• ISSUE (Internal): When attempting to print with a shared driver from a Windows
XP, Windows NT 4,0, or Windows 2000 print server with Printer Status and Alerts
installed, the XP client user is unable to print.
DESCRIPTION: When you install drivers on Windows XP, Windows NT
4.0, or Windows 2000 on the print server, and share them to XP clients,
the printer appears to install but the installed printer cannot print. Even
replacing the driver with a different one does not enable printing.
The cause of the failure is that a kernel-mode driver is being vended from
a Windows NT 4.0-type host share to a Windows XP client.
WORKAROUND 1: Update the XP client driver from a kernel-mode driver
to a user-mode driver.
WORKAROUND 2: Do not install Printer Status and Alerts on the server.
WORKAROUND 3: Close Printer Status and Alerts on the server by
following these steps:
1. Open a command-prompt window.
2. Change directories so that the current directory is the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory (For Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me operating
systems, it will typically be WINDOWS\SYSTEM; for Windows NT 4.0,
Windows XP, and Windows XP operating systems, it will be
WINNT\SYSTEM32).
3. Make sure Printer Status and Alerts is shut down, if it is not, right-click the
Printer Status and Alerts tray icon and click Exit.
4. Type the following command: hpbdrvhk -u -a
WORKAROUND 4: Uninstall Printer Status and Alerts on the server by
running the printing system uninstaller.
• ISSUE (External): Multiple copies of the same print job show up in the Printer
Status and Alerts window as separate jobs.
DESCRIPTION: Some software applications send each copy of a print job
as a separate job. Therefore, Printer Status and Alerts represent each
copy as a separate job.
WORKAROUND: Exit Printer Status and Alerts when printing from
software applications that send each copy of a print job as a separate job.
To exit Printer Status and Alerts, right-click the Printer Status and Alerts
icon in the Windows system tray. Click Exit. In the Printer Status and
Alerts Startup dialog box, click Yes, start again after reboot.
• ISSUE (External): A broken connection icon appears.
DESCRIPTION: This problem can occur on Windows NT 4.0 client
computers that are using bidirectional communication and HP Port
Resolver to a remote printer using a Windows NT 4.0 share.
