokes, this feature rescales the input signal over the new limited stroke, ensuring full control across the reduced travel span.
  • Actuator Override: Allows for overriding the control signal (e.g., for freeze protection) to force the actuator to a full open or full closed position by manipulating the input signal connection.
  • Non-Standard Stroke (Mechanical Stroke Limit Reduction): The stroke can be adjusted in 5-degree increments by changing the rotational mounting of the shaft coupling, allowing the actuator to drive less than the full 95 degrees.

Maintenance Features:

  • Access Cover: Removable to facilitate connectivity and wiring to screw terminals.
  • Brushless DC Submotor: For floating/modulating models, with electronic stall protection.
  • Brush DC Submotor: For two-position models, with electronic stall protection.
  • Self-Centering Shaft Adapter: Simplifies installation and accommodates a wide range of shaft sizes.
  • Metal Housing: Durable construction for longevity.

Important Notes for Usage and Installation:

  • Always read instructions carefully to avoid product damage or hazardous conditions.
  • Verify product suitability for the application by checking ratings.
  • Installation should be performed by a trained, experienced service technician.
  • Disconnect power supply before installation to prevent electrical shock or equipment damage.
  • All wiring must comply with local electrical codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Avoid using the actuator as a shaft bearing to prevent damage; it should only supply rotational torque.
  • Do not turn the motor shaft by hand or with a wrench, as this can damage the gear train.
  • Install the motor in areas free of acid fumes and deteriorating vapors to prevent damage to metal parts.
  • Ensure the mounting assembly prevents actuator rotation and allows it to float along its vertical axis; overtightening can cause binding and reduce torque output.
  • The actuator is designed to respond to DDC Controller instantaneous contact closures; avoid short cycling the actuator, as unstable damper control can cause premature actuator failure.
