Why is there no sound on my HP Desktop?

  There might be several reasons why your HP Desktop isn't producing sound: the volume could be muted (check the Mute button on your keyboard or in the Control Panel), the volume could be turned down (use the keyboard controls to increase it), the speakers could be turned off (check if they are on), the speaker cables might not be properly connected (turn off your PC and reconnect them), the PC could be in standby mode (press the Standby button or the Esc key), you might be using a passive speaker system (replace it with an active one that has a power cord and connects to the Audio Out connector), or headphones might be plugged in (unplug them).

  If your HP Desktop won't turn on, ensure it's securely connected to a power source. Check that the monitor is connected and turned on. Also, verify the line voltage selection switch is correctly set for your region (115V/230V). Test the wall outlet with another device. If you recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the old memory modules. Reseat drive power, data, and power supply cables.

  If your HP Desktop seems locked up, it could be that a program has stopped responding. To resolve this, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Windows Task Manager. From there, you can select the program that's not responding and click 'End Task'. Alternatively, you can restart the PC by clicking 'Shut Down' and then 'Restart'. If this doesn't work, press and hold the power button for 4 or more seconds to turn off the PC, then press the power button again to turn it back on.

  If your HP Desktop screen is blank and the monitor power light is off, ensure the monitor power cable is connected to both the monitor and the wall outlet. Also, make sure the monitor is turned on by pressing the power button on the front of the monitor.

  If your HP Desktop's CD/DVD drive can't read a disc, make sure the disc is inserted correctly with the label facing up. If it's a DVD, wait at least 30 seconds for the drive to determine the media type. Clean the disc with a CD cleaning kit. If Windows doesn't detect the drive, the driver program may be corrupted. To reinstall it, go to Control Panel, then System, then Hardware, and Device Manager. Uninstall the problem drive, and restart your PC.

  If the diskette drive activity light stays on with your HP Desktop, the diskette might be improperly inserted. Remove the diskette and reinsert it with the round metal disk facing down and the arrow on top pointing into the drive. Push it in until it stops.
